I've noticed that the total number of words in any text seems to be lower when counted by across than when counted by Trados. The Trados count is fairly close to the count you get in Microsoft Word, but the across count always seems to be significantly lower.
Has anyone else noticed this? If so, does anyone know why this happens??

I'm fairly sure I'm not the only one experiencing this either!

I do quite a lot of work with Across and after I read your post I decided to check and it seems to depend on the document.
I randomly picked a couple of my recently finished tasks and came up with this:
One large HTML document had a word count of 20k+ in Word and 26k+ in Across. (!)
One medium Excel document had a word count of 4465 in Word and 4076 in Across.
One small Word document had a word count of 363 in Word and 289 in Across.

In the last two documents there is a significant amount of numbers which may explain the difference, not so in the first one.
Well, guess this didn't make us any wiser.
I don't know how long you have been using Across but when I first started I also found that it took longer but now when I've got the hang of it I think it is about the same as Trados.

But it seems that your result is due to the way Word analyses HTML files. I chose three HTML files at random and ran them through Word, Across and Trados, with word counts as follows:

So the count in Microsoft Word seems somewhat erratic with HTML files, but Trados consistently gives a higher word count than Across. Are you able to do a word count for your large HTML file in Trados?
As for the slowness issue, my impression is that Across takes longer because of various fiddly bits of work which other tools do not require, but it would admittedly be difficult to carry out a direct, scientific comparison of processing speeds. However, what we can do is to do a large number of jobs with Across and a large number of similar jobs with another tool, keep track of the exact time you spend translating each job (which is always a good idea in any case), and then compare your average hourly rates of earnings for each tool. I have done that, and I've found the average hourly rate to be lower with Across.
In other words, I don't think the lower word count in Across means that the job takes correspondingly less time to do than in Trados; if anything, it might take more time.
