This is part of a poem written by Sen no Rikyu.
Here is the poem:
人生ここに70年、えい、えい、えい。
この宝剣で祖仏も我も、共に断ち切ろうぞ。
私は使い慣れた一つの太刀をひっさげて、
今、まさに我が身を天に放つのだ。

私には仏祖と語順を逆にしたほうがしっくりしますが、これが決まった語順のようです。
そして昔から下記のように熟語として使われてきたようです。

禅宗などで、仏や祖師を超越すること。仏祖の影響から離れて自己自身の面目を発揮すること。
