РУССКИЙ ЛАГЕРЬ В КАПБРЕТОНЕ
Ко мне не раз обращались, а теперь с приближением летних вакаций, особенно часто обращаются с запросами об условиях лагерной жизни русских национальных разведчиков в Капбретоне − в департ. Ланд. Эти обращения − ко мне − объясняются, очевидно, тем, что знают о моем многолетнем пребывании у океана, в Капбретоне. Отвечать подробно каждому для меня очень затруднительно, и я позволю себе ответить на запросы этой исчерпывающей заметкой о «русском лагере», при любезном содействии газеты.
Я хорошо знаю «русский лагерь» национальных разведчиков − организацию полковника П. Н. Богдановича: знаю лет восемь, с первого его появления в капбретонских лесах, у океана. Теперь его знают тысячи французов Капбретона, Осегора, Сорса, Лабена, С. Венсэн де Тироса, Байоны и Биаррица, а у капбретонцев сложилась даже примета-поговорка: «приехал полковник Богданович, значит − сезон начался». Помню, как семь лет тому совершился «въезд в Капбретон» юной российской рати, крепкими голосами всполошившей мирную станцию лесного морского городка. Пытливо, как бы с сомнением и опаской, поглядывали капбретонцы на шумную ораву неизвестных, которые, выстроивши ряды, двинулись по зеленым улицам, под неизвестные капбретонцам звуки походной песни: «На солнце оружьем сверкая… проходил полк гусар-усачей».
Не прошло месяца и осторожность, и недоверие сменились полным признанием: русские разведчики завоевали капбретонцев. Разведчики, может быть, и не знают чувств населения, но нам, обывателям, сжившимся с городком, ясно видно, на каком счету у капбретонцев − разведчики: заговоришь о них и лица расползаются в улыбку; особенно, конечно, у торговцев.
Лагерь устроился (и по сию пору пребывает) на опушке сосновых лесов, − этих «брынских» лесов во Франции, тянущихся на сотни километров, − на дюнах океанического песка, у лесной реки, впадающей неподалеку в океан. Устроился, и разведчики, «эклезиры», стали мало-помалу своими для капбретонцев, от почтенного г. мэра, доктора Жюнка, добряка-гиганта, принявшего от разведчиков знак пятилетней дружбы, шелковую нашивку, до последнего капбретонского мальчишки, довольно верно насвистывающего чужую лихую песню − «Взвейся, соколы, орлами… полно горе горевать!» Связали себя русские разведчики с Капбретоном: на их юбилейном знаке, в память пятилетней лагерной стоянки на капбретонской земле, − значится капбретонский герб: синее поле океана и на нем − желтый угол, острием вверх, старинное примитивное изображение дюн-песков. Многие жители Капбретона выражали желание получить этот русско-французский знак − знак пятилетнего «союза».
Но каковы же условия жизни «русского лагеря»?
Условия эти превосходны, лучшего и желать нельзя. Воздух − морской, степной и лесной, − все вместе: такой воздух, что первое время аппетит, прямо, бешеный, а сон свинцовый. Что за чудеса! Масло, молоко, хлеб, кофе, − к чему мы давно привыкли во Франции, получают здесь необыкновенный вкус, сладость и аромат. Это подтвердит каждый, хотя несколько дней побывавший в Капбретоне. Такого воздуха нет нигде. Быть может это самовнушение. Вы как будто слегка пьянеете, как случается иногда в горах.
Заведующий хозяйством приходит в ужас, видя перерасход на хлебе: хлебной нормы не существует, или, вернее, есть правило: сколько влезет. Организм скоро приходит в равновесие, в порядок, но порядок вдруг нарушается приливом аппетита, необъяснимого естественными причинами, или, по словам лагерного врача, объяснимого разве «явлениями, еще незнакомыми науке… какими-нибудь таинственными лучами, излучениями песков?.. океаническими воздушными течениями?..» Доктор мне признавался, что на него находит порой бешеный аппетит, и он съедает, к стыду своему − и к ущербу лагерного хозяйства − по четыре тарелки борща и обгладывает две-три огромных кости… − «знаете, с этими хряща-ми… с этим жирком горячим!..» Правда, повар в лагере исключительный знаток дела. К лагерному котлу приписываются за лето многие, родные питомцы лагеря, проживающие по близости.
