Forrásszöveg - angol All travel is now merely a means of moving a camera from place to place, all travellers are ruled by the all-powerful lens. Visitors old-fashioned enough to wish only to stand and look with their anachronistic eyes are shoved aside by the photographers, who take it for granted that while they do their ritual focusing, nothing else may move or cross their vision. Those peculiar souls without a camera must step aside for those more properly occupied, must wait while the rituals take place, and must bide their time while whole coaches stop and unleash upon the landscape the Instamatic God. And the populations of whole countries seeing themselves cannibalised, swallowed up, vacuumed into the black-ringed staring eye, wrench what they can from the cannibals. You want picture my house, my camel? You pay.
None of this would matter, perhaps, if anything worthwhile was being accomplished. If all the constant busyness and clicking produced, at its end, what had not existed before, images of beauty captured or truth told. But, sadly, this isn't so. The camera is simply graffiti made respectable.
The camera is the means by which we stamp ourselves on everything we see, under cover of recording the Wonders of the World already wonderfully
recorded by professionals and on sale at every corner bookshop and newsagent. But what use to show Aunt Maud, back home, postcards of the Tuscan landscape, since we are not in the picture to prove that we were there?
No stretch of rocks has verity unless I am within it. No monument exists
but for my wife, leaning against it. No temple is of interest without my face beside it, grinning. With my camera I appropriate everything beautiful, possess it, shrink it, domesticate it, and reproduce it on my blank sitting-room wall to prove to a selected audience of friends and family the one absolutely vital fact about these beauties: I saw them, I was there, I photographed them, and, ergo, they are.

Mindez persze mit sem számítana, ha valami említésre méltót sikerülne alkotni. A fényképezőgép csupán a graffiti szalonképes változata.
A fényképezőgép arra szolgál, hogy mindenre rásüssük saját létünk bélyegét azzal az ürüggyel, hogy a Világ Csodáit örökítjük meg; oda se neki, hogy ezt a profik már megtették előttünk, és pazar felvételeik bármelyik sarki újságosnál vagy könyvesboltban kaphatók. Ugyan, mire menne bárki is azzal, hogy képeslapokat mutogat otthon Gizi néninek Toszkána lankáiról, ha egyszer nincs rajta ő maga a képen, bizonyítandó, hogy tényleg járt ott?
Egyetlen szirt sem valóságos, amíg ott nem feszítek rajta. Egyetlen műemlék sem létezik, amíg nem dől neki az asszony. A businessman's conversation should be regulated by fewer and simpler rules than any other function of the human animal. They are:
Have something to say.
Say it.
Stop talking.
Beginning before you know what you want to say and keeping on after you have said it lands a merchant in a lawsuit or the poorhouse, and the first is a short cut to the second. I maintain a legal department here, and it costs a lot of money, but it's to keep me from going to law.
It's all right when you are calling on a girl or talking with friends after dinner to run a conversation like a Sunday-school excursion, with stops to pick flowers; but in the office your sentences should be the shortest distance possible between periods. Cut out the introduction and the peroration, and stop before you get to secondly. You've got to preach short sermons to catch sinners; and deacons won't believe they need long ones themselves. Give fools the first and women the last word. The meat's always in the middle of the sandwich. Of course, a light butter on either side of it doesn't do any harm if it's intended for a man who likes butter.
Remember, too, that it's easier to look wise than to talk wisdom. Say less than the other fellow and listen more than you talk; for when a man's listening he isn't telling on himself and he's flattering the fellow who is. Give most men a good listener and most women enough note-paper and they'll tell all they know. Money talks -- but not unless its owner has a loose tongue, and then its remarks are always offensive. Poverty talks, too, but nobody wants to hear what it has to say.

In the twentieth century we have been greatly privileged to witness two major revolutions in our physical picture of the world. The first of these upturned our conceptions of space and time, combining the two into what we now call space-time, a space-time which is found to be subtly curved in a way that gives rise to that long-familiar, omnipresent but mysterious, phenomenon of gravity. The second of these revolutions completely changed the way in which we understand the nature of matter and radiation, giving us a picture of reality in which particles behave like waves and waves like particles, where our normal physical descriptions become subject to essential uncertainties, and where individual objects can manifest themselves in several places at the same time. We have come to use the term "relativity" to encompass the first of these revolutions and "quantum theory" to encompass the second. Both have now been observationally confirmed to a precision unprecedented in scientific history.

On a Heuristic Point of View Concerning the Production and Transformation of Light
A profound formal difference exists between the theoretical concepts that physicists have formed about gases and other ponderable bodies, and Maxwell’s theory of electromagnetic processes in so-called empty space. While we consider the state of a body to be completely determined by the positions and velocities of an indeed very large yet finite number of atoms and electrons, we make use of continuous spatial functions to determine the electromagnetic state of a volume of space, so that a finite number of quantities cannot be considered as sufficient for the complete determination of the electromagnetic state of space. According to Maxwell’s theory, energy is considered to be a continuous spatial function for all purely electromagnetic phenomena, hence also for light, whereas according to the present view of physicists, the energy of a ponderable body should be represented as a sum over atoms and electrons. The energy of a ponderable body cannot be broken up into arbitrarily many, arbitrarily small parts, but according to Maxwell’s theory (or, more generally, according to any wave theory) the energy of a light ray emitted from a point source continuously spreads out over an ever-increasing volume.

Mélységes formális különbség van a fizikusok által a gázokról és más ponderábilis testekről kialakított elméleti fogalmak, illetve az úgynevezett üres térben lezajló elektromágneses folyamatok Maxwell-féle elmélete között. Míg ugyanis egy test állapotát teljesen meghatározottnak tekintjük, ha ismerjük igen nagy, mindazonáltal véges számú atomjának és elektronjának helyzetét és sebességét, addig egy térrész elektromágneses állapotának jellemzésére folytonos térfüggvényeket használunk, ennélfogva véges számú mennyiség nem tekinthető elégségesnek a tér elektromágneses állapotának teljes leírásához. A Maxwell-féle elmélet szerint a tisztán elektromágneses jelenségekben – így a fény esetében is -- az energia folytonos térfüggvénynek tekintendő, ezzel szemben egy ponderábilis test energiája a fizikusok jelenlegi álláspontja szerint atomjaira és elektronjaira való összegként írható fel. Míg a ponderábilis test energiája nem osztható tetszőleges számú, tetszőlegesen kis részre, addig Maxwell elmélete (vagy általánosabban: bármilyen hullámelmélet) szerint a pontszerű forrásból kilépő fénysugár energiája folytonosan oszlik el egy egyre növekvő térfogatban.
