ينتشر نظام "الكتاب المفتوح" في الامتحانات في كثير من الجامعات حول العالم، لا سيما مع تقدم التكنولوجيا وسبل البحث عن المعلومات على الإنترنت، ويبقي تطبيقه محدودا في المدارس الثانوية في الولايات المتحدة الأميركية على سبيل المثال، فهل تسبق مصر دول العالم المتقدم بتطبيقه على امتحاناتها في المدارس؟
فخلال امتحانات نصف العام الدراسي، أدى نحو 700 ألف طالب في الصف الأول الثانوي الامتحانات بنظام "الكتاب المفتوح" من 13 إلى 24 يناير/كانون الثاني الجاري، حيث يسمح النظام للطالب باصطحاب الكتاب معه خلال الامتحان.
خطوة تجريبية
يقول وزير التربية والتعليم المصري طارق شوقي إنه يخطط لإحداث طفرة في التعليم، فهذه هي المرة الأولى التي يجري فيها تطبيق نظام الكتاب المفتوح في امتحانات المدارس، وشرح الوزير أن الهدف ليس نقل الإجابة من الكتاب إلى الورقة، بل المراد ألا يرهق الطالب نفسه بحفظ معادلات رياضية صماء أو مسميات متعددة.
وأضاف الوزير على صفحته على موقع فيسبوك أن "الأسئلة تركز على قياس الفهم ولن تكون إجابتها في الكتاب مباشرة، ومحاولة كتابة "براشيم" في الكتاب هي الثقافة القديمة البعيدة عن التعلم، التي تعتبر الامتحان هو محاولة للحصول على درجة لا تعبر عن الفهم وهو ما نريد تغييره".
ورغم أن الوزير أكد أن هذه الامتحانات مجرد مرحلة تجريبية، وأنها ستكون بلا درجات، فإنه أكد أيضا أن هذه التدريبات مصممة لإعطاء أكثر من فرصة للطلاب للانتقال إلى "ثقافة الفهم المؤدي إلى الدرجات وليس الحفظ أو النقش أو الغش".
أموال ضائعة
بالنسبة للطالبة نور التي خاضت امتحان "الكتاب المفتوح" لأول مرة في امتحانات الصف الأول الثانوي، كانت التجربة سيئة للغاية، وتساوي بين الطالب المجتهد الذي يذاكر بجد منذ اليوم الأول في العام الدراسي، والطالب الذي يذاكر ليلة الامتحان.
وأضافت نور - في حديثها للجزيرة نت - أن أسئلة امتحان اللغة العربية كانت غير مباشرة، ولم يصلح معها وجود الكتاب، وكانت جزئيات الأسئلة كثيرة وتتطلب وقتا طويلا للإجابة عنها، ثم جرى تسريب باقي الامتحانات عبر مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي، وهو ما تراه "متعمدا كي ينجح كل الطلبة ويشيدون بالنظام الجديد والتجربة التي اقترحها الوزير"، على حد قولها.
وتؤكد نور أن المنظومة التعليمية فاشلة، فالامتحانات تسربت ولم تقدر جهود الطلبة أو الأموال التي دفعها الأهالي في الدروس الخصوصية منذ أغسطس/آب الماضي.
مؤيد ومعارض
أثار النظام الجديد جدلا بين أولياء الأمور والمعلمين، بين مؤيد لتقديم أنظمة تعليمية غربية تجنب الطالب الحفظ والتلقين، أو معارض لنظام يساوي بين الطلاب جميعا ولا يشجعهم على الاستذكار.
يرى وائل، مدرس الفلسفة بالمرحلة الثانوية، أن التجربة جيدة ويتمنى تعميمها على المرحلة الإعدادية، فالنظام الجديد يدرب الطالب على أنظمة الامتحانات في بعض الجامعات، كما أن الحياة العملية تعتمد على البحث والاستعانة بالكتب والمراجع.
وأضاف في حديثه للجزيرة نت أن نظام الكتاب المفتوح سيوفر تكاليف الكتب، حيث يعتمد الطلبة لاحقا على استخدام "التابلت" لجمع المعلومات والبحث على الإنترنت.
بينما تعلق إيمان -من أولياء الأمور- أن نظام الكتاب المفتوح بحاجة لدراسته جيدا قبل تطبيقه، ولابد أن تدرب وزارة التربية والتعليم المعلمين أولا على هذا النظام، ثم تنظم لقاءات بين المسؤولين وأولياء الأمور والطلبة لمناقشته قبل العمل به، وليس تطبيقه فجأة.
لكن لماذا اختار الوزير أن يبدأ تطبيق الكتاب المفتوح على طلاب الصف الأول الثانوي دون غيرهم؟ هكذا يتساءل محمد السيد مدرس رياضيات للمرحلة الثانوية، ويؤكد أن المفترض أن يبدأ تطبيقه منذ الصف الأول الابتدائي، ومن الصعب تطبيقه على طلاب الأول الثانوي الذين اعتادوا نظاما معينا للامتحانات طوال السنوات التسع الماضية.
