Hi. I have MS Office 2007 and the autocorrect function doesn't always work. I translate using Trados, and assume that doesn't have anything to do with it.
It might work in one sentence and then suddenly not work in the next. I'm working on a huge text and it would be very helpful if the thing did what it's meant to. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I've just figured out what the problem was. It had to do with language settings.

Now that you mention it... May 10, 2009

...I have Autocorrection disabled in my computer(s), the reason being that Word is not wiser than me in terms of words, and if I write something I write it for a reason. I don't want Word to change anything in my back without telling me. If anything looks wrong to Word, it will tell me at spellchecking time and I will decide if it was an error or intentional.

Recently-introduced bug? May 10, 2009

I am always rather mistrustful of the 'auto-updates' offering supposed 'improvements' to MS apps. but since there isn't enough information given, one has no real way of knowing whether these are in fact worthwhile / important or not.

I use Office XP, and one long-standing MS Word bug that has been annoying me for a long time suddenly got 'fixed' in a recent patch — the fact that the delete key used to produce various error symptoms if used when certain dialogue boxes were open. Hooray — although still buggy and not completely fixed, it's certainly better than it was before!

However, the latest 'update' seems to have seriously messed something up with 'autocorrect' — like Tomás, I generally mistrust autocorrect, but there are some things it is very helpful with (e.g. smart quotes, etc.), so I do leave it turned on... just recently, I've noticed some odd behaviour: l/c i is converted to u/c I (a normal autocorrect feature), but even with one (or sometimes more...) other letter following (in, is, if etc.) — I looked to see if a new autocorrect list entry had been made, but no... Similarly, when I type 'which', it doubles the final letter to 'whichh'; interestingly, it only does this when I'm typing fast! I've noticed before that typing speed has a very significant effect on autocorrect and/or auto text entry. Once again, not in the autocorrect list, so not a lot I can do about it...

I have also noticed that words that have been 'interfered with' in this way display a blue underscore character if you hover the mouse over them; I don't know what this is supposed to signify, but it makes it look as if the action is in some way deliberate...

I haven't yet done the experiment to see if turning off autocorrect altogether actually does cure the problem or not, but this is certainly a most unwelcome 'improvement'!

Indeed - All automatic updates are disabled... May 10, 2009

...except for the only automatic updates that proved to work correctly without altering my whole computer or reducing its reliability: the updates of my NOD32 antivirus. All other updates (Windows updates, Office updates, Adobe updates, Macromedia updates, Java updates...) are disabled in my machine and I do them only and when I want! It's my computer(s), I decide!!!

Dictionnaries...
One of the problems is that you can set a primary dictionnary (English for example) and then a secondary (French).
What happen is that the default dictionnary will be set according to the very first piece of sentence you type in your document. To change that double click the little language icon in the bottom bar of Word and define the dictionnary yourself.

Same problem wth Word 2003 May 24, 2009

Actually I noticed the same, since always, with MS Word 2003. I use autocorrection for the sake of speed, but quite often I have to go back and retype the space or punctuation mark two or three time to get the substitution working.

This eats up most of the advantage of using Autocorrection. However there are documents where the problem hardly appears, and documents where I can just forget about Autoccorect. I could not find any logic in this behavior.
