English to Portuguese: From an anthology on appropriative writing
General field: Art/Literary
Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English
Considering dictionary definitions as "the words of others" might seem an absurdly large expansion of appropriative literary practice -- if taking words from the dictionary is considered as "appropriation," then every word we write could be said to come from another source. I'm reminded of Francis Ponge's early prose poem "The Augean Stables" which describes how difficult it is for poets to contend with the fact that the words they use are also employed for antithetical political and commercial purposes. Within the writer, Ponge laments, "the same sordid order speaks, because we have no other words at our disposal." Calling up an analogy with another art form, he observes: "We are like painters who, from as far back as can be remembered, would all have to dip their brushes in the same immense can in order to thin out their paints."

Bio
I am a Brazilian translator, copy editor and proofreader,
with further experience in transcription, language teaching and ghostwriting, currently living in
Porto, Portugal.

Recent projects include academic works (on topics including sociology, religion and physical
therapy), documentaries, visual and media arts, and politics-themed podcasts.

I have a postgraduate degree in Media Art from the Berlin University of the Arts, and a bachelor’s
in Media Studies from Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Brazil).

Due to my background in art and media, a strong interest in literature and poetry, and the practice of
copy editing in my native language, I tend to be very diligent in finding translation solutions that
flow naturally and elegantly. That is something I can certainly bring to the projects we work on
together.
