Source text - French Si l’histoire de la traite négrière transatlantique et de l’ esclavage reste à ce jour méconnue dans son ensemble auprès de nos con-citoyens, il n’en reste pas moins que ce pan de l’histoire de l’humanité toujours occulté, a profondément modifié les rapports nord-sud.
Les répercussions sociales, culturelles, économiques, politiques ont été si violentes que quelle que soit la position où l’on se trouve aujourd’hui sur cette planète, on en subit encore les conséquences. Magistralement bouleversé, le monde ne peut se détourner de son devoir de mémoire.
Il est de la responsabilité de tous de regarder droit dans les yeux ce passé douloureux pour qu’ensemble nous puissions faire notre deuil et œuvrer à la mémoire de ces peuples meurtris. Si la France, à travers la loi dite Taubira (N° 2001-434 du 21 mai 2001), a su donner l’exemple en reconnaissant la traite négrière transatlantique et l’ esclavage, comme crime contre l’humanité, chaque jour, les descendants de ces esclaves subissent sur le territoire français les pires discriminations, et humiliations…
Le 12 janvier 2005, à Lyon des documents historiques sur la traite sont mis en vente aux enchères, ce qui provoque un tollé au niveau des associations militantes et notamment du Collectif des Filles et Fils d’Africains Déportés (COFFAD), portant cette affaire en justice. Tout le monde crie au scandale, à l’humiliation. La presse, les politiques prennent position et pourtant le 16 mars 2005, à Drouot en plein cœur de la capitale française, la vente de documents de même importance concernant l’île de la Réunion, allait passer à la trappe sans la mobilisation de l’association Capoeira Kolors .
Du fait du manifeste, l’Etat fit alors jouer son droit de préemption à hauteur de 4200Euros. Le lendemain, dans le même lieu, à l’appel du Coffad, la mobilisation fut générale, pour un autre lot de documents concernant l’esclavage en Guadeloupe. Mais cette fois le mot d’ordre fut entendu au tribunal de grande instance de Paris , le juge des référés se prononça pour la suspension de la vente et la mise sous séquestre des dits documents. Brève victoire, puisque prochainement, à Drouot, le 14 avril 2005, des documents de même nature seront mis en vente…
Bien qu’un juge en faisant jurisprudence, se soit prononcé pour la suspension de la vente de ce type de documents historiques et faisant partie du patrimoine de l’humanité, l’attitude marchande de ces propriétaires est inacceptable puisque salissant la mémoire des victimes de l’esclavage. De plus il est inconcevable que l’Etat use des deniers des contribuables pour faire valoir son droit de préemption.
Aujourd’hui alors que l’on nous parle d’une France plurielle, que les souffrances sont sans comparaison, il semble bien qu’un déséquilibre soit établi du fait de ces affaires. Entre les citoyens qui prônent le droit de vivre en toute égalité et l’Etat qui usurpe ces droits, qu'en est-il vraiment de la considération de la mémoire vivante des esclaves ? Il n'est pas de notre rôle de nous substituer à l'Etat en manifestant de gré à gré, il en est de la responsabilité de celui-ci de mettre en place et en alerte tous les vecteurs de surveillances nécessaires et de stopper une fois pour toutes ce type de transaction.
C'est pour cela que nous demandons ouvertement une loi ou un amendement à la loi dite «Taubira», interdisant : «la mise en vente de documents, et objets historiques se rattachant aux différentes traites (dont la traite négrière transatlantique), à l'esclavage, à tout type de génocide et crime contre l'humanité… et interdisant toute possession privée de ces dits documents et objets au regard de la loi».
Nous vous invitons donc à signer cette pétition, afin de faire valoir nos exigences auprès de nos députés et que cesse sur-le-champ cette infamie, car c'est ensemble que nous devons construire l'avenir
Translation - Italian Se la storia della tratta transatlantica dei neri e della schiavitù rimane fino a oggi sconosciuta nella sua interezza dai nostri concittadini, resta il fatto che questo lato della storia dell'umanità sempre nascosto abbia profondamente modificato i rapporti tra il nord e il sud.
Le ripercussioni sociali, culturali, econonomiche e politiche sono state talmente violente che qualunque sia il luogo in cui ci si trova oggi su questo pianeta, ne si subiscono ancora le conseguenze. Magistralmente sconvolta, il mondo non può voltarsi davanti al proprio dovere di memoria.
E' responsabilità di tutti guardare diritto negli occhi questo passato doloroso affinchè insieme si possa fare una croce sopra e operare in favore della memoria di questi popoli strazziati. Se la Francia, attraverso la legge chiamata Taubira (No 2001-434 del 21 maggio 2001), ha saputo dare l'esempio riconoscendo la tratta transatlantica dei neri e la schiavitù, come crimine contro l'umanità, ogni giorno, i discendenti di quegli schiavi subiscono in territorio francese le peggiori discriminazioni e umiliazioni...

La stampa, i politici prendono posizione e pure il 14 marzo 2005, a Druout nel cuore della capitale francese, la vendita di documenti della stessa importanza riguardanti l'Isola di Reunion, venivano messi nel dimenticatoio senza la mobilitazione dell'associazione Capoeira Kolors.
A seguito del manifesto, lo Stato fece valere il suo diritto di prelazione sull'autore di 4200 euro. L'indomani, nello stesso luogo, su richiesta del Coffad, la mobilitazione fu generale per un altro lotto di documenti riguardanti la schiavitù in Guadalupe. Ma questa volta la parola d'ordine fu sentita al tribunale dell'alta corte di Parigi, il giudice di giurisdizione volontaria decise la sospensione della vendita e il sequestro dei documenti in questione. Una vittoria breve, poichè, prossimamente, a Drouot, il 14 Aprile 2005, documenti della stessa natura saranno messi in vendita.
Benchè un giudice facendo autorità, si sia pronunciato per la sospensione della vendita di questo tipo di documenti storici e facenti parte del patrimonio dell'umanità, l'atteggiamento commerciale di questi proprietari è inaccettabile poichè infrangono la memoria delle vittime della schiavitù. Inoltre è inconcepibile che lo Stato utilizzi il denaro dei contribuenti per far valere il proprio diritto di prelazione.
