Yes (and proud of it!) Feb 16, 2022

Translation allowed me to support myself (I'm a widow) and raise my three kids on my own (they are all grown up now and left home) and keep helping them when they need it…

Imagine we really were paid in bread. I’d have to switch to French clients.

Since being widowed, I have taken in numerous housemates and pets, but now I live alone and support myself with my translation work and retirement income from my previous in-house job as a translator.

Even though I live alone, it seems I have no real financial need to work anymore. Even though I live alone, it seems I have no real financial need to work anymore. But I still do when I decide that a literary project is worthwhile because of its subject matter, or because in its original version it has won an award, and/or if it promises to be an interesting one. It also helps if the person doing the requesting comes across as someone who is interested in having me, in particular, do their project, instead of just going with anyone who might offer their services to them at a lower fee. I actually had one client who did the latter, and then came back to me, because the cheaper option, well, just didn't turn out, should I say, the way he wanted. And then, I've invested a massive amount of time, effort, and money, esp. in terms of striving to constantly improve my art, not just by doing the work of translation, but also through ongoing education in academia. As long as I still have the drive, energy, interest, and mental acuity, I will continue to do all of that. I do want to say, however, esp. given the current unstable world situation, which seems as if it's going to have quite an impact on the US economy, too, continuing to translate books as a source of ancillary income doesn't seem to be such a bad idea; although there has already been a fairly large drop in requests from European authors, starting with the economic chaos caused by the Covid issue. In 2021, all of my work came from clients in the US, which is just fine with me, since they are almost always willing to pay a lot more than clients who are across the pond.Collapse

Yes. Feb 16, 2022

Given that the other occupant of the house is 6, there would be child labour issues if it were otherwise.

Yes, here I am Feb 16, 2022

I am the only bread winner and I often joke (half and half) with my 16-year-old daughter.

Who's the bread winner in this house? You know?

(terrible daughter, terrible mom)

I really like child labour and use it as much as possible in my household. But I don't pay for it, of course

No one-person household option? Feb 16, 2022

How come people living alone by choice (not as a result of a divorce or widowhood) are not considered in this poll, but only traditional families/couples?
Guess singles fall under the 'Yes' (!) or 'Other' (!) categories, uh!
Congrats to the poll creators. Always one step... behind the times.

The previous option was “No, my partner/spouse is also a Danish freelance translator”

But she's gone to her eternal reward

A household consisting of a single person is still a household, "yes" seemed like a no-brainer to me. Maybe because I was more confused by other options... Is "family" supposed to mean parents? Children? Does it include the partner/spouse or not? How about any other people? Can freelancing be considered a full-time or a part-time job as well? Glad I had the easy choice!

Also the only bread-eater.

I didn't read beyond the first option. The careful reader will note, though, that I have preserved the redundant hyphen in deference to Proz staff.
