the term can have a broader meaning than 'century' as others have pointed out, and 'das Säkulum der Aufklärung' for example would be 'the Age of Enlightenment' in English
I just wonder how you can 'überleben' a century, and 'überleben' used transitively frequently has an ironic element, implying something unpleasant or otherwise distinctive about what has been lived through, which could perhaps be more expressively summarised as an 'age' or 'era' rather than the neutral, merely chronological 'century'?