Oggi, mentre si parla di una Francia al plurale, che le sofferenze sono senza paragoni, sembra proprio che venga stabilito un disequilibrio a seguito di queste vicende. Tra i cittadini che esaltano il diritto a vivere nella legalità e lo Stato che usurpa i diritti, che n'è veramente della considerazione della memoria viva degli schiavi? Non tocca a noi sostituirci allo Stato manifestando in via amichevole, è responsabilità di questo mettere in atto e in allarme tutti i vettori di sorveglianza necessari e fermare una volta per tutte questo tipo di transazione.
E' per questo motivo che domandiamo apertamente una legge o un emendamento alla detta legge Taubira, proibendo: "la messa in vendita di documenti e oggetti storici che si riallaciano alle diverse tratte (tra cui la tratta transatlantica dei neri), alla schiavitù, a ogni tipo di genocidio e crimine contro l'umanità...e proibendo ogni possesso privato dei detti documenti e oggetti secondo la legge".
Vi invitiamo dunque a firmare questa petizione, allo scopo di far valere le nostre esigenze presso i nostri deputati e affinchè cessi seduta stante tale infamia, poichè è insieme che dobbiamo costruire l'avvenire.

Source text - English Santa Claus lives in the Laughing Valley, where stands the big,
rambling castle in which his toys are manufactured. His workmen,
selected from the ryls, knooks, pixies and fairies, live with him, and
every one is as busy as can be from one year’s end to another.
It is called the Laughing Valley because everything there is happy
and gay. The brook chuckles to itself as it leaps rollicking between
its green banks; the wind whistles merrily in the trees; the sunbeams
dance lightly over the soft grass, and the violets and wild flowers
look smilingly up from their green nests. To laugh one needs to be
happy; to be happy one needs to be content. And throughout the
Laughing Valley of Santa Claus contentment reigns supreme.
On one side is the mighty Forest of Burzee. At the other side stands
the huge mountain that contains the Caves of the Daemons. And between
them the Valley lies smiling and peaceful.
One would thing that our good old Santa Claus, who devotes his days to
making children happy, would have no enemies on all the earth; and, as
a matter of fact, for a long period of time he encountered nothing but
love wherever he might go.
But the Daemons who live in the mountain caves grew to hate Santa Claus
very much, and all for the simple reason that he made children happy.
The Caves of the Daemons are five in number. A broad pathway leads
up to the first cave, which is a finely arched cavern at the foot of
the mountain, the entrance being beautifully carved and decorated. In
it resides the Daemon of Selfishness. Back of this is another cavern
inhabited by the Daemon of Envy. The cave of the Daemon of Hatred is
next in order, and through this one passes to the home of the Daemon
of Malice--situated in a dark and fearful cave in the very heart of
the mountain. I do not know what lies beyond this. Some say there
are terrible pitfalls leading to death and destruction, and this may
very well be true. However, from each one of the four caves mentioned
there is a small, narrow tunnel leading to the fifth cave--a cozy
little room occupied by the Daemon of Repentance. And as the rocky
floors of these passages are well worn by the track of passing feet, I
judge that many wanderers in the Caves of the Daemons have escaped
through the tunnels to the abode of the Daemon of Repentance, who is
said to be a pleasant sort of fellow who gladly opens for one a little
door admitting you into fresh air and sunshine again.
Well, these Daemons of the Caves, thinking they had great cause to
dislike old Santa Claus, held a meeting one day to discuss the matter.
“I’m really getting lonesome,” said the Daemon of Selfishness. “For
Santa Claus distributes so many pretty Christmas gifts to all the
children that they become happy and generous, through his example, and
keep away from my cave.”
“I’m having the same trouble,” rejoined the Daemon of Envy. “The
little ones seem quite content with Santa Claus, and there are few,
indeed, that I can coax to become envious.”
“And that makes it bad for me!” declared the Daemon of Hatred. “For
if no children pass through the Caves of Selfishness and Envy, none
can get to MY cavern.”
“Or to mine,” added the Daemon of Malice.
“For my part,” said the Daemon of Repentance, “it is easily seen that
if children do not visit your caves they have no need to visit mine;
so that I am quite as neglected as you are.”
“And all because of this person they call Santa Claus!” exclaimed the
Daemon of Envy. “He is simply ruining our business, and something
must be done at once.”
To this they readily agreed; but what to do was another and more
difficult matter to settle. They knew that Santa Claus worked all
through the year at his castle in the Laughing Valley, preparing the
gifts he was to distribute on Christmas Eve; and at first they
resolved to try to tempt him into their caves, that they might lead
him on to the terrible pitfalls that ended in destruction.
So the very next day, while Santa Claus was busily at work, surrounded
by his little band of assistants, the Daemon of Selfishness came to
him and said:
“These toys are wonderfully bright and pretty. Why do you not keep
them for yourself? It’s a pity to give them to those noisy boys and
fretful girls, who break and destroy them so quickly.”
“Nonsense!” cried the old graybeard, his bright eyes twinkling merrily
as he turned toward the tempting Daemon. “The boys and girls are
never so noisy and fretful after receiving my presents, and if I can
make them happy for one day in the year I am quite content.”
So the Daemon went back to the others, who awaited him in their caves,
and said:
“I have failed, for Santa Claus is not at all selfish.”
The following day the Daemon of Envy visited Santa Claus. Said he:
“The toy shops are full of playthings quite as pretty as those you are
making. What a shame it is that they should interfere with your
business! They make toys by machinery much quicker than you can make
them by hand; and they sell them for money, while you get nothing at
all for your work.”
But Santa Claus refused to be envious of the toy shops.
“I can supply the little ones but once a year--on Christmas Eve,” he
answered; “for the children are many, and I am but one. And as my
work is one of love and kindness I would be ashamed to receive money
for my little gifts. But throughout all the year the children must be
amused in some way, and so the toy shops are able to bring much
happiness to my little friends. I like the toy shops, and am glad to
see them prosper.”
