What are good tools for help files and/or software localisation? Some free tools?

Can Trados 5.0 Freelance handle something like this?

How about DejaVu?

Free tools available Sep 18, 2002

You can give Wordfast and +Tools www.champollion.net a try and combine with RWS for localization http://www.translate.com/locales/en-US/index.html?init_page=default

These tools are free.

As far as Trados is concerned, if you upgrade to version 5.5, you will be able to buy the T-Window Collection which allows you to handle executable files or .RC files

Free, but it is really free? Sep 20, 2002

Tried ForeignDesk and found it extremely buggy. When tried to create a project, the last step was ForeignDesk spitting numerous errors at me. In some respects ForeignDesk is parasitical on Trados and won\'t work without it (e.g. on RTF/Help file projects). So it\'s not compelely free, despite the claim. To be able to process some files, it requires the presence of Trados (ver. 3 and above) in the system. But it is my experience after all.

Lots of tools are available, but they are mostly shareware Sep 20, 2002

Regarding hlp/ñhm files - there are lots of free decompilers/compilers out there. However, if you need to do something greater than a couple of pages, nothing beats RoboHelp Office or Microsoft Help Designer, and those aren\'t free.

Regarding executable files - there was a great programe from Borland (Resource Workshop), it allowed direct editing of resource files, icons, any resources in *.exe files... However, it worked with Win 3.1 applications only, I\'m not sure, whether there i

However, it worked with Win 3.1 applications only, I\'m not sure, whether there is such a tool for the newest file formats introduced with Win\'95.

Please don\'t waste your time on Trados or DejaVu - those are great tools, but they don\'t work with program files directly and support mostly DTP and Office formats. However, there may be a converter for Trados (which, of course, wouldn\'t be free).

As always, the best localization tools are the ones used for the creation of the software (provided you have source code .
