Spanish term

interesante alforje en el coro.

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Architecture Churches
The text is a brief description of a Spanish church. The full sentence here reads "Las bóvedas en general, de terceletes e interesante alforje en el coro". I cannot for life of me determine what the "alforje" is. It does not appear in any of the technical dictionaries I have or on www.rae.es.

Discussion

trnet Feb 11, 2008:
Thomas. I would call this simply "delicate carved ornamental timber work in the choir". It is on the underside of the choir floor as seen from below, and there are many of these fine examples in Spanish churches.
Noni Gilbert Riley Feb 11, 2008:
"Próximamente comenzarán las obras de conservación y restauración en el alfarje (artesonado de madera) situado bajo el coro de la iglesia parroquial de Santa María Magdalena, de Orgaz."
Noni Gilbert Riley Feb 11, 2008:
Two practicable translations - now for you to decide how much detail you need! (I also tend to think that English readers do not really want as much as the Spanish traditionally get thrust at them in this kind of text...)
Thomas Fryer (asker) Feb 10, 2008:
Name of Church Iglesia de la Asunción in Monreal del Llano in Castilla La Mancha

What is the name of the church? maybe that can help.

interesting artistic carved and crossed ornamental timber work in the choir ceiling

It took me a while to find this beasty. I am more inclined to believe alforje is a typo for ALFARJE which refers to the underside of the choir box.

Of course the choir box ornamental ceiling (artesanado) is the view from below the choir i.e. from the church floor level, as described by the author of the article. Artesanado is the description given by Espasa, RAE and Maria Moliner.

agree Noni Gilbert Riley : Slightly confused - is the choir box up above? But seems v convincing.

agree Noni Gilbert Riley : It solves the problem!

neutral trnet : As you know now, this is not some ornament hanging from anywhere in the choir related etymologically to "alforja".

Interesting woodwork in the choir ceiling

This way you don't complicate things too much.
