Can't speak for the Brits, hope NEVER to have any sort of dealings with their police! Here, the police can show up with a subpeona and cart away boxes of documents on the spot or they can be provided later (usually copies). Pretty standard.

Ref: sub poena - wonder if it works in UK cos I've only ever heard of witnesses being sub poena'ed here to make them attend court

This is what the DOJ in the USA does.

Bush is also trying to get 'administrative subpoenas" for the FBI so they can grab whatever info they want to get.
