On the technical aspect of some polls Sep 20, 2005

Hello all!

Yesterday's poll on the best sources of clients and today's one, on the main reasons of attending powwows, have many options, therefore it would have been really good if we had a possibility of multiple choices.

I think that when a poll consists of many options (over 5 or 6), multiple choice should be enabled. It would make a poll more representative.

What do you think?

Regards,

Diana

For instance, in the current powwow poll I would have liked to tick both "networking" and "social reasons" (and perhaps also "Picking up translation / business techniques").

Your answer should tell "the main reason". You can have many reasons, but I suppose one is "the main". Most of the polls I answered (not only here on proz, but all kinds of polls) required that one should choose only one option. This is how polls are usually done, and this is why they are "representative", because if you have more choices, you would be tempted to check almost all options, and then there wouldn't be a significant difference between the results.
This is how I see things.
This poll is well conceived, in my opinion. I too have more than one reason for attending powwows (I attended 2 in one year, since I've been a member - one was in my own town, and one in another town), but I know what my "main reason" is - socializing.
It shouldn't be hard for you to decide and tick "your main".

many reasons, one choice... Sep 20, 2005

Yes, multiple choice would be be better for a Q like this, but given the restrictions, I said "main" reason.

I like the social and network aspect of meeting, that is why I have attended the them. You can never give away too many business cards!

On the other hand, I remember meeting one particular translator at the pow-wows who basically wanted to suck me dry and take my client list! Now that is taking networking too far!

Indeed, I've met some translator

Indeed, I've met some translators at the Dublin pow-wows who were not interested in networking at all, they just wanted to meet up for a pint as if it were a Friday "after-work" office night out. We've had a few people attend who were interested in translation and wanted to learn about getting started etc.

Actually, with that in mind, I'm surprised the figure for "picking up translation/business tips" is still quite low at the moment ....

Let's agree to disagree. What I can say for sure is that I definitely wouldn't be tempted to check almost all options. But what if I have two reasons - which happen to be the same as Steffen's in this particular case - and they are of equal importance, 50:50, so to say? Do you think it's impossible?

The same held true for yesterday's poll. Would have liked to check two options - 'Word of mouth' and 'ProZ' - which were equally important for me, but could check only one, and that was actually half of the picture.

Regards,

Diana

Hello Orla
The mind boggles as to what the "other reasons" could be!! Bet you didn't reckon with a philosophical discussion about the merits of multiple choice either...so who was trying to suck you dry in Dublin, or did I not manage to hide my ill intentions?!? have you revived the Dublin powwows then?

Wrong question? Sep 20, 2005

Seeing the results of this one, perhaps we need a poll, "What is your main reason for not attending powwows?"

Indeed... It is rather sad... but I suppose people have their reasons for not attending, too.
