That is of course ok, so I let the system install SQL. The installer starts and goes through, but for an unknown reason it cannot configure the services and I get this error:

I am able to install the SQL server from Across installation files, but to no avail, the error message is still there. Someone has a solution for that?

Thanks

are you logged in as admin? Oct 20, 2008

Hi Jerzy:

Usually the first - and only - reason for this kind of problems.

I'm the admin in all my PCs Oct 20, 2008

But logged in as me (in Windows XP this shouldn't make any difference).
In the meantime I've contacted Across and hope for an answer.

Thanks

SQL serwer password... Oct 20, 2008

Vito Smolej wrote:

As I remember, when you try to change the SQL server instance password for Across DB during the installation (it seems natural for me to change it...), something goes wrong during the installation.
As I'm aware about this quirk, I don't remember exactly the message...

Try to reinstall and don't change any settings.
I suppose the SA password is generated randomly in order to prevent the DB sharing.
Not sure, of course.

Cheers
GG

password Oct 20, 2008

It should be sa12345, written somewhere in the manual.

Correction: sa123456

Thing is... Oct 20, 2008

that I am even not able to put a single dot as a password.
Look at the screen shot above - the text is cut in the middle and that's all what I see.
Looks like would the programmer again have tested everything only in their standard environment, not trying to use for example big fonts for the screen inn Windows. And I don't have time to set my fonts to small just and only for the purpose of this installation.

So I'll just wait for the reaction of Across.

SQL server instances... Oct 20, 2008

The password field is displayed on another screen, sure.
You have another SQL Server instance installed?
Normally, Across is the 2nd or 3rd MS SQL server I install.
Try to install first the Visual Studio Express with SQL Server 2005 (available for free from MS).
http://www.microsoft.com/express/2005/
If VS Express fails, you my have some major problem with your OS configuration.
XP Pro, I hope?

Just like Trados guys

not trying to use for example big fonts for the screen inn Windows.

The big fonts often cause problems but I don't think it's the reason why your installation fails.

And I don't have time to set my fonts to small just and only for the purpose of this installation.

So I'll just wait for the reaction of Across.

Well, well... you haven't paid a service agreement? ;P

PS.
I'm a bloody bastard.
I paid PSMA.
They can't ignore the bugs I send now

Cheers

Wow... Oct 20, 2008

Selcuk Akyuz wrote:

LOL
I missed it.

Nevertheless, Across doesn't like (or didn't like) the password change during the installation.
I don't remember the build (probably some 3.5 flavor) but some bugs love to persist.

Cheers

Installation Oct 21, 2008

Jerzy,

In regards to the error message, here is the fix for it:

Go to Start/Control panel/Administrative tools/Services and find the Service SQL Server (ACROSS). Right-click it and open Properties >>Log On. Select Local System account, try to start the service and return to the installation error message to continue the installation.

That solved it for me.

Uwe

SQL Server is installed Oct 21, 2008

and configured to work with the local account.
But the Across installation does still stop at the same place.

No clue what else could I do...

I've tried installing Across a few times in different versions and on different computers and on one of my computers I have exactly this problem. Please post the answer from Across, when you get it.

Thanks!

across installation Nov 4, 2008

Jerzy,

are the protocols Named Pipes and TCP/IP enabled? This is one of these aftersteps not too well documented.

Go under
Start >>Programs >>Microsoft SQL Server 2005 >>Configuration Tools >> SQL Server Configuration Manager to enable them and afterwards restart the services t activate the changes.

All suggested protocols are activated Nov 4, 2008

But what I have are two instances of SQL-Server, one named "across", and one named "sqlexpress".
Beside that, I've tested the installation on a different machine, on my laptop, and also to no avail.
Both machines are Windows Service Pack 3. One runs F-Secure Internet Security, the other McAffee Internet Security...
Across and Microsoft deny that SP3 may be the cause and my customer wanted me to switch the firewall off, but TBH I don't want to do that...
