Hello,

I would really like to know your opinion on how easy you find to carry out the alignment of paired documents in Across Personal Edition. Since my experience hasn't been exactly rosy I was wondering whether you could confirm this.

Hello,

I would really like to know your opinion on how easy you find to carry out the alignment of paired documents in Across Personal Edition. Since my experience hasn't been exactly rosy I was wondering whether you could confirm this.

My experience is that the alignment is very error-prone resulting in a lot of manual corrections. I do not find the manual correction very user-friendly at all and believe that it involves way too many step that only add another extra effort to a process that is tedious enough without them. I find it a lenghty process that alignment is presented in paragraphs and if you wish to view the aligned sentences you need to open a seperate window to do so.

I was also wondering what would happen if a translator opted during the alignment process (alignment wizard) to import the TM without manual correction. I believe that you would end up with 'garbage TM'.

I've tested very simple and short Word documents. I've checked their content very carefully to make sure that they do match perfectly to give the program a head start. But still the results were terrible. It only matched something like 50% correctly according to its statistics which then turned out not to be a true reflection of the reality when you added to it the outstanding number of wrongly matched paragraphs. I've ended up with sth. like 20% of correctly matched paragraphs.

I've then tried even simpler and shorter Word documents. I can guarantee in both cases that the paragraphs should have matched without problem. It still matched only 6 out of 11 correctly although its statistics showed 90% success.

Have you had a similar experience?

Martina

P.S. I am running Across 4.00 SP3d

Martina,

I am not sure on what you did but so far I have not had any issues like the ones outlined by you. So, in my opinion the alignment is actually rather easy.

However, in any alignment regardless of product in use, the proper preparation of the files (Source and Target) is the key. If you spend the time to prepare the files you will get very good results.

Documents prepared very well Apr 27, 2009

Am I then doing something wrong? Yes, I am currently running SP3d which I was given by Across support but the alignment worked wrong in SP3c too.

I am aware of the fact that the success highly depends on how well the documents were prepared beforehand and that is exactly what I did. I selected two Word documents from the EU portofolio. I have used these documents with Wordfast before and had absolutely no issues with them at all. Of course, I always prepared them very carefully beforehand checking whether the information matched and whether some passages were not in the wrong order.

Across, however, always struggled yielding very unsatisfactory results. Therefore, I decided to make it much easier for Across and cut the size of the documents right down to 2 pages for each language. Believe me, I did make sure that the text perfectly matched, the paragraphs matched and still, Across came up with a pretty messy alignment. It does suprise me and that is why I put this post up.
I then made it even easier and cut the two documents to 1 page per a language only, perfectly matched, still it was unable to match it very well. It missed one match completely and mismatched 4 thus leaving only 6 correct matches.

I can't see what I'd be doing wrong. I'd love to attach the files and the screenshots for you to see but there is no such option on here.

Thus the files should definitely be fine, the only thing then could be something during the alignment Wizard but I doubt it.

Any suggestions?
The results are really terrible! If only I could include a screenshot (it doesn't even allow me to paste it here. What a shame.)
