It changed... Mar 31, 2023

Marketing was never my strong point. Of course, I had to do it at the beginning but I haven’t marketed my services and sought actively new clients for a while as I’m quite happy with those I have - a good base of loyal and regular customers who offer interesting projects paid at my rates and on my conditions. What has changed over the years is potential clients coming directly to me through word of mouth (referrals from colleagues and clients), ATA, Proz, TC, my translator association and my... See more

I think it's safe to say I market myself through my price-quality ratio.

In my first year as a freelancer I sent out about 5 CVs to 5 different agencies and that's it. The following 18 years everything happened naturally, starting with 1 main client (my previous employer) and gradually adding more clients who spontaneously presented themselves.

And that's the way it still happens today: a bunch of extremely loyal customers completed by another bunch less regular ones, a

And that's the way it still happens today: a bunch of extremely loyal customers completed by another bunch less regular ones, and from time to time a new customer that in 90% of the cases turns out to be a decent agency that becomes an established client.

If I'm contacted by totally uninteresting low-cost agencies, then I have to thank the annual fee I pay for Proz for it.

So my marketing efforts are inexistant, apart from keeping a record of my translation projects in my Proz profile (handy for reference requests from existing clients and to prepare myself somewhat for what one day might be a less bright translation future).

I always got my clients through ProZ.com and mostly they contacted me.
Additionally, the last few years via my website.

Otherwise no marketing.

I haven't had to tout my services for several years now but I have no idea how this came to pass. Just luck, I suppose.

I suppose it has, although as time passes, I have less need of marketing my services. Clients come by way of word of mouth nowadays. I don't have all that many clients but they are mostly very regular.
The mere fact that I really don't mind whether or not a potential client actually places their order helps with my self-confidence, and that tends to shine through. The only people who don't place an order after asking for an estimate, are mostly just going on price, in which case we're not
