Every time I see an ad for a newer version of Trados or SDLX for instance, I think twice before bying it. I have Trados 6.5 Freelance version and I still don't know if I should upgrade it to Trados 7. I have SDLX Lite and haven't taken the step forward in buying the full version. It works fine with the versions I have, so why change?

I think it is always worth the investment to buy one of the main CAT tools. If the developers upgrade them, it's not just to get more money, I should hope! They probably present more features to make our life easier.

Yes, it's certainly worth the investment. Today, many jobs can only be done if one works with a CAT-tool. Many outsourcers insist on using Trados, Central European outsourcers often want Transit and if you want to accept work from SDL ypu'll need SDLX for a vast number of jobs.
I keep track of upgrades because in the end that seems to be less expensive than "skipping" a few, but sometimes those upgrades drive me mad. Apart from the three mentioned above, I've to work with three different "in-company" programs. It sometimes makes a translator's life easier, at other times it's more like living in hell. But why should we complain? When we were young, we also had the option to learn a "decent trade", didn't we?  ▲ Collapse

Any CAT is worth having for jobs with tables and changing formats and layouts.
If you want to work for agencies, you must have Trados just to get jobs, and you will have to upgrade from time to time, even if Trados is by far not worth its price.
However, you may get some of the "Trados agencies" to accept files and TMs made with Wordfast (with similar capabilities, but much cheaper, user friendlier, and easier to learn).

I have both, but only use Trados if specifically requested by the client (so it will take a lot of time to recover the investment).
Since I am not a good typist, I also use Dragon to dictate.
For certain large jobs without many special layouts, I use Dragon without a CAT (all CATs are based on the assumption that you always must translate sentence by sentence, which is not the best method for certain texts). If a TM or Termbase is needed for future reference, it can be easily created afterwards. ▲ Collapse
