Embora também tenha tido muita resistência em chamar de "pai", essa foi a tradução que mais apareceu nos textos de referência que encontrei, sem mencionar que acabou sendo a tradução escolhida oficialmente, e portanto, a resposta que escolhi. Contudo, achei "ascendente" a opção mais natural e agradável.
