I am filling out a form for a vendor and I am being asked to fill out a tax id. I am not sure what this means. I actually have yet to even get a job through an agency as I have struggled with my lack of experience. When I am able to get one, I am not sure how to create an invoice. Can I do this through Adobe Acrobat? Also, do freelancers have tax id's? In the USA, your Social Security number is your tax ID.
I recommend obtaining a Taxpayer Identity Number (TIN) from the IRS, to keep your SSN confidential. There is no fee for obtaining a TIN.
You can create an invoice with anything (a word processing app, a spreadsheet, etc.). However, you need to be able to keep track of your invoices (to know which customer has paid -- or not --, and to file your tax return.

A worksheet is an cheap and easy way to keep track of invoices. There are also tons of free apps, as well as paying apps.
A bookkeeping class at a local Community College is a also good, and affordable, investment.
I also recommend joining the local ATA Chapter, where you will hopefully get help in administrative issues like invoicing. The ATA has a free Newcomer guide : https://www.atanet.org/career-education/starting-your-career/

I would be wary about using online invoicing tools without first checking the site's cybersecurity practices: is any of my financial data stored in the site? If so, how?
I'd go with Jean Lachaud's advice: keep it simple, like a worksheet. I've done my invoicing via Quicken. Other colleagues swear by QuickBooks, both desktop applications with different aims.

But I don't think it would apply to ProZ.com, which should have enough cybersecurity measures applied. Otherwise, why would we be paying members of such an insecure site? Some of our financial data are well disclosed in the invoice for the membership. I would be warier of some government measures worldwide, especially nowadays...
Anyway, I seldom use this online tool today as most of my clients have their own invoicing system.

I agree with the above suggestion to take a course in operating a small business. Believe it or not, you're trying to start an enterprise. As with most things, it helps to know what you're doing. ▲ Collapse | | | Mario Chávez Egyesült Államok Local time: 22:12 Tag (2024 óta) angol - spanyol + ... Do we know how secure it is? | Feb 5 |
Proz.com is not a financial or government institution, so I would be very wary of any claims or assumptions that it has robust cybersecurity measures in place. Storing invoices in a web platform is very poor practice in my view, unless the platform in question explicitly describes in no uncertain terms what security guards are in place.

Thank you for your invaluable input, Mario. By the way, I use worksheets as well.

In US, your ssn is the tax id, and this gets mentioned in w9 which you will have to submit to the agency for payment.
I use proz invoicing for last 7-8 years or more and find it convenient to use. This is free for proz members.
Actually I have created a template as a standard for my use with the variables/features as I need.

However when you send the invoice from the proz website, you cannot have attachments like receipts, tolls etc.
In this case I send these receipts, expense worksheets, signature sheet, and the invoice in a separate email rather than through proz itself.
If the proz invoice permits attachments, then that will be one less hassle and will become a single billing system. ▲ Collapse | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Invoice Protemos translation business management system |
