Could anyone please advise which Arabic one would study to live and work in Iraq? Would it be Mesopotamian Arabic, in and around Bagdad? Does ones study both standard Arabic and the \"everyday\" Arabic simultaneously? Thank you for any explanations and advice.

MSA, then add "Gulf Arabic" dialect Feb 6, 2003

Greetings.

Since several regional dialects of Arabic are spoken in Iraq, perhaps the easiest and must useful approach would be to study Modern Standard Arabic (MSA, aka in the Arabic as \"FuSHat\"), then one of the several self-study packages (textbook and supporting audiocassetes tapes) of \"Gulf Arabic\" such as:

1. Spoken Arabic of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, by Clive Holes, pub: Rouledge UK (I think)

Both are available at < amazon.com >.

FWI, most of the older references about \"Mesopotamian Arabic\" tend to be unreflective (and of uneven quality) of considerable diglossia and dialectical changes inside Iraq since the 1960s.

Professor Bruce Ingham at SOAS (UK) wrote a good descriptive article on Mesopotamian Arabic in a 1991 issue of the BSOAS Bulletin.

Furnish your e-mail address, and I can e-mail that article (PDF file) or send you the URL.

HTH. Khair, in sha\' Allah.