Климат Капбертона великолепный. Жаркие излучения песков, умеряются дыханьем океана. Воздух солоноватый, густой, смолистый, скрыто налитый иодом. С безоблачного неба весь день обливает солнцем. Этот воздух творит, поистине, чудеса: к концу лета разведчики становятся бронзовыми, полноголосыми, ясноглазыми, широкогрудыми, крепкоколенными крепышами. Не раз провожал я их, в конце сентября, и поражался чудесной переменой. Воистину это было чудо преображения: в июле они были детьми, в сравнении с этими молодцами, набравшими за два месяца и в росте, и в весе, и в грудной клетке, и во всем существе своем. Это чудо силы лесного-морского воздуха, здоровый и сытной пищи, жизни на солнце, сна под открытым небом − в американских палатках, на нарах и соломе, − чудо разумных упражнений, прогулок и походов, чудо − полного равновесия, душевного и телесного. Это чудо от сил природы надо дополнить еще уменьем создать его, талантом руководителя-начальника − полковника П. Н. Богдановича. За годы моего знакомства с жизнью «русского лагеря» я не раз убеждался в этом: передо мной проходили юноши, спокойные, выдержанные, отменно вежливые, веселые, бодрые и почему-то все и всегда красивые, − независимо от природных черт, красивые красотой здоровья и душевного равновесия. Воспитание в русском лагере − тайна кго руководителя-полковника, владеющего редким даром находить мудрых педагогов и образцовых инструкторов. Я не раз слышал от французов: «какие воспитанные! Какая выдержка, выправка… какой ритм!» Разведчика капбретонца различишь издали, среди многих, даже если не знаешь его головной убор − шапочку летчика-молодца. − Издали отличишь − орел! Восьмилетки, и те орлами смотрят, − такой у них смелый, уважающий себя вид. Разведчики-капбретонцы предупредительны, внимательны, вежливы к окружающим.
Для нас, русских, без родины, особенно важно воспитание и укрепление национального духа, чувства. Такое воспитание − краеугольный камень организации русских разведчиков. Им преподают Закон Божий, русскую историю, географию, родной язык. Над лагерем весь день развивается родной флаг на высокой мачте, поднимаемый на заре, при звуках трубы, и опускаемый в торжественной тишине, когда лагерь отходит ко сну с молитвой. Разведчики славно служат почетному званию − «ты − русский!» Мэр Капбретона доктор Жюнка неоднократно высказывал свое восхищение ими − их образцовым поведением, и его «грамоты» с печатями Капбретона хранятся в архиве организации. Физическое развитие и ловкость русских разведчиков отмечены призами-победами их на морских праздниках в Осегоре, на так называемых − осегорских играх» − главным образом, в гребном спорте. Художественная талантливость питомцев «русского лагеря» не раз отмечена печатью, местной и департаментской. Концертные публичные выступления разведчиков вызывают восторги французов и иностранцев. Коренные капбретонцы это знают и гордятся: «наши-то ребята, русские разведчики!» Это чувство связи через место закрепилось в прошлом году знаменательным происшествием.
