*It seems that in journalism, it's often referred to as smart meters/metering, a concept that can include other innovations as well. In technical documents, like the one you're translating, I only see split meters.

Also, it's often referred to as a split prepaid meter or split prepayment meter.

The prepaid meters that we study are known as split prepaid meters, because the actual meter is located outside the home in a locked kiosk, with only the display and keypad inside of the home. Communication between the meter and the in-home display is by wire or radio frequency. This design minimizes the risk of tampering and allows the utility to perform maintenance more easily.
