_COMMON_NAME_ prefers humid environments, so it should be watered regularly to keep the culture media moist. In high temperatures, if not watered sufficiently, the stems of the plant are liable to fall and the leaves are apt to wither. For outdoor or pot planting, as long as it is in the plant’s growth season, water the plant when the soil feels dry to the touch, water the soil until it is totally wet, and then drain excess water. Note that the watering amount should not be too much, as water accumulated in the pot can cause root rot.
The varieties of begonias with ornamental leaves are in vigorous growth in summer. Besides regular watering, it needs to be sprayed several times a day to keep the relative humidity at 56%-60%. In winter, _COMMON_NAME_ grows slowly, and the amount of watering can be reduced accordingly. It can be watered once every 3-4 weeks until it grows again in spring.
Pests and Diseases
Leaf Spot: Fungal leaf spot disease often occurs in warm and humid seasons at the end of spring. Many clear-edged brown dots will appear on the infected leaves, followed by a water stain appearance. Cultivate plants carefully so as to avoid infection of bacteria at the beginning of cutting propagation. Avoid irrigating from the top of the plant whenever possible, and fertilize at slightly lower concentrations. These measures can help reduce the incidence of the disease. Any infected leaves found should be destroyed right away. Once leaf spot disease appears, it is necessary to improve ventilation in the surroundings to avoid excessive local humidity. Removing and destroying infected leaves in time is essential, and change or cover the surface of the mulch to prevent the spread of pathogens. Leaf spot disease can be controlled effectively by spraying Bordeaux mixture or specific fungicide pesticides.
Root Rot: If the stems and roots of plants appear to be black and mushy, even spread to the leaves, it may be infected by root rot, accompanied with thin roots and leaves etiolating. Root and stem rot often occur in patches. For the purpose of preventing this disease, it should be controlled at the source from the beginning. That is to say, take sound disinfection measures beginning at propagation. It is necessary to control daily water supply and dropsy, and to regularly remove rotten branches and leaves during daily maintenance.
Propagation
_COMMON_NAME_ is usually propagated by cutting. Stem cutting can be carried out at room temperature all year round, but it has the best effect in late spring and early summer, with fast rooting speed and high survival rate. The tops of plump stems are often used as scions. It is better not to use flower buds as scions.
Leaf cuttings work best in spring and fall. It can also be carried out at room temperature or in winter, but rooting speed is relatively slow. The cuttings should be fully developed mature leaves. Leaves that are too tender or aging heal and root slowly and the probability of forming mature seedlings is low.
Cuttings should be placed in well-drained containers, and a mixture of vermiculite, peat and perlite can be used as the culture media. Keep it in a bright and warm place, away from direct sunlight and ensure that the soil contains a small amount of water to keep it moist.

In caso di semina in ambienti esterni o in vaso, purché si tratti della sua stagione di crescita, quando il terreno risulta secco al tatto innaffiare la pianta, poi, innaffiare il terreno finché non diventa completamente umido e infine drenare l’acqua in eccesso. Tenere presente che la quantità d’acqua non deve essere eccessiva, poiché se accumulata nel vaso può causare il marciume radicale.
Nella stagione estiva la varietà di begonie subisce una crescita rigogliosa. In aggiunta a innaffiature abituali, è opportuno irrorare la pianta più volte al giorno per mantenere il livello di umidità generale al 56%-60%. Durante la stagione invernale, _NOME_COMUNE_ è soggetta a una crescita lenta, pertanto la quantità d’acqua può essere regolata di conseguenza. La pianta può essere innaffiata una volta ogni 3-4 settimane fino a quando non crescerà nuovamente nella stagione primaverile.
Leaf Spot: questa malattia fungina che affligge il fogliame spesso si verifica durante la stagione calda e umida verso la fine della primavera. Diverse macchie marroni dai contorni netti appariranno sulle foglie infette, accompagnate da un aspetto simile a delle macchie d’umidità. Coltivare la pianta con cura, in modo da evitare infezioni batteriche all’inizio della talea. Se possibile, evitare di irrigare la pianta dall’alto e usare concentrazioni di fertilizzante leggermente più basse. Queste procedure permettono di ridurre il rischio di tale malattia. Qualsiasi foglia infetta trovata deve essere eliminata prontamente. Una volta scomparsa la malattia, è necessario incrementare la circolazione d’aria nell’ambiente circostante, allo scopo di evitare una quantità eccessiva di umidità locale. È essenziale rimuovere ed eliminare in tempo le foglie malate e sostituire il pacciame o ricoprirne la superfice per prevenire la diffusione degli agenti patogeni. La malattia può essere efficacemente tenuta sotto controllo tramite l’impiego della poltiglia bordolese o di appositi pesticidi fungicidi.
Marciume radicale: Se gli steli e la radice delle piante appaiono di colore nero, sembrano molli fino alla zona delle foglie e in più la radice appare sottile e le foglie stesse sono eziolate, potrebbe trattarsi di infezione da marciume radicale. Il marciume della radice e degli steli si verifica spesso a chiazze. Per prevenire l’insorgere di questa malattia, deve essere tenuta sotto controllo fin dall’inizio. In altre parole, vanno adottate adeguate tecniche di disinfestazione fin dalla diffusione della pianta. Occorre monitorare quotidianamente la rete idrica e la presenza di idropisia e rimuovere i rami e le foglie marce nel corso della manutenzione giornaliera.
Riproduzione
La riproduzione di _NOME_COMUNE_ avviene generalmente per talea. Il taglio può essere effettuato a temperatura ambiente in ogni periodo dell’anno, ma produce i suoi effetti migliori in tarda primavera e a inizio estate, quando la velocità di attecchimento e la probabilità di sopravvivenza sono maggiori. Solitamente, come nesti vengono usati gli steli grossi. È sconsigliato, invece, usare le gemme.
La talea è maggiormente efficace nel periodo primaverile e autunnale. Può essere effettuata anche a temperatura ambiente o nel periodo invernale, ma la velocità di attecchimento è alquanto lenta. La talea deve essere eseguita quando le foglie hanno raggiunto il completo sviluppo. Le foglie troppo tenere o invecchiate guariscono e attecchiscono lentamente è la probabilità di crescita di germogli maturi è bassa.
Le talee vanno riposte in contenitori adeguatamente drenanti e un composto di vermiculite torba e perlite può essere utilizzato come mezzo di coltura. Questo deve essere conservato in un luogo luminoso e caldo, al riparo dalla luce solare diretta e per mantenerlo umido, bisogna accertarsi che il terriccio contenga una piccola quantità d’acqua.

