Localization and Personal Preferences

Generally speaking, "Personal preferences" is one of the bad habits that lots of people practice (or suffer from!). Localization and Personal Preferences

Generally speaking, "Personal preferences" is one of the bad habits that lots of people practice (or suffer from!). It is when the individual's personal attitudes and thoughts overcome his objectivity and all of his everyday life actions. For example, it occurs when someone annoys every one around him because he suffers from some familial problems or financial difficulties.
We can look at personal preferences from another perspective. Personal preferences can have a bad effect on the individual's sense of professionalism at work.
From the localization point of view, there is some confusion. Personal preferences can destroy the quality of work. It occurs for example if the localizer chooses to use a format for the target text that is different from the format of the source text. More importantly, it occurs more seriously with terminology. We should differentiate between translation and localization here. The translator can add his own touches (sometimes) to his translated text. In other words, the translator should be more creative than the localizer. On the other hand, the localizer should be completely restricted to his source text. Moreover, he should be skeptic all the time about the terminology he uses. This is because every field has its own terminology. For example, the word "instrument" in the field of finance is different from the word "instrument" in music. Thus, every localizer should have specialized glossaries and dictionaries in the field he is translating into.
