I have no set time for work as long as the job gets done. My work day depends on a lot of things: Did I sleep well the night before? Am I tired? What does my workload look like? In this business, there’s no such a thing as a typical day (fortunately). Some days, my engine is slow to start and I find myself being more productive around 3 or 4 pm, others everything is done and dusted around noon and I’ll have the afternoon free. In this business, there’s no such a thing as a typical day (fortunately). Some days, my engine is slow to start and I find myself being more productive around 3 or 4 pm, others everything is done and dusted around noon and I’ll have the afternoon free. Occasionally I’ll work until 11 or 12 pm when a translation is flowing well, but that’s all. No all-nighters! I did it once or twice, at the very beginning of my career, just to find out a few hours later how counterproductive working all night can be. I need a proper night sleep to be able to work well. With long projects, I set myself a daily translation quota and I work until my quota is met. When I happen to exceed my quota and I find myself quite ahead of schedule, I feel a childish satisfaction. I'm my own boss and occasionally I work way, way, way more hours than I did when I was an employee, but that’s my choice and I always find ways to compensate myself…Collapse

I stop for lunch and usually have a siesta afterwards. Later in the day, I usually take the dog for a walk an hour or two before dusk, and may or may not continue working after that, depending on my workload and deadlines, etc..

I usually start around 9:00 am and keep working till 7:00 pm. However, I take breaks regularly, and my actual working hours hardly ever exceed 8 hours a day.

My husband and I are both freelancers, and take turns cleaning, cooking, shopping, doing errands, etc. One of us stops working to cook, then we have lunch. If there is a lot of work, then I continue working, if not, I stop and watch some TV, read or bake a nice dessert, then continue with some extra work. I like to stop every now and then. Sometimes, in the evening, I continue with an urgent job, or I can relax and watch a movie with my family. It all depends on the work load.

I take full advantage of the fact that I'm a freelancer and thus able to do other stuff during hours that other people are at their offices, such as assisting with the children's needs, going shopping, participating in hobbies, etc., but at the same time I often have to complete a fair amount of work each day, which means that I end up working until about 11 PM (and then I get up at 7 or 8 AM again). Where others may stop working at 9 PM and watch a movie from 9 to 11 PM, I tend to watch the movie first (e.g. from 7-9 PM) and then continue with the day's work until e.g. 11 PM. I try to avoid working on weekends, although sometimes I allow work that comes in on a Friday to flow over to Saturday before noon, and I often start on Monday's work by Sunday afternoon or evening.Collapse