Лагерь устроил бесплатный концерт, собравший множество посетителей французов и иностранцев. Приехали даже из Биаррица, не говоря уже о близком курорте − Осегоре. Исполнение было блестящее, и французские газеты отметили это большой и восторженной статьей. Одна француженка, сестра влиятельного журналиста из Бордо, как-то узнала, что трое разведчиков должны уехать из лагеря до срока, так как родители их не внесли денег за их содержание в лагере. И вот, не переговорив с начальником организации, не получив разрешения от него − от полк. П. Н. Богдановича, − она обошла зрителей со шляпой в руке, собирая «в пользу неимущих разведчиков». Давали охотно, и француженка собрала что-то около 300 франков. Положение создалось и трудное, и неприятное. Выходило так, что разведчики пригласили на даровой концерт, и вот обошли со шляпой, собирая на свою бедность. Не желая обижать ни зрителей, ни добрую француженку, желавшую от всего сердца помочь бедным, полковник Богданович нашел очень тонкий выход: он поблагодарил публику за приятную неожиданность, за трогательное внимание к разведчикам, объяснил, что разведчики всегда находят поддержку родной среды и с благодарностью объявил, что они отдают эти собранные для них деньги в пользу бедных детей Капбретона. Надо было видеть, как приняли это «жест» французы и иностранцы! Надо было слышать, как кричали: «что за молодцы, эти русские!..» И по всей округе, по всем Ландам побежала слава об этом, как говорили, − «красивом жесте»! Говорили об этом все, и сияли глаза французские. Только и слышалось − «молодцы! молодцы русские!» Этим я и закончу ответ на запросы о «русском лагере».

THE RUSSIAN CAMP IN CAPBRETON
I am often asked this one question, especially now when a summer break approaches. The question is about the conditions of the camp life of the Russian scouts in Capbreton, Landes. (These Russian Scouts followed the rules of Peter's Regiment – the “Toy Army” of Peter the Great – rather than the standard scouts’ principles. Perhaps people keep asking me because I am known to have spent many years by the Ocean, in Capbreton, south western France. It is rather problematic to answer each individual and therefore I shall try to answer your questions about the "Russian camp” in detail on the pages of this newspaper.
I know the "Russian camp" of the national scouts, this organization of the Colonel P. Bogdanovich, very well. Eight years have passed since it was established in the woods of Capbreton, by the Atlantic Ocean. It became a household name to the thousands of Capbretonians, as well as to the inhabitants of Hossegor, Saint-Vincent-de-Tyrosse, Labenne, Bayonne, and Biarritz. Indeed, Capbretonians now have a saying: "Colonel Bogdanovich has arrived – consider the season to be open". I remember the entry to Capbreton of the Russian youths seven years ago, their manly voices awakening a quiet leafy seaside town. Capbretonians were casting keen looks coloured with doubt and apprehension at this noisy crowd of strangers moving in formation along the green streets, singing the marching song, unfamiliar to the inhabitants: "Weapons glisten in the sun… moustached hussars are marching past".
It did not even take a month to change these doubts and apprehension into general acceptance: the Russian scouts won the confidence of Capbretonians. Scouts may not know how inhabitants felt about them but for us who identify ourselves with the town it was obvious how locals regarded them: it is enough to mention the Russian scouts to bring a smile to their faces – especially to the faces of merchants.
The camp was set up (and it is still there) on the edge of the pine forests, forests like those of the Russian Kaluga province, but in France, stretching for hundreds of kilometres on the dunes, by the forest river, flowing nearby into the Ocean. After setting up camp the scouts gradually became friends with the locals, starting from the venerable mayor, Dr. Junqua, a good-natured giant who accepted a 5-year sign of friendship from the scouts, a silk stripe, and finishing with every street boy of Capbreton, who started (almost correctly) whistling a Russian dashing song - "Fly as eagles, guys... don't grieve!" The Russian scouts became bound to Capbreton: Capbreton’s coat of arms – a yellow pyramid representing sand dunes on a blue stripe of the ocean – was placed on their anniversary badge. Many inhabitants of Capbreton expressed a wish to possess this Russian-French symbol of a 5-year “union”.
So what are the conditions of life there at the “Russian camp”?
Conditions are wonderful, no-one would want better! The mix of ocean, steppe and forest air impacts the appetite, making it strong, and making sleep sound. Absolutely marvellous! Butter, milk, bread, and coffee – to which we have been accustomed in France long ago, acquire here an extraordinary taste, sweetness, and aroma. Everyone who has spent at least a couple of days here will agree with me. It is a distinctly local air which I have not found anywhere else. Maybe it is autosuggestion… One feels dizziness here as one may feel sometimes in the mountains.
