Hello,

I would like to start using CafeTran due to the lack of support for Trados and issues with glossaries. Additionally, I find the license price to be quite reasonable (€200 for three years of free updates).

I want to migrate all my translation memories and glossaries from Trados to CafeTran; however, I'm a bit concerned about the transition process. I would really appreciate it if you or someone from CafeTran could answer a few questions I have. Specifically, I

Specifically, I have 11 questions that cover the entire migration process from Trados to CafeTran. I believe these questions would be helpful for other new users who have similar concerns.

1. Can it open glossary database files in SDLTB format?

2. What file extension does CafeTran use to store glossaries?

3. In CafeTran, do glossary terms fail to be recognized automatically, requiring frequent repairs like in Trados, or does CafeTran work without issues?

4. How are glossaries managed in CafeTran? Is there a tool similar to MultiTerm, or is it handled directly within the program? CafeTran?

5. Can a glossary be created in Excel and exported to a CafeTran glossary file? Is there a tool for this? In Trados, the Glossary Converter utility is used to convert Excel files into Trados glossary files, but how does this process work in CafeTran?

6. Regarding translation memories, can it use Trados SDLTM files?

7. What file extension does CafeTran use for translation memory files?

8. Can it open Trados SDLXLIFF files?

9. Can it open Trados SDLPPX package files?

10. Can it return projects in Trados SDLRPX return packages?

11. Is it possible to perform an export/import for bilingual review similar to Trados? In Trados, the process involves exporting the translation file to Word, making the necessary changes in Word, saving the file, and then importing the Word file back into Trados with the changes applied. Can this be done in CafeTran?

Thank you in advance for your time and support.

4. How are glossaries managed in CafeTran? Is there a tool similar to MultiTerm, or is it handled directly within the program? CafeTran?

Internal tools, a good text editor or ModernCSV

5. Can a glossary be created in Excel and exported to a CafeTran glossary file? Is there a tool for this? In Trados, the Glossary Converter utility is used to convert Excel files into Trados glossary files, but how does this process work in CafeTran?

Yes it does. But Excel is not a good tool for terminology management and maintenance. Use ModernCSV instead. See my previous postings here.

6. Regarding translation memories, can it use Trados SDLTM files?

Yes

7. What file extension does CafeTran use for translation memory files?

.tmx

BTW: I'm trying to convince the developer to fully support TSV as an alternative file format for TMs, as I find this sexy file format superior to XML (TMX). As of now, TSV is supported for export and import, but not for (fuzzy) matching of segments.

8. Can it open Trados SDLXLIFF files?

Yes

9. Can it open Trados SDLPPX package files?

Yes

Yes

Yes. Export and import for native projects. Export only for sdlxliff.

BTW: Tracked changes are supported.
