What is “Positive Child and Youth Development” (PCYD)?
“Positive Child and Youth Development” (PCYD) is a program which promotes fun, play and effective
learning for children, ages 6‐12.
What are the Aims of Positive Child and Youth Development?
Positive Child and Youth Development has both short and long term goals for its participants. In the
short term, PCYD aims at the healthy growth of the whole child. In the long term, PCYD aims beyond
childhood. It seeks to develop youth and adults who, throughout their lives, are physically active, make
healthy choices, enjoy satisfying relationships with others and contribute positively to the community.
Positive Child and Youth Development uses play activities and discussion to pursue its aims.
Why is play a key tool in achieving these aims?
For children, the playground is a classroom, laboratory and greenhouse. When children play, they are
actively learning, exploring and growing in every respect:
Intellectually, they are sharply focused: observing, remembering, experimenting, strategizing,
evaluating and decision‐making.
Physically, they are fully involved: testing and developing their strength, their skill and their range,
coordination and speed of movement.
Emotionally, they are intensely absorbed: discovering new dimensions in themselves, growing in
confidence, experiencing excitement and happiness.
Socially, they are deeply engaged with others: while sharing the joys of play they are developing the
knowledge, attitudes and skills to communicate, cooperate and form positive relationships with
others.
Finally, play provides an excellent context for children to learn how to develop and safeguard their
health and well‐being. These life lessons include messages about the importance of physical activity,
proper nutrition, adequate sleep, good hygiene, disease avoidance and so on.