The camp manager is horrified by the excessive consumption of bread: there is no bread ration; it just doesn’t exist. To be more exact there is a rule: eat as much as you can. One can eat and feel satisfied but soon an inexplicable hunger interrupts this balance. The camp’s doctor explains this unknown phenomenon as “some mysterious rays, radiation from sands?.. the oceanic air currents?.." The doctor confessed to me that sometimes he felt animal hunger and he ate, to his shame and to the detriment of camp’s supplies, four plates of borsch and two or three portions of meat on bones - "you know, with hot fat!.." It goes without saying that the camp's chef is an artist. His kitchen is popular with many living nearby.
The climate in Capbreton is excellent. Heat radiating from the sands is balanced by the sea air. The air is salty, deep, resinous, saturated with iodine. The sun shines all day long from a cloudless sky. The air works miracles here, indeed. By the end of the summer the scouts become tanned, strong-voiced, bright-eyed, broad-chested, and brawny fellows with strong legs. I saw them off at the end of September time and again and was always surprised by this transformation: they were still children in July in comparison with these strong-built lads who grew up, became strong and sound during two months.
This was a miracle of the air brought from the woods and the Ocean; this was due to healthy and nourishing food, life outdoors, and sleep in the open air in the American tents, on the bunk beds and hay, it was due to the exercises, walks and walking trips. A miracle of total equilibrium, both physical and mental, created skilfully by a man, by the camp’s director and head – Colonel P. Bogdanovich.
During the years of my acquaintance with the life of the “Russian camp” I was convinced time and again that I was right: I saw quiet, self-possessed, exceptionally polite, merry, cheerful, and somehow always handsome fellows. Their handsome faces radiated exceptional health and mental equilibrium. Education in this camp is a mystery which is created by its head, the colonel, who has this rare talent to select wise teachers and excellent coaches. I heard Frenchmen saying many times: "What politeness! What self-mastery, bearing ... what rhythm!" One will recognize a Russian scout from a distance even if he does not know how his headgear, the hat of a brave pilot, looks like. One will notice such a fellow from a distance. Even 8-year olds look brave and self-possessed. The scouts are helpful, attentive, and polite to others.
For us Russians without our Russia, it is very important to bring up, protect and strengthen our national spirit and identity. Such education is a foundation stone of the Russian scout organization. They are taught Scripture, Russian History, Geography, and native language. The Russian flag waves above the camp on a high mast. Scouts hoist the flag at dawn with the sounds of a horn, and lower it in a solemn silence, when the camp prepares to sleep with a prayer. The scouts serve a goal: "You are Russian". The mayor of Capbreton, Dr. Junqua, admired them and their exemplary conduct on many occasions. His letters of commendation with the seal of Capbreton are kept in the archive of the organization. The scouts’ physical development and dexterity were recognised with prizes for their victories in rowing competitions during the festivals in Hossegor, the so-called Hossegor Games. Artistic talents of the campers were also recognised with local and departmental prizes. Their concerts delight Frenchmen and foreigners. The inhabitants of Capbreton know this and are proud of the campers: "we are the greatest; our Russian campers!" This friendly relationship was strengthened even more by an important event.
The camp organized a free concert which attracted many French and foreign visitors. People came from as far as from Biarritz, not to mention a closer resort, Hossegor. It was a brilliant performance extensively and enthusiastically covered in the French newspapers. One Frenchwoman, a sister of a well-known journalist from Bordeaux, somehow learned that three scouts would have to leave the camp before the end of the term because their parents did not pay for their stay. Without speaking with Colonel Bogdanovich and without his permission she went to the audience with a hat collecting money for the “poor scouts”. People gave readily and she collected about 300 francs. The situation was difficult and unpleasant because it looked as if the scouts had organised a free concert for the locals in order to still collect money in another way.
Not willing to hurt the feelings of the audience and of a kind Frenchwoman who wanted to help out in all sincerity, the colonel found a very diplomatic way out: he thanked the audience for this kind and unexpected gift, for their touching concern for the scouts and explained that they always find the support in their own community. He declared that they would transfer this money for the poor children of Capbreton. Good heavens! One had to see how the French and foreign audience reacted! One had to be there to hear “well done, Russians!” News about this noble gesture spread all over Landes. People talked about it with joy in their voices: “well done, Russians, well done!”
