Spanish term

foco no hiperintenso en T2

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general) Breast pathology
In a medical training text from Spain for translation to British English.

MRI imaging observation. I understand a "foco hiperintenso en T2" would translate to "T2-hyperintense focus", but what about the "NO hiperintenso"? And what does it even mean? If it is not hyperintense (and I assume not hypointense), what is it?

PHYSICS OF MRI

Tissue can be characterized by two different relaxation times – T1 and T2. T1 (longitudinal relaxation time) is the time constant which determines the rate at which excited protons return to equilibrium. It is a measure of the time taken for spinning protons to realign with the external magnetic field. T2 (transverse relaxation time) is the time constant which determines the rate at which excited protons reach equilibrium or go out of phase with each other. It is a measure of the time taken for spinning protons to lose phase coherence among the nuclei spinning perpendicular to the main field.

In contrast to T1-weighted sequences, which highlight anatomic detail and contrast enhancement, fluid-sensitive T2-weighted sequences depict edema, hemorrhage, mucus, or cystic fluid. ... In the differential diagnosis of breast masses on MRI, most masses that have high signal intensity on T2-weighted images are benign.

isointense focus / on T2

The descriptors used are hyperintense, isointense, and hypointense.

Peer comment(s):

agree Cristina Bouzas, Bsc, MA : Prefix "iso" means "equal to", thus entailing a comparison with another image or focus, which does not seem to be the case.

Todos los descriptores de imagen RM relativos a intensidad son comparadores; hiper/hipointenso (más o menos intenso que la intensidad de fondo de la estructura observada) y no hiperintenso (sin resalte de intensidad; isointense / hypo-isointense)

normointense focus on the T2-weighted images

As the lesion is not hyperintense nor hypointense (referring to the contrast uptake or enhancement in the MRI images), I'd say that the focus is normointense (of normal intensity).
