The Internal Audit Service (I.A.S.) exists to help the Institution to make the best possible use of the taxpayer's €uro.

Traditionally auditors have been seen as people who find out what is wrong and blow the whistle. Modern Internal Auditors should also say how to fix it and help management where necessary to do so.

The I.A.S. believes that its job should also extend to promoting better understanding (= Verstehen) of the Commission’s internal control landscape - such as the fact that public expenditure is mostly a medium to high risk business or - the fact that the management of up to 90% of the funds for which the Commission is accountable is actually managed by others.
