Dutch term

op voldoende wijze slagen

Dutch to English Other Education / Pedagogy
I'm translating a diploma and I'm not sure how to get this right.

"To get a pass" or "a satisfactory" seems a bit too straight forward..

Discussion

Jan Van Den Bulcke (asker) Mar 12, 2011:
thank you all!
Kirsten Bodart Mar 10, 2011:
Then it is satisfactorily, yes. 'Adequaat' can mean more than 'bevredigend' which is 'satisfactorily'. But here it is indeed satisfactorily. The sentece in Dutch is a bit strange too...
Jan Van Den Bulcke (asker) Mar 10, 2011:
ok satisfactorily seems totally acceptable to me! thx! to you too Kirsten!
Dave Greatrix Mar 10, 2011:
"has passed the final examination satisfactorily" - I can't really see what else you can make of it. "Adequate" or "adequaat" is also used in Dutch and would suggest to me just scraping over the line.
Jan Van Den Bulcke (asker) Mar 10, 2011:
More context Extract from the source document:

"De examencommissie van de Hogeschool Gent verklaart dat X het eindexamen op voldoende wijze heeft afgelegd."

Voldoende wijze = de graad net onder een onderscheiding.

to pass satisfactorily

Good enough for Cambridge University!

adequately pass

The Dutch term suggests that there is more needed than a normal pass or satisfactory, so 'adequately' seems adequate ;). But if there were more context, we could offer a better judgement.

to graduate

Er is, althans in de US, geen echt equivalent.
Iemand die het toch goed heeft gedaan maar geen Latijn mag toevoegen kan ook graduate honorably, maar dit is toch al meer dan "op voldoende wijze".
Peer comment(s):

neutral writeaway : I don't understand what this has to do with graduating or with the USA