In spite of the second rebuff, the Daemon of Hatred thought he would
try to influence Santa Claus. So the next day he entered the busy
workshop and said:
“Good morning, Santa! I have bad news for you.”
“Then run away, like a good fellow,” answered Santa Claus. “Bad news
is something that should be kept secret and never told.”
“You cannot escape this, however,” declared the Daemon; “for in the
world are a good many who do not believe in Santa Claus, and these you
are bound to hate bitterly, since they have so wronged you.”
“Stuff and rubbish!” cried Santa.
“And there are others who resent your making children happy and who
sneer at you and call you a foolish old rattlepate! You are quite
right to hate such base slanderers, and you ought to be revenged upon
them for their evil words.”
“But I don’t hate ‘em!” exclaimed Santa Claus positively. “Such
people do me no real harm, but merely render themselves and their
children unhappy. Poor things! I’d much rather help them any day
than injure them.”
Indeed, the Daemons could not tempt old Santa Claus in any way. On
the contrary, he was shrewd enough to see that their object in
visiting him was to make mischief and trouble, and his cheery laughter
disconcerted the evil ones and showed to them the folly of such an
undertaking. So they abandoned honeyed words and determined to use force.
It was well known that no harm can come to Santa Claus while he is in
the Laughing Valley, for the fairies, and ryls, and knooks all protect
him. But on Christmas Eve he drives his reindeer out into the big
world, carrying a sleighload of toys and pretty gifts to the children;
and this was the time and the occasion when his enemies had the best
chance to injure him. So the Daemons laid their plans and awaited the
arrival of Christmas Eve.
The moon shone big and white in the sky, and the snow lay crisp and
sparkling on the ground as Santa Claus cracked his whip and sped away
out of the Valley into the great world beyond. The roomy sleigh was
packed full with huge sacks of toys, and as the reindeer dashed onward
our jolly old Santa laughed and whistled and sang for very joy. For
in all his merry life this was the one day in the year when he was
happiest--the day he lovingly bestowed the treasures of his workshop
upon the little children.
It would be a busy night for him, he well knew. As he whistled and
shouted and cracked his whip again, he reviewed in mind all the towns
and cities and farmhouses where he was expected, and figured that he
had just enough presents to go around and make every child happy. The
reindeer knew exactly what was expected of them, and dashed along so
swiftly that their feet scarcely seemed to touch the snow-covered ground.
Suddenly a strange thing happened: a rope shot through the moonlight
and a big noose that was in the end of it settled over the arms and
body of Santa Claus and drew tight. Before he could resist or even
cry out he was jerked from the seat of the sleigh and tumbled head
foremost into a snowbank, while the reindeer rushed onward with the
load of toys and carried it quickly out of sight and sound.
Such a surprising experience confused old Santa for a moment, and when
he had collected his senses he found that the wicked Daemons had
pulled him from the snowdrift and bound him tightly with many coils of
the stout rope. And then they carried the kidnapped Santa Claus away
to their mountain, where they thrust the prisoner into a secret cave
and chained him to the rocky wall so that he could not escape.
“Ha, ha!” laughed the Daemons, rubbing their hands together with cruel
glee. “What will the children do now? How they will cry and scold
and storm when they find there are no toys in their stockings and no
gifts on their Christmas trees! And what a lot of punishment they
will receive from their parents, and how they will flock to our Caves
of Selfishness, and Envy, and Hatred, and Malice! We have done a
mighty clever thing, we Daemons of the Caves!”
Now it so chanced that on this Christmas Eve the good Santa Claus had
taken with him in his sleigh Nuter the Ryl, Peter the Knook, Kilter
the Pixie, and a small fairy named Wisk--his four favorite assistants.
These little people he had often found very useful in helping him to
distribute his gifts to the children, and when their master was so
suddenly dragged from the sleigh they were all snugly tucked
underneath the seat, where the sharp wind could not reach them.
The tiny immortals knew nothing of the capture of Santa Claus until
some time after he had disappeared. But finally they missed his
cheery voice, and as their master always sang or whistled on his
journeys, the silence warned them that something was wrong.
Little Wisk stuck out his head from underneath the seat and found
Santa Claus gone and no one to direct the flight of the reindeer.
“Whoa!” he called out, and the deer obediently slackened speed and
came to a halt.
Peter and Nuter and Kilter all jumped upon the seat and looked back
over the track made by the sleigh. But Santa Claus had been left
miles and miles behind.
“What shall we do?” asked Wisk anxiously, all the mirth and mischief
banished from his wee face by this great calamity.
“We must go back at once and find our master,” said Nuter the Ryl, who
thought and spoke with much deliberation.
“No, no!” exclaimed Peter the Knook, who, cross and crabbed though he
was, might always be depended upon in an emergency. “If we delay, or
go back, there will not be time to get the toys to the children before
morning; and that would grieve Santa Claus more than anything else.”
“It is certain that some wicked creatures have captured him,” added
Kilter thoughtfully, “and their object must be to make the children
unhappy. So our first duty is to get the toys distributed as
carefully as if Santa Claus were himself present. Afterward we
can search for our master and easily secure his freedom.”
This seemed such good and sensible advice that the others at once
resolved to adopt it. So Peter the Knook called to the reindeer, and
the faithful animals again sprang forward and dashed over hill and
valley, through forest and plain, until they came to the houses
wherein children lay sleeping and dreaming of the pretty gifts they
would find on Christmas morning.
The little immortals had set themselves a difficult task; for although
they had assisted Santa Claus on many of his journeys, their master
had always directed and guided them and told them exactly what he
wished them to do. But now they had to distribute the toys according
to their own judgment, and they did not understand children as well as
did old Santa. So it is no wonder they made some laughable errors.
Mamie Brown, who wanted a doll, got a drum instead; and a drum is of
no use to a girl who loves dolls. And Charlie Smith, who delights to
romp and play out of doors, and who wanted some new rubber boots to
keep his feet dry, received a sewing box filled with colored worsteds
and threads and needles, which made him so provoked that he
thoughtlessly called our dear Santa Claus a fraud.
