Definitely not Jul 27, 2013

They should definitely not support adds like this, neither should we by applying.

You don't have to react on every job alert. Jul 27, 2013

Please note that Proz does not "support" any adds. It is not against the rules to require a lot with any tight deadline: you can simply ignore any offers that are irrelevant to you personally. I know people able to undertake this volume and meet the deadline: they use CAT-tools and can focus on an urgent assignment, but it's not cheap, of course.

Even if using a CAT tool, 40,000 words in 3 days is impossible, unless 80% of the text is repetitions and 100% matches.

Or unless the text is really very basic, like marketing surveys on a general subject. I know that for a really easy text I can translate 1000 words in one hour so 40k in 3 days could be manageable. But then again, it wouldn't leave room for final proofreading. So the overall result will not be perfect.

Yet, here we are talking about a legal text... I hope people that quote for this job will write: "Are you out of your mind????" in the subject line.

there are 10 quotes, despite the tight (!!!) deadline and a (very) low LWA score...

I thought so too, but as I do not use CAT tools I wasn't sure, and did not want to comment.

I have been trying to 'teach' my clients over the last 12 years to be kind with deadlines as this makes a huge impact on the end product and I have been very successful.

Wish every translator would do the same even if they can deliver within the deadline. Something may happen, loosing a file, kids play at school, power outage or getting a cold.

It is better to surprise the client with a translation delivered ahead of time than a bad translation on a tight deadline.

My two cents.

What do you mean by 80% repetitions? Jul 27, 2013

Repetitions like what? The only repetitions that are really repetitions would be things like. Page number, the same title repeated, proper names, column titles. This is all I can think of right now.

No one can translate 40,000 properly even with CAT tools in 3 days, unless they expect the editor to retranslate it later for them. I don't believe anyone can properly translate 1,000 in an hour. Even 500 words is a lot, especially in the legal field.

Probably something like having ten separate 20-pages contracts or agreements that are 80% the same text.

That's actually the only way I think this can be done in 3 days.

I don't know what it is about these "protest" threads where something is outrageous and shouldn't be allowed... It's great that jobs are posted. Restrictions limit insight into the market. I say this with reservations.

I remember another thread, about a job post with a 0.01 EUR budget. I actually quoted my rate and won that project. And my rate is not 0.01 EUR per word... And people were going on page after page with comments about how "outrageous" the job post was...

To state the obvious then, what if this post was directed at agents or teams?

And looks like the post expressing my opinion on this more candidly has been axed without notice. As a specialised, proficient legal translator with good typing skills, I could probably physically manage the 13K on one day with a linguistically uncomplicated text (no fancy convoluted literary syntax etc.), but not sure about 40K over 3 days, and even then there'd by definition be some errors and issues therein due to the rush, for which I'd categorically not accept liability. What those guys are offering is madness. We have a clear case of Translation 'Industry' Syndrome here.

We sometimes need to put ourselves in the shoes of the agency. Any PM knows this job is impossible to finish by one translator within 3 days. The agency may allow you to find a peer to share the burden with you, although the job post didn't explicitly mention so.
