Chema Nieto Castañón Sep 14, 2019:
Hola liz,
liz askew Sep 14, 2019:
Saline, also known as saline solution, is a mixture of sodium chloride in water and has a number of uses in medicine.[1] Applied to the affected area it is used to clean wounds, help remove contact lenses, and help with dry eyes.[2] By injection into a vein it is used to treat dehydration such as from gastroenteritis and diabetic ketoacidosis.[2] It is also used to dilute other medications to be given by injection.[1]

Large amounts may result in fluid overload, swelling, acidosis, and high blood sodium.[1][2] In those with long-standing low blood sodium, excessive use may result in osmotic demyelination syndrome.[2] Saline is in the crystalloid family of medications.[3] It is most commonly used as a sterile 9 g of salt per litre (0.9%) solution, known as normal saline.[1] Higher and lower concentrations may also occasionally be used.[4][5] Saline has a pH of 5.5 (mainly due to dissolved carbon dioxide) making it acidic.[6]

Chema Nieto Castañón Sep 13, 2019:
Surely not in a medical context, Giovanni...

As for saline therapy, that is an interesting one, liz. You might want to add some specific context though. In Spanish, sueroterapia -and fluidoterapia- are general references to the medical use of iv fluids. See for instance here: https://www.google.es/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=http://w...
Giovanni Rengifo Sep 13, 2019:
Clarification Everytime I hear "le pusieron suero a alguien", they refer to "suero fisiológico", which is the same as a saline solution they usually administer to patients to keep them from dehydrating, and I think that's what they're referring to here as well.
liz askew Sep 13, 2019:
Hmm, this has got me worried.
In that case how do we say "saline therapy" or "setting up saline therapy/drip" in Spanish??

Set up intravenous access

Many times one of the first care measures is to establish an intravenous access for fluids, medication, or other treatments. Usually, dripping of saline solution is used to keep the IV line.
Example sentence:

To admit a patient to an intensive care unit, set up intravenous access, and begin frequent monitoring of the BP

administration of saline solution

I think "suero" exclusively refers to a "saline solution". "IV fluids" could be blood, drugs, or other things.

neutral Chema Nieto Castañón : Los sueros (iv fluids) pueden ser de distintos tipos, no sólo salinos; desde glucosados a hipertónicos etc. etc.

Tienes razón Chema.
agree Stephen D. Moore : This, from what we see, appears to be a list of routine tasks to be done on a regular basis.
