Explanation:
Pug-nosed at least add some kind irony when we speak of kids, and Base here has the same meaning as Camp - tourist base, children sports and recreational base (туристическая база, детская спортивно-оздоровительная база etc) would be a verbatum translation but is does not make much sense in English and is nearly out of usage in post-Soviet times.

Sounds like they are recalling time spend there with friends, their activities, often of a patriotic nature etc. Usually children would go there for at least 1 summer month and bond and play together.