Had there been many such mistakes the Daemons would have accomplished
their evil purpose and made the children unhappy. But the little
friends of the absent Santa Claus labored faithfully and intelligently
to carry out their master’s ideas, and they made fewer errors than
might be expected under such unusual circumstances.
And, although they worked as swiftly as possible, day had begun to
break before the toys and other presents were all distributed; so for
the first time in many years the reindeer trotted into the Laughing
Valley, on their return, in broad daylight, with the brilliant sun
peeping over the edge of the forest to prove they were far behind
their accustomed hours.
Having put the deer in the stable, the little folk began to wonder how
they might rescue their master; and they realized they must discover,
first of all, what had happened to him and where he was.
So Wisk the Fairy transported himself to the bower of the Fairy Queen,
which was located deep in the heart of the Forest of Burzee; and once
there, it did not take him long to find out all about the naughty
Daemons and how they had kidnapped the good Santa Claus to prevent his
making children happy. The Fairy Queen also promised her assistance,
and then, fortified by this powerful support, Wisk flew back to where
Nuter and Peter and Kilter awaited him, and the four counseled
together and laid plans to rescue their master from his enemies.
It is possible that Santa Claus was not as merry as usual during the
night that succeeded his capture. For although he had faith in the
judgment of his little friends he could not avoid a certain amount of
worry, and an anxious look would creep at times into his kind old eyes
as he thought of the disappointment that might await his dear little
children. And the Daemons, who guarded him by turns, one after
another, did not neglect to taunt him with contemptuous words in his
helpless condition.
When Christmas Day dawned the Daemon of Malice was guarding the
prisoner, and his tongue was sharper than that of any of the others.
“The children are waking up, Santa!” he cried. “They are waking up to
find their stockings empty! Ho, ho! How they will quarrel, and wail,
and stamp their feet in anger! Our caves will be full today, old
Santa! Our caves are sure to be full!”
But to this, as to other like taunts, Santa Claus answered nothing.
He was much grieved by his capture, it is true; but his courage did
not forsake him. And, finding that the prisoner would not reply to
his jeers, the Daemon of Malice presently went away, and sent the
Daemon of Repentance to take his place.
This last personage was not so disagreeable as the others. He had
gentle and refined features, and his voice was soft and pleasant in tone.
“My brother Daemons do not trust me overmuch,” said he, as he entered
the cavern; “but it is morning, now, and the mischief is done. You
cannot visit the children again for another year.”
“That is true,” answered Santa Claus, almost cheerfully;
“Christmas Eve is past, and for the first time in centuries
I have not visited my children.”
“The little ones will be greatly disappointed,” murmured the Daemon of
Repentance, almost regretfully; “but that cannot be helped now. Their
grief is likely to make the children selfish and envious and hateful,
and if they come to the Caves of the Daemons today I shall get a
chance to lead some of them to my Cave of Repentance.”
“Do you never repent, yourself?” asked Santa Claus, curiously.
“Oh, yes, indeed,” answered the Daemon. “I am even now repenting that
I assisted in your capture. Of course it is too late to remedy the
evil that has been done; but repentance, you know, can come only after
an evil thought or deed, for in the beginning there is nothing to
repent of.”
“So I understand,” said Santa Claus. “Those who avoid evil need never
visit your cave.”
“As a rule, that is true,” replied the Daemon; “yet you, who have done
no evil, are about to visit my cave at once; for to prove that I sincerely
regret my share in your capture I am going to permit you to escape.”
This speech greatly surprised the prisoner, until he reflected that it
was just what might be expected of the Daemon of Repentance. The
fellow at once busied himself untying the knots that bound Santa Claus
and unlocking the chains that fastened him to the wall. Then he
led the way through a long tunnel until they both emerged in the
Cave of Repentance.
“I hope you will forgive me,” said the Daemon pleadingly. “I am not
really a bad person, you know; and I believe I accomplish a great deal
of good in the world.”
With this he opened a back door that let in a flood of sunshine, and
Santa Claus sniffed the fresh air gratefully.
“I bear no malice,” said he to the Daemon, in a gentle voice; “and I
am sure the world would be a dreary place without you. So, good
morning, and a Merry Christmas to you!”
With these words he stepped out to greet the bright morning, and a
moment later he was trudging along, whistling softly to himself, on
his way to his home in the Laughing Valley.
Marching over the snow toward the mountain was a vast army, made up of
the most curious creatures imaginable. There were numberless knooks
from the forest, as rough and crooked in appearance as the gnarled
branches of the trees they ministered to. And there were dainty ryls
from the fields, each one bearing the emblem of the flower or plant it
guarded. Behind these were many ranks of pixies, gnomes and nymphs, and
in the rear a thousand beautiful fairies floated along in gorgeous array.
This wonderful army was led by Wisk, Peter, Nuter, and Kilter, who had
assembled it to rescue Santa Claus from captivity and to punish the
Daemons who had dared to take him away from his beloved children.
And, although they looked so bright and peaceful, the little immortals
were armed with powers that would be very terrible to those who had
incurred their anger. Woe to the Daemons of the Caves if this mighty
army of vengeance ever met them!
But lo! coming to meet his loyal friends appeared the imposing form of
Santa Claus, his white beard floating in the breeze and his bright
eyes sparkling with pleasure at this proof of the love and veneration
he had inspired in the hearts of the most powerful creatures in existence.
And while they clustered around him and danced with glee at his safe
return, he gave them earnest thanks for their support. But Wisk, and
Nuter, and Peter, and Kilter, he embraced affectionately.
“It is useless to pursue the Daemons,” said Santa Claus to the army.
“They have their place in the world, and can never be destroyed. But
that is a great pity, nevertheless,” he continued musingly.
So the fairies, and knooks, and pixies, and ryls all escorted the good
man to his castle, and there left him to talk over the events of the
night with his little assistants.
Wisk had already rendered himself invisible and flown through the big
world to see how the children were getting along on this bright
Christmas morning; and by the time he returned, Peter had finished
telling Santa Claus of how they had distributed the toys.
“We really did very well,” cried the fairy, in a pleased voice; “for I
found little unhappiness among the children this morning. Still, you
must not get captured again, my dear master; for we might not be so
fortunate another time in carrying out your ideas.”
