Hi,

But...:

How can I get the crossterm engine to offer fuzzy recommendations for any of the words in the terminology database? I.e. I have a crossterm entry for apple, the system should also offer recommendations for words such as apples during translations. But it does not, at least not on my system.

I see that the crossterm interface itself does searches with wildcards (*), and I can't get the crossdesk part to do anything similar automatically.

This seems to be a very basic feature and I am puzzled if it is truly not implemented. I have had a similar question about fuzzy concordance searches on this forum which are unanswered, and I see that as a bad sign... (Version: Personal Edition 4.00 SP1c_EN Package version 4)

Thanks for the help in advance.

CrossTerm Issues Mar 13, 2009

Istvan,

first of all I would like to recommend that you upgrade to the latest which is SP3c at this time.

Secondly, in regards to your question concerning fuzzy matches, I think there is a misconception here. Fuzzy translation are only available in CrossTank and not in CrossTerm, and thats by design and (in my opinion) should be so. However what CrossTerm does support is the Stemming. Fuzzy translation are only available in CrossTank and not in CrossTerm, and thats by design and (in my opinion) should be so. However what CrossTerm does support is the Stemming. The word forms of a term (for instance, the plural form) are detected and are automatically traced to the basic form.

Example: For example, if the term Filter exists in crossTerm and you search for the plural form Filters, or the text you are translating contains the plural form Filters, crossTerm will find the term Filter.

I am using it often at my work, where I implemented across last year as well as at my home. It works very well. Also, which Operating system are you using and what language combination are talking about?

Uwe

Stemmer: English yes, Hungarian no Mar 13, 2009

Dear Uwe, thank you.

Just now I tried this and it appears that the English stemmer works sort of OK. On the other hand, my other language pair is Hungarian and the system does not recognise conjugated words in Hungarian, at least as far as I have seen.

Trados is much more flexible, their word match is somehow based on the percentage of characters that match in a word/term rather than a scientific stemming process.

If you think MultiTerm is better go for it. I would not necessarily agree with that but whatever works for you is important.

Now what is missing in across is good documentation in regards to CrossTerm, because not everyone know sit too well yet. Howvere, I was assured that this will be addressed soon, and since support is generally reliable, I am looking forward to it.

No stemming in Hungarian Mar 19, 2009

I got the following response from the Across team:

Dear Mr. Fulop,

thank you for your eMail. Unfortunatelly I have to tell you that we currently do not support stemming function for hungarian language.

Best regards,

Which is a pitty / a major issue, neverthelss makes across difficult to use when translating from Hungarian.

Nevertheless, at least this question is closed.
