fuente histórica de tipo material

español al inglés Ciencias sociales Historia
Hello,

I am translating a children's textbook and the page shows four photos and then asks the children to identify which "tipo de fuente histórica" they are.

I have determined this is also known as a historical source in English, but am still a bit cautious about the two types of source listed ("fuente histórica de gráfica" and "fuente histórica de tipo material")

The first is, I think, a pictorial source. The second, however, I am not sure about.

The items for this type of source are a clay pot, some ruins where dwellings once were and some tools, if that helps. I did find a few references to "artefactual source", but it just doesn't seem to be as common as I would expect.

Does anyone know the right term?

Thank you.

physical remains

I think Deborah is bang on about "artefacts" not covering buildings and ruins. It's also not a word children will necessarily know, though that depends on age and level.

If you look at this reference, it covers the diifferent types of historical source and clearly uses physical remains for the type you describe:

Social Research: A Deductive Approach - Google Books Resultby Milagros Z Reyes - 2004
They are in the form of physical remains such as buildings, facilities, ... The third form of historical source are so called "memorials" which were made in ...
books.google.co.uk/books?isbn=9712337731...

It was the first thing that popped into my head when I saw your question.

The reference might help with some of the other terms, too. I think Kathryn is absolutely right about not sticking slavishly to the parallel construction of the original if it warps the terminology.

historical artefacts

there is backing for this simpler term. If as you say it is simply to help children distinguish between artwork & artefacts. I wonder if the 'source' is necessary in context.

material artefacts

versus written historical source. I think "gráfica" is being used in the broad original Greek sense.

I don't know what the other two types are (oral sources? /???), but I would not stick slavishly to the parallel construction of the original (fuente histórico de tipo XXXX) if it forces you into unidiomatic expressions, especially in a textbook. It may be more advisable to have a set that looks something like:

What type of historical source is it?

material artefact
written historical source
oral historical source
yadda yadda

historical objects / objects and architecture

I think you need a more general term than "artifacts" because your items include ruins of dwellings, which are "architectural" in nature.

Example of use:

The present law on historical and ancient places, *** historical objects*** and artifacts (1961, amended in 1982) does not cover the replication and reproduction of Buddhist art.

There are only a few registered historical objects and artifacts which are prohibited for reproduction. For example, the Phra Avalokitesalaya and Phra Sean Khan found in Ayutthaya, or Ratchburana gold objects.

According to the Fine Arts Department, any reproduction of historical objects and artifacts must be to a smaller scale than the genuine article.