He then related the mistakes that had been made, and which he had not
discovered until his tour of inspection. And Santa Claus at once sent
him with rubber boots for Charlie Smith, and a doll for Mamie Brown;
so that even those two disappointed ones became happy.
As for the wicked Daemons of the Caves, they were filled with anger
and chagrin when they found that their clever capture of Santa Claus
had come to naught. Indeed, no one on that Christmas Day appeared to
be at all selfish, or envious, or hateful. And, realizing that while
the children’s saint had so many powerful friends it was folly to
oppose him, the Daemons never again attempted to interfere with his
journeys on Christmas Eve.
Translation - Italian Babbo Natale vive nella Valle Ridente, dove si trova il grande castello dalle molte stanze in cui si costruiscono i giocattoli. I suoi operai, scelti fra gli elfi, i nani, i folletti e le fate, vivono con lui e tutti quanti sono molto occupati da un fine d’anno all’altro.
Si chiama Valle Ridente poiché tutto lì è felice e gioioso. Il ruscello gorgoglia fra sé mentre saltella allegro tra le sue verdi rive; il vento fischia felice fra gli alberi; i raggi di sole danzano dolcemente sull’erba soffice e le viole e i fiori di campo con aria sorridente guardano in alto dai loro nidi verdi. Per ridere bisogna essere felici; per essere felici bisogna essere soddisfatti. E per tutta la Valle Ridente di Babbo Natale la soddisfazione regna suprema.
Da un lato c’è la rigogliosa Foresta di Burzee. Dall’altro si trova l’enorme montagna che contiene le Caverne dei Demoni. In mezzo si estende la Valle sorridente e pacifica.
Si penserebbe che il nostro buon vecchio Babbo Natale, che dedica i suoi giorni a rendere felici i bambini, non abbia nemici in tutta la Terra; e, in realtà, per un lungo periodo di tempo non aveva incontrato nient’altro che amore ovunque andasse.
Ma i Demoni che vivono nelle caverne della montagna cominciarono a odiare Babbo Natale molto profondamente, e per il semplice motivo di rendere felici i bambini.
Le Caverne dei Demoni sono cinque. Un ampio sentiero conduce su fino alla prima caverna, che è una bella caverna ad arco ai piedi della montagna, la cui entrata è scavata e decorata in modo mirabile. In essa abita il Demone dell’Egoismo. Dietro questa c’è un’altra caverna abitata dal Demone dell’Invidia. La caverna del Demone dell’Odio è quella che viene dopo e attraverso questa si passa alla dimora del Demone del Rancore- situata in una caverna buia e spaventosa proprio nel cuore della montagna. Non so cosa ci sia oltre. Qualcuno dice che ci siano delle trappole terribili che portano alla morte e alla distruzione, e questo potrebbe essere proprio vero. Comunque, da ognuna delle quattro caverne menzionate c’è un tunnel piccolo e stretto che conduce alla quinta caverna: una stanzetta gradevole occupata dal Demone del Pentimento. E poiché il fondo roccioso di questi corridoi è segnato dalle orme di molti piedi, ritengo che tanti di quelli che si sono persi nelle Caverne dei Demoni siano scappati attraverso i tunnel verso la dimora del Demone del Pentimento, che si dice sia un tipo piuttosto simpatico che apre volentieri una porticina che immette di nuovo all’aria aperta e al sole.
Orbene, questi Demoni delle Caverne, pensando di avere un buon motivo per detestare Babbo Natale, un giorno si riunirono per discutere la questione.
“Sto davvero rimanendo solo”, disse il Demone dell’Egoismo. “Poiché Babbo Natale distribuisce così tanti bei regali di Natale a tutti i bambini che diventano felici e generosi, con il suo esempio, e si tengono lontani dalla mia caverna.”
“Ho lo stesso problema”, si unì il Demone dell’Invidia.”I piccoli sembrano essere tanto soddisfatti di Babbo Natale e sono pochi quelli che riesco a convincere a essere invidiosi.”
“E questo è un male per me!”, dichiarò il Demone dell’Odio. “Poiché se i bambini non passano attraverso le Caverne di Egoismo e Invidia, nessuno riesce a raggiungere la MIA caverna.”
“O la mia”, aggiunse il Demone del Rancore.
“Da parte mia”, disse il Demone del Pentimento, “è piuttosto evidente che se i bambini non vengono nelle vostre caverne, non hanno alcun bisogno di venire nella mia; cosicché vengo piuttosto trascurato quanto voi.”
“E tutto a causa di questa persona che chiamano Babbo Natale!” esclamò il Demone dell’Invidia. ”Ci sta semplicemente rovinando i nostri affari e bisogna fare qualcosa immediatamente.”
Su questo furono d’accordo subito; ma cosa fare era una questione ancora più difficile da decidere. Sapevano che Babbo Natale lavorava tutto l’anno nel suo castello nella Valle Ridente, preparando i doni che doveva distribuire la Notte di Natale; e al principio decisero di tentare di attirarlo nelle loro caverne e che l’avrebbero potuto condurre verso le terribili trappole che portavano alla distruzione.
Così il giorno seguente, mentre Babbo Natale era alacremente al lavoro, circondato dalla sua piccola banda di assistenti, il Demone dell’Egoismo andò da lui e disse: “Questi giocattoli sono meravigliosamente lucidi e belli. Perché non li tieni per te? È un peccato darli a quei ragazzini chiassosi e a quelle bambine piagnucolose, che li rompono e li distruggono così velocemente.”
“Sciocchezze!” disse ad alta voce il vecchio dalla barba grigia, con gli occhi luminosi che brillavano di gioia mentre si voltava verso il Demone tentatore.”I ragazzini e le bambine non sono mai tanto chiassosi e piagnucolosi dopo aver ricevuto i miei regali e se riesco a farli felici un giorno all’anno sono pienamente soddisfatto.”
Così il Demone ritornò dagli altri, che lo aspettavano nelle loro caverne, e disse: “Ho fallito, perché Babbo Natale non è affatto egoista.”
