Spanish term or phrase: expediente esponsalicio
Hello,

I am translating a birth certificate from Venezuela and there is this sentence "Documento que reposan en el expediente esponsalicio". I have researched about "expediente esponsalicio" but I am not sure about the English term for that. How would you translate the sentence?

After that sentence, it says "solicitud de inscripción, copias de cédulas y partidas de nacimiento ..." So, I am guessing the sentence would be something like "documents that are in the marital file".

Any thoughts?

English translation:marriage file
Explanation:
In Spain, 'marriage file' (some websites refer to it as a 'matrimonial file) seems to be the accepted translation. I suppose you could also call it a 'marriage requirements file'.

En primer lugar, los contrayentes deberán contactar con el Colegio de Notarios competente de la localidad donde tuviera el domicilio cualquiera de ellos. El Colegio de Notarios, por un sistema de turno o reparto, designará obligatoriamente el notario donde los contrayentes deberán formalizar el expediente matrimonial.

The matrimonial file is the first phase of the process that the future spouses must follow to celebrate their marriage. For this purpose, this first phase must be carried out before the Civil Registry office, so that the future spouses must both go to the Civil Registry office that corresponds to them, according to their place of residence, and initiate this matrimonial file, submitting an application to that effect, together with all the corresponding documentation.

As a measure to avoid marriages of convenience, Spanish law obliges anyone interested in getting married to start a marriage file. This step is the one that will be used to authorize the assignment of a reserved hearing. This means that a person in charge at the Civil Registry or Notary Public will study your case and approve, or not, the marriage request according to the necessary requirements for its subsequent celebration.

The trouble with 'marriage fie' is that it's a literal translation used by Spanish law firms, which is fine, although I don't really like it. I would probably translate it as 'marriage documentation'.

Banns of Marriage, Notice of Marriage

Explanation:
The official translation of this public and official document is 'bann', however, if you were to translate this to an English speaking country that does not use the old french word 'bann', you may want to use the word 'notice' of marriage which indicates its meaning more clearly.

In England, depending on the circumstances, i.e. foreign nationals getting married.

'If there is not enough notice given for the banns to be read before the marriage is due to take place, or if one or both of you are British but do not live in England (or Wales), the Common Licence procedure needs to be used rather than banns.
If one or both of you is a national of a country which is outside the European Economic Area, you will require a Superintendent Registrar’s Certificate to marry, rather than have banns read.'

Example sentence(s):
  • The Bann of marriage will be published 10 days before the date of the wedding and will be visible to the general public.

neutral  AllegroTrans: Basically, "expediente" means a file or record. Nothing indicates that this refers to banns and your confidence level is way too high.

  -> Thank you, AllegroTrans :-)

agree  philgoddard: I prefer your last suggestion - as you say, it's not really a file. Assuming this is a heading, you could translate "documentos que reposan en el expediente esponsalicio" as "marriage documents provided".

  -> Yes, something along those lines. Cheers, Phil :-)
