Abuse is when someone does or says things to you that make you upset or frightened. There are different forms of abuse:
Physical abuse – being hit or slapped, being given the wrong medication on purpose being locked in, tied up or force-fed.
Sexual abuse – being touched or kissed when it is not wanted, being made to touch or kiss someone, exposure to sexually explicit material.
Emotional abuse – being threatened, not being given choices, being bullied, being deliberately left alone for a long time or being tormented.
Financial abuse – having money or personal property stolen, being tricked out of benefits, someone borrowing money and not paying it back, being bullied into letting other people use credit cards or cheques.
Neglect – not being given enough to eat or drink, being left in dirty or wet clothes, not being given your medication or someone not calling a doctor or nurse when help is needed.
Discriminatory abuse – any type of abuse where someone targets you because of who you are.
Institutional abuse – repeated instances of poor care, rigid routines to suit staff.
Self neglect – not looking after yourself of your home and this makes you very unwell or makes where you live unsafe, not wanting help and support when you need it to make you safe or better.
Criminal exploitation – when a person is forced by an abuser to carry out or be involved in crime. The abusers will control people by using threats or serious violence.

Please come at your given appointment time. Call us if you need to reschedule your appointment. Please arrive no later than 6.00pm. After being greeted at reception, you will be asked to take a seat in our waiting space. Tea, coffee and snack boxes are made available to patients. Please feel free to ask for more when required.
Initial Assessment
Shortly after arriving, you will have your observations completed by one of our nursing team. Following this, you will be initially assessed by one of our Doctors or Advanced Nurse Practitioners. They will discuss with you the reason that you have been referred to the Same Day Emergency Care, your care pathway and tests that may be required.
Investigations
You will need to wait while staff carry out investigations such as X-rays, tests, blood tests and scans. We will make every effort to inform you of the timings of any diagnostic tests so that you can leave the unit and make use of the other patient facilities within the hospital.
Treatment
Once your results are back for all of the tests that have been carried out, these will be discussed with you, along with any treatment plan that may be required.Treatment will be commenced in the Same Day Emergency care unit where possible and information regarding this will be given to you. Once your care is complete you can usually go home; however, on some occasions, you may need to stay in hospital for further inpatient care.