Il giorno seguente il Demone dell’Invidia fece visita a Babbo Natale. Disse.” I negozi di giocattoli sono pieni di giochi altrettanto belli come quelli che stai costruendo. È una vergogna che debbano interferire con i tuoi affari! Con le macchine riescono a costruire i giocattoli molto più velocemente di quanto possa fare tu a mano; e li vendono in cambio di denaro, mentre tu non ottieni proprio nulla per il tuo lavoro.”
Ma Babbo Natale si rifiutò di essere invidioso dei negozi di giocattoli.
“Riesco a soddisfare i piccoli solo una volta all’anno: la Notte di Natale”, rispose. “Poiché i bambini sono tanti ed io sono solo. E siccome il mio è un lavoro di amore e di bontà, mi vergognerei di ricevere denaro per i miei piccoli doni. Ma per tutto l’anno i bambini devono divertirsi in qualche modo, così i negozi di giocattoli riescono a portare molta gioia ai mie piccoli amici. Mi piacciono i negozi di giocatoli e sono contento di vederli prosperare.”
Malgrado il secondo rifiuto, il Demone dell’Odio pensò che avrebbe cercato di influenzare Babbo Natale. Così il giorno seguente entrò nel laboratorio dove tutti erano indaffarati e disse:
“Buongiorno, Babbo Natale ! Ho cattive notizie per te.”
“ Allora vai via, da bravo”, rispose Babbo Natale. “Le cattive notizie dovrebbero essere tenute segrete e mai raccontate.”
“Non puoi evitare questa, comunque”, dichiarò il Demone; “poiché nel mondo c’è un gruppetto che non crede a Babbo Natale e, questi, sei costretto ad odiarli aspramente, poiché ti hanno molto offeso.”
“Sciocchezze e stupidaggini!”, urlò Babbo Natale.
“E ci sono altri che si irritano perché rendi i bambini felici e si burlano di te e ti chiamano vecchio stupido svitato! Hai proprio ragione ad odiare questi vili diffamatori e dovresti vendicarti di loro per le loro parole cattive.”
“Ma non li odio!”, esclamò Babbo Natale con sicurezza.”Queste persone non mi fanno alcun male, ma semplicemente rendono infelici loro stessi e i bambini. Poveretti! Preferirei aiutarli un giorno l’altro piuttosto che far loro del male.”
In verità, i Demoni non riuscirono a tentare il vecchio Babbo Natale in nessun modo. Al contrario, era scaltro abbastanza per vedere che lo scopo delle loro visite era di creare guai e scompiglio, e la sua risata allegra sconcertò i malvagi e mostrò loro la follia di tale impresa. Così abbandonarono le parole dolci e si convinsero ad usare la forza.
Era risaputo che non poteva accadere nulla di male a Babbo Natale fin quando si trovava nella Valle Ridente, poiché le fate, gli elfi e i nani lo proteggono. Ma la notte di Natale egli conduce le sue renne fuori nel mondo, trasportando una slitta piena di giochi e doni meravigliosi per i bambini; e quello era il momento e l’occasione in cui i suoi nemici avevano la migliore opportunità di fargli del male. Così i Demoni prepararono il loro piano e aspettarono l’arrivo della Vigilia di Natale.
La luna splendeva grande e bianca nel cielo e la neve si posava friabile e luccicante sul terreno mentre Babbo Natale faceva schioccare la frusta e partiva dalla valle verso il mondo aperto al di là. La grossa slitta era stipata di enormi sacchi di doni e nel momento in cui le renne si lanciarono a gran velocità il nostro buon vecchio Babbo Natale si mise a ridere, a fischiare e a cantare per la gran gioia. Poiché di tutta la sua vita allegra questo era il giorno dell’anno in cui era più felice: il giorno in cui con amore donava ai bambini i tesori del suo laboratorio.
Sarebbe stata una notte indaffarata per lui, lo sapeva bene. Mentre fischiava, urlava e faceva schioccare ancora la frusta, ripassò mentalmente i paesi, le città e le fattorie dove era atteso e calcolò di avere abbastanza regali per tutti e rendere felice ogni bambino. Le renne sapevano esattamente cosa ci si aspettava da loro e procedevano a così grande velocità che le loro zampe sembravano toccare appena il terreno ricoperto di neve.
All’improvviso accadde una cosa strana: una fune partì attraverso la luce della luna e un grosso cappio alla sua estremità si posò sulle braccia e il corpo di Babbo Natale e si tese. Prima che potesse fare forza o anche gettare un urlo, fu sbalzato dal suo posto sulla slitta e cadde a testa sotto in un cumulo di neve, mentre le renne procedevano a gran velocità con il carico di giochi, trasportandolo via in breve tempo lontano dalla vista e dall’udito.
Un evento così sorprendente confuse il vecchio Babbo Natale per un momento e una volta ripresi i sensi scoprì che i Demoni malvagi lo avevano tirato fuori dal cumulo di neve e legato stretto con molti passaggi della robusta fune. E poi portarono Babbo Natale rapito nella loro montagna, dove gettarono il prigioniero in una caverna segreta e lo incatenarono al muro di roccia così da non poter fuggire.
“Ah, ah!”, risero i Demoni, strofinandosi le mani con gioia crudele. “Cosa faranno ora i bambini? Quanto piangeranno, strepiteranno e si infurieranno quando scopriranno che non ci sono giocattoli nelle loro calze e niente regali sotto l’albero di Natale! Quante punizioni riceveranno dai loro genitori e come si affolleranno verso le nostre Caverne di Egoismo, Invidia, Odio e Rancore! Abbiamo fatto una cosa davvero intelligente, noi Demoni delle Caverne!”
Ora, era capitato che quella Vigilia di Natale il buon Babbo Natale avesse portato con sé nella slitta Nuter, l’Elfo, Peter, il Nano, Kilter, il Folletto e una fatina di nome Wisk – i suoi quattro assistenti preferiti. Questa piccola gente, che egli spesso aveva considerato molto utile nell’aiutarlo a distribuire i doni ai bambini, nel momento in cui il loro capo fu trascinato così d’improvviso dalla slitta, si trovavano tutti tranquillamente stipati sotto il sedile, dove il vento freddo non poteva raggiungerli.
