Dutch term

overgangsbewijs

Dutch to English Other Education / Pedagogy Education
Who can explain what "een overgangsbewijs van 3 naar 4 havo/vwo" is. The sentence reads "je kunt aan het eerste leerjaar beginnen wanneer je in het bezit bent van een diploma vmbo of in het bezit bent van een overgangsbewijs van 3 naar 4 havo/vwo".

Is it simply that you have passed year 3 of your havo or vwo course and can progress to year 4? In any case, a pithy translation is required. Thanks for your help!

summer report; final term report; end-of-year report

een overgangsbewijs van 3 naar 4 havo/vwo = summer report which allows advancing from 3 to 4 havo/vwo

I think this will do, but is far from pithy

anyway, your conception of \"overgangsrapport\" is right

agree Tina Vonhof (X) : a year-end report usually includes a statement that you are allowed to proceed with the next grade.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I've chosen Henk's answer as most helpful as he confirmed that my thinking on the matter was right. Having no direct experience of the Dutch educational system, input from someone who has always proves invaluable. In my final translation, however, I went along with Jarry and Kate's "pass". Fwiw, the translated sentence now reads: "You can enrol on the first year of the course if ... you have passed year 3 of your "HAVO" or "VWO" course"."

certificate of completion/proof of entitlement to enter havo/vwo 4

or something along these lines. I don't think there is an equivalent in English - found one site with a good reference chart on this: Proof of entitlement to enter the 4 th year of HAVO or VWO. ... A certificate is awarded
upon completion of the Basisvorming. Certificates awarded. ...

I\'m also wondering if the idea of \'eligibility\' could be worked in here somewhere.........

bedankt
agree Annelies Vonk : proof of entitlement to enter etc. seems the best solution

Pass

Just plain and simple. If you really want to elaborate you could say pass document or prrof of pass.

overgangsbewijs = proof of prerequisites

or:
proof of transfer, pass(ing), requirements of third to the fourth year...

third year pass

as everyone has said it is not the summer report but the completion of set standards that provide the third year pass entitling the student to enter 4 vwo or havo or whatever. I know this from my four kids' education here in the Netherlands.

you could also translate it as a pass certificate
