English term

seeding (in context)

English to Spanish Law/Patents Law: Contract(s) US SPANISH
This is part of the Terms and Conditions for a Sweepstakes. Here's an excerpt of the section in which the term appears:

"In the event that production, technical, seeding, programming or any other reasons cause more than the stated number of prizes..."

What could "seeding" possible mean in this context? I suspect it is some rather obscure, technical meaning.

Sounds perfect As an answer, Marcelo? I think you are right!
Marcelo González Aug 9, 2021:
And thanks, George! The added context was really helpful.

To me, it's clear this is a new concept in digital marketing coming to the fore, and with it, new 'players' (in this new e-commerce reality) in the form of 'influencers,' driving clicks for all those prizes (as part of a sweepstakes giveaway). That's my understanding at least. Regards from Vietnam

@Marcelo Certainly. Here's the full segment in which the term appears:

In the event that production, technical, seeding, programming or any other reasons cause more than the stated number of prizes as set forth in these Official Rules to be available and/or claimed, Sponsor reserves the right to award only the stated number of prizes by a random drawing among all legitimate, un-awarded, eligible prize claims.

@George - context Could you post what comes next (and a bit of what precedes it as well)?

Could 'seeding' be something along the lines of what appears below?

"...an online marketing tactic ...to attract your target customers. [...] With the ever-evolving social media, customers have changed their purchasing behaviors due to the raising of influencers scattering all over the social media. Currently, seeding has shifted to influencer seeding and content seeding, with which brands partner with influencers and content creators to gain attention, spread the brand message and promote their products."

@Mónica Muchas gracias, Mónica, por tu voluntad de ayudar, pero en este caso los ganadores son seleccionados al azar.

seeding

In this context (of terms and conditions for a sweepstakes), you might consider seeding, as is --- with a note perhaps (or a functional rendering in parenthesis).

That said, of course, I'll be following along ... in the hopes someone is especially creative; indeed, a neologism here would be nice to see, even if only for the glossary and in the broader context of a translation in the field of e-commerce.

After all, as Wallerstein argues, "The translator should not defend the purity of the language of translation against neologisms, but has the obligation to invent a parallel neologism. Nor must the translator defend classic usages against the author’s new usage, since the new usage is precisely the author’s objective" (qtd in "Metaphor and Agency" 2015: 97).

I hope this helps!

Algo así como seleccionar a los equipos, de modo que los mejores no compitan entre sí al principio del campeonato.
Peer comment(s):

"Random number generators should be capable of demonstrating the following qualities:....
d. any forms of seeding (the process of initialising the random number generation process) and re-seeding used do not introduce predictability..."

https://www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk/manual/bingo-and-casin...

"Cómo funciona la simulación del azar
Un generador de números aleatorios está limitado por su propia definición. Suelen funcionar así: se toma un valor inicial (llamado semilla), se realizan con él ciertas enrevesadas operaciones matemáticas y de ahí surge el resultado. Si el generador está bien diseñado cada vez que se utilice ofrecerá un nuevo número y la secuencia será aleatoria..."