I piccoli immortali non sapevano nulla della cattura di Babbo Natale, se non poco tempo dopo la sua sparizione. Alla fine cominciò a mancare loro la sua voce allegra e, poiché il loro capo cantava o fischiettava sempre durante i suoi viaggi, il silenzio li avvertì che qualcosa non andava.
La piccola Wisk sporse la testa da sotto il sedile e scoprì che Babbo Natale era scomparso e che nessuno guidava il volo delle renne.
“Oooh !”, chiamò ad alta voce e le renne ubbidientemente diminuirono la velocità e si fermarono.
Peter, Nuter e Kilter saltarono tutti sul sedile e guardarono indietro verso la traccia lasciata dalla slitta. Ma Babbo Natale era stato lasciato miglia e miglia indietro.
“Che cosa facciamo?”, domandò Wisk con ansia, con tutta la gioia e la furbizia ormai scomparse dal volto minuto a causa di questo enorme disastro.
“Dobbiamo subito tornare indietro e trovare il nostro capo”, disse Nuter l’Elfo, che pensava e parlava con ponderatezza.
“No, no”, esclamò Peter il Nano, su cui, per quanto fosse bisbetico e sgarbato, si poteva sempre fare affidamento durante un’emergenza. “Se ritardiamo o torniamo indietro, non ci sarà tempo per consegnare i giochi ai bambini prima del mattino e questo farà dispiacere Babbo Natale più di ogni altra cosa.”
“E’ certo che qualche creatura malvagia l’abbia catturato”, aggiunse Kilter pensoso, “e il loro scopo deve essere di rendere infelici i bambini. Così il nostro primo dovere è di distribuire i giochi con la stessa cura come se Babbo Natale in persona fosse qui. Dopo possiamo andare a cercare il nostro capo e metterlo facilmente al sicuro.”
Questo sembrò un consiglio tanto buono e ragionevole che gli altri decisero subito di adottare. Così Peter il Nano chiamò le renne e i fedeli animali scattarono di nuovo in avanti e volarono sopra le colline e le vallate, attraverso le foreste e le pianure, fin quando giunsero alle case dove i bambini dormivano, sognando i bei doni che avrebbero trovato la mattina di Natale.
I piccoli immortali si erano dati un compito difficile; poiché, sebbene avessero aiutato Babbo Natale in molti dei suoi viaggi, il capo li aveva sempre diretti, guidati e detto loro esattamente quello che lui voleva che facessero. Ma ora dovevano distribuire i giochi secondo il loro giudizio e non capivano i bambini così bene come il vecchio Babbo Natale. Nessuna meraviglia dunque se fecero qualche errore divertente.
Mamie Brown, che desiderava una bambola, ebbe invece un tamburo; e un tamburo è inutile per una bambina che ama le bambole. E Charlie Smith, che adora correre e giocare all’aria aperta e che voleva degli stivali di gomma nuovi per tenere asciutti i piedi, ricevette una scatola da cucito piena di tessuti colorati, fili e aghi, che lo fecero irritare così tanto che senza pensarci definì il nostro caro Babbo Natale un truffatore.
Se ci fossero stati così tanti errori i Demoni avrebbero raggiunto il loro scopo malvagio e avrebbero reso infelici i bambini. Ma i piccoli amici dell’assente Babbo Natale lavorarono con onestà e intelligenza per realizzare le idee del loro capo e fecero molti meno errori di quanto ci si potesse aspettare in tali insolite circostanze.
E sebbene lavorassero il più velocemente possibile, era cominciato a spuntare il giorno prima che i giochi e gli altri regali fossero tutti consegnati; così per la prima volta in molti anni le renne trotterellarono ritornando alla Valle Ridente in piena luce del giorno, con il sole splendente che faceva capolino dal bordo della foresta a dimostrazione che erano molte ore indietro dal loro solito.
Dopo aver messo le renne nella stalla, il gruppetto cominciò a domandarsi in che modo poter liberare il loro capo; e si resero conto di dover scoprire, prima di tutto, cosa gli fosse capitato e dove si trovasse.
Così Wisk la fata volò verso le stanze della Regina delle Fate, che si trovava nel profondo della Foresta di Burzee e una volta lì, non le ci volle molto per scoprire tutto sui Demoni cattivi e di come avessero rapito Babbo Natale per impedirgli di rendere felici i bambini. La Regina delle Fate promise il suo aiuto e poi, forte di questo sostegno potente, Wisk volò indietro dove Nuter, Peter e Kilter l’aspettavano, e i quattro discussero insieme e organizzarono un piano per liberare il loro capo dai nemici.
È possibile che Babbo Natale non fosse felice come al solito la notte seguente la sua cattura. Poiché, sebbene avesse fiducia nell’ingegno dei suoi piccoli amici, non poteva evitare di preoccuparsi un po’ e uno sguardo ansioso si insinuava a volte nei suoi vecchi occhi gentili al pensiero della delusione che potevano aspettarsi i suoi cari bambini. E i Demoni, che gli facevano la guardia a turno, uno dopo l’altro, non mancavano di schernirlo della sua condizione impotente con parole sprezzanti.
Quando giunse l’alba del giorno di Natale il Demone del Rancore stava facendo la guardia al prigioniero, e la sua lingua era più affilata di quella degli altri.
“ I bambini si stanno svegliando, Babbo Natale!” gridò. “Si sveglieranno per trovare le loro calze vuote! Ah, Ah! Quanto strepiteranno, si lamenteranno e batteranno i piedi per la rabbia! Le nostre caverne saranno piene oggi, vecchio mio! Le nostre caverne saranno piene di sicuro!”
Ma a questo, come ad altri insulti simili, Babbo Natale non dava nessuna risposta. Era molto afflitto dalla sua cattura, è vero, ma il coraggio non lo abbandonava. E, trovando che il prigioniero non replicava alle sue beffe, il Demone del Rancore andò via subito e mandò il Demone del Pentimento a prendere il suo posto.