Luigino Piccolo (Giuti) nasce a Udine, studia lettere a Padova con l’intenzione di fare poi il restauratore e nel 1980 arriva a Roma contattato da Paolo Tommasi, scenografo e costumista abituale di Giancarlo Cobelli. Dopo due anni come assistente ai costumi, incontra Piero Farani che gli propone di aiutarlo nella conduzione della storica sartoria dove sono stati realizzati i costumi per gran parte dei capolavori del cinema italiano degli anni 60 & 70. Tutto questo grazie alla collaborazione con Danilo Donati, abituale costumista di Pasolini, Fellini e Zeffirelli, due premi Oscar e innumerevoli altri premi.
Dal 1997, dopo la scomparsa di Farani, le redini della sartoria passano direttamente nelle sue mani; senza rinnegare niente del passato, la sartoria si è orientata nella ricostruzione storica del costume e, con grande vanto, tra i clienti degli ultimi anni c’è Colleen Atwood, la costumista di Tim Burton, che di Oscar ne ha vinti ben 4.
Partendo da un piccolo fundus trovato in sartoria, negli anni Piccolo ha creato una notevole collezione di abiti autentici, oltre tremila pezzi, che vanno dalla metà del 1700 alle collezioni di Alta Moda degli anni 60; materiale che viene utilizzato solo come materia di studio, indispensabile per rifare filologicamente l’epoca.
Da ormai cinque anni insegna, con grande passione ricambiata dagli studenti, Storia del cinema allo IED di Roma e, solo da un anno, Storia del costume all’Accademia di moda e costume, sempre di Roma.
Translation - English Luigino Piccolo (Giuti) was born in Udine and he studied Literature in Padua, aiming to become a restorer. In 1980 he decides to move to Rome, where he gets in touch with Paolo Tommasi, longtime art director and costume designer for Giancarlo Cobelli. Two years after working as the costume designer assistant, he gets acquainted with Piero Farani, who asks for his help with the management of the historical tailor’s shop where the costumes of most of Italian cinematic masterpieces from the ‘60s and ‘70s have been designed. All this was possible thanks to the assistance of Danilo Donati, longtime costume designer for Pasolini, Fellini and Zeffirelli and winner of two Academy Awards and several other awards.
Since Farini’s death in1997, Luigino Piccolo has been in charge of the tailor’s shop. Without giving up anything from the past, the shop is now geared towards the designing of historical costumes and is proud to count, among its clients, Colleen Atwood, the custom designer for Tim Burton and four-time Academy Award winner.
Starting with a small “fundus” found in the tailor’s shop, throughout the years, Piccolo has been designing a significant collection of over three thousand authentic clothes reproducing the ones from the half of the 18th century to the haute couture collections from the ’60s. The material is used for study subject only, essential to reenact the vibes of the period from a philological point of view.
For five years he has been teaching History of Cinema at IED (European Institution of Design) in Rome, and History of Costumes at the Fashion School for a year now, with a great passion shared by his students.

Ideatore e direttore di A-tube, the Global Animation Film Festival e di A-tube Review 2019. Con Mimesis ha pubblicato il saggio “Indiana Jones e il Cinema di Animazione” (2011), e le monografie “Star Wars. L’Epoca Lucas” (2017), "Superman&Co. Codici del Cinema e del Fumetto" (2018).