وأضاف السيد للجزيرة نت أن هذا النظام معمول به في كثير من الجامعات، لكن طلبة المدارس لا يعرفونه، كما جاءت أغلب الأسئلة غير مباشرة، ولم يكن وجود الكتب مفيدا خلال الامتحانات، ورأى الطلبة يقلبون صفحات الكتب بحثا عن الإجابات خلال إشرافه على اللجان. وحرص السيد على طمأنة الطلبة خلال الامتحان أنه مجرد تجربة، ولن يرسب أحد، ولا داعي للقلق، المهم هو الاستفادة من التجربة.
وترى شيماء، معلمة بالمرحلة الثانوية، أن تسريب الامتحانات أضر بتطبيق النظام، فكتب الطلبة الإجابات في الكتب، ودخلوا الامتحانات بالكتب ونسخوا الإجابات مما كتبوه دون تفكير. وأكدت في حديثها للجزيرة نت أن النظام الجديد يضر بالمتفوقين، ويشجعهم على التوقف عن الاستذكار مستقبلا. وأضافت أن نظام الامتحانات السابق أفضل كثيرا، ويمكن إجراء بعض التعديلات الطفيفة عليه، وليس استبداله كله.

The “open book” system in exams has become prevalent in many universities around the world, especially with the advancement of technology and internet search engines. Yet its application remains limited at the high school level as is the case, for example, in the United States. So has Egypt preceded developed nations in implementing this system in its high school examinations?
During mid-year exams, around 700,000 high school freshmen took tests using the open-book system from January 13-24 wherein they were allowed to have access to their books throughout the examination.
A Trial Run
Egyptian Minister of Education Tarek Shawki says he plans to bring about a major leap in education with this being the first time an open-book system has been used in exams. He has made clear that the purpose is not to copy answers from the book onto the paper, but rather avoid overburdening students with the rote memorization of math equations or a multitude of terms.
On his Facebook page, the Minister elaborated: “Questions will focus on measuring understanding and answers will not be found easily in the book. Efforts to write out ‘cheat sheets’ inside the book are part of an outdated culture that fails to facilitate learning. It considers the exam as an attempt to obtain a certain grade that does not reflect comprehension. This is what we want to change.”
Although the Minister affirmed that these exams are merely a trial run and would not be graded, he also stressed that they are designed to give students more opportunities to prepare to move toward “a culture of understanding that leads to grades and not one of rote memorization or cheating.”
Money Down the Drain
For Nour, a student who took the open-book test for the first time during freshman exams, the experience was very negative. In her view, it gave an equal chance to hardworking students who had been preparing diligently from day one of the academic year and those who reviewed everything on the night of the exam.
In an interview with Aljazeera.net, Nour said the questions on the Arabic Language exam were obtuse and having the book with her did not help. She added that there were many parts to the questions, which took a long time to answer. Afterwards, there was a leak of the rest of the exams on social media sites, which she described as “a deliberate attempt to allow all students to succeed so that they would praise the new trial system proposed by the Minister.”
Nour asserted that the education system is a failure. With the leaking of exams, students’ hard work went to waste as did the money invested by parents in private lessons since last August.
Supporters and Opponents
The new system has stirred debate among parents and teachers. Supporters are in favor of introducing Western educational systems that discourage the student from rote memorization while opponents criticize them for homogenizing the performance of all students on exams and not encouraging them to commit things to memory.
Wa’el, a high school philosophy teacher, sees the trial run in a positive light and hopes to see it implemented at the middle school level. The new system would familiarize students with the open-book examinations they may encounter at some universities as well as prepare them for the working world where making use of books and references for research is essential.
In an interview with Aljazeera.net, Wa’el said that this system would save on the cost of books since students will rely on the use of tablets in the future for collecting information and doing research on the Internet.
Meanwhile, Iman, a parent of one of the students, says the open-book system needs to be studied thoroughly prior to its adoption. She believes the Ministry of Education must first train teachers on how the system works, then organize meetings between officials, parents, and students to discuss its implementation beforehand, rather than moving forward abruptly without consultation.
Yet why did the Minister choose to begin piloting the open-book system exclusively with high school freshmen? This is the question Mohammad El-Sayed, a high school math teacher, asks himself. He says the system should be implemented starting from the first grade since high school freshmen will find it difficult to adjust after having become accustomed to a particular type of examination over the preceding nine years.
El-Sayed told Aljazeera.net that this system is already in effect in many universities, but students in K-12 schools are not familiar with it. This was seen in the fact that they perceived most of the questions as indirect and did not find having books with them to be useful in the exams. While supervising the examination commissions, El-Sayed witnessed students flipping through their books in search of the answers. During the test, he took care to reassure students that it was just a trial run and no one would fail. He told them there was no need to worry and that the important thing was to benefit from the experience.
According to Shaima, a high school teacher, the leaking of exams marred the implementation of the open-book system. Students wrote the answers in their books, brought them to the exams, and copied the answers from what they had written without thinking. In her interview with Aljazeera.net, she said the new system hurts outstanding students by disincentivizing them from memorizing information in the future. She added that the previous system of examinations was much better and advocated making a few slight modifications to it, rather than replacing it altogether.