Questo ultimo personaggio non era così sgradevole come gli altri. Aveva lineamenti raffinati e gentili e la voce aveva un tono morbido e piacevole.
“I miei fratelli Demoni non si fidano molto di me”, disse, mentre entrava nella caverna; “è mattina adesso e il danno è fatto. Non puoi andare dai bambini di nuovo prima di un altro anno.”
“E’ vero”, rispose Babbo Natale, in maniera quasi allegra; “La Notte di Natale è passata e per la prima volta in secoli non sono andato dai miei bambini.”
“I piccoli saranno enormemente delusi”, mormorò il Demone del Pentimento, quasi con rammarico; “ma non si può più fare nulla per questo adesso. Il loro dolore probabilmente renderà i bambini egoisti, invidiosi e pieni di odio e se vengono alle Caverne dei Demoni oggi avrò l’opportunità di condurne qualcuno alla mia Caverna del Pentimento.”
“Non ti penti mai, tu?” domandò Babbo Natale con curiosità.
“Oh, si, certo!” rispose il Demone.”Anche adesso mi pento di aver collaborato alla tua cattura. Naturalmente è troppo tardi per rimediare al male fatto; ma il pentimento, lo sai, può sopraggiungere solo dopo un’azione o un pensiero malvagio, poiché al principio non c’è niente di cui pentirsi”.
“Capisco”, disse Babbo Natale.”Quelli che evitano il male non devono mai visitare la tua caverna.”
“Come regola, è vero”, replicò il Demone; “Perciò tu, che non hai fatto alcun male, stai per visitare la mia caverna all’istante; poiché, per dimostrare che mi pento con sincerità del mio contributo alla tua cattura, ti permetterò di fuggire.”
Questo discorso sorprese enormemente il prigioniero, fin quando non considerò che era proprio quello che ci si sarebbe aspettato dal Demone del Pentimento. Questi subito si premurò di disfare nodi che stringevano Babbo Natale e sciolse le catene che lo legavano al muro. Poi lo condusse attraverso un lungo tunnel finché entrambi non spuntarono nella Caverna del Pentimento.
“Spero che vorrai perdonarmi”, disse il Demone in tono supplichevole. “Non sono cattivo, sai; e credo di fare tanto del bene nel mondo.”
Detto ciò, aprì una porta sul retro che fece entrare un raggio di sole e Babbo Natale annusò l’aria fresca pieno di gratitudine.
“Non porto rancore”, disse al Demone, con voce gentile; “e sono certo che il mondo sarebbe un posto triste senza di te. Dunque, buongiorno e Buon Natale a te!”
Con queste parole uscì a salutare il mattino luminoso e un momento dopo arrancava, fischiettando a bassa voce fra sé, sulla strada di casa nella Valle Ridente.
Marciando sulla neve verso la montagna vi era un vasto esercito, composto dalle più curiose creature immaginabili. Vi era un numero infinito di nani della foresta, rudi e curvi nell’aspetto come i rami nodosi degli alberi che curavano. E vi erano delicati elfi dei campi, ognuno con l’emblema del fiore o della pianta che custodiva. Dietro di questi vi erano molte fila di folletti, gnomi e ninfe e nella retroguardia migliaia di stupende fate fluttuavano in magnifico schieramento.
Questo meraviglioso esercito era guidato da Wisk, Peter, Nuter e Kilter, che lo avevano messo insieme per liberare Babbo Natale dalla sua prigionia e punire i Demoni che avevano osato portarlo via dai suoi adorati bambini.
E, sebbene sembrassero tanto luminosi e quieti, i piccoli immortali erano armati di poteri che sarebbero stati terribili per coloro i quali fossero incorsi nella loro ira. Che sventura per i Demoni delle Caverne se questo potente esercito di vendetta li avesse mai incontrati!
Ma ecco che a incontrare i suoi leali amici apparve l’imponente forma di Babbo Natale, la barba bianca fluttuava nella brezza e i gli occhi luminosi brillavano di piacere a questa dimostrazione di affetto e venerazione che aveva ispirato i cuori delle più potenti creature al mondo.
E mentre si raggruppavano attorno a lui e danzavano con gioia per il suo ritorno al sicuro, li ringraziò profondamente per il loro sostegno. Ma Wisk, Nuter, Peter e Kilter, li abbracciò con affetto.
“E’ inutile inseguire i Demoni”, disse Babbo Natale all’esercito. “Occupano il loro posto nel mondo e non si possono distruggere. Ma comunque è un gran peccato”, continuò pensosamente.
Così le fate, i nani, i folletti e i gli elfi scortarono insieme il buon uomo al suo castello e lo lasciarono a discutere gli eventi della notte con i suoi piccoli aiutanti.
Wisk si era già resa invisibile e volò per il mondo per vedere come se la passavano i bambini in questa luminosa mattina di Natale; e quando ritornò, Peter aveva terminato di raccontare a Babbo Natale in che modo avessero distribuito i regali.
“Siamo stati proprio bravi,” gridò la fata con voce soddisfatta; “poiché ho trovato pochi bambini scontenti stamattina. Però, non devi farti catturare più, mio caro capo; perché potremmo non essere così fortunati un’altra volta nel realizzare le tue idee.”
Poi riportò gli errori che erano stati fatti e che non aveva scoperto prima del suo giro di ispezione. E Babbo Natale immediatamente la spedì con degli stivali di gomma per Charlie Smith e una bambola per Mamie Brown; così da rendere felici anche quei due delusi.
Per quanto riguarda i malvagi Demoni delle Caverne, erano pieni di rabbia e dispetto quando scoprirono che la loro astuta cattura di Babbo Natale era finita in nulla. Infatti, nessuno in quella mattina di Natale sembrava essere affatto egoista, invidioso o pieno di rancore. E, rendendosi conto che il protettore dei bambini aveva tanti amici potenti e che era da folli opporvisi, i Demoni non tentarono più di interferire con i suoi viaggi la Vigilia di Natale.

In 2016 I worked as translator and proof-reader for the INGV (National Institute for Volcanology) in my town.
