I don’t have just one area of expertise as I started out some 40 years ago as a generalist translator and slowly but surely over the years I left some areas I wasn’t comfortable with and gained experience in others, sometimes through self-teaching and area-specific training. I would love knowing more about medicine, but I don’t believe in magic only in hard work and a desire to learn...

I'm happy with my areas of expertise, as I have worked 20 years in-house in the professions, and as a translator as well. After all these years, my areas of expertise include things like "no student papers", "no Chinese or Indian clients", "no clients with less than 4.6 points in the Blue Board", "no jobs in areas I consider boring", "no jobs in areas I don't specialize in", and several other "nos" in addition to the actual areas of expertise, which I would not suppress either.

Sometimes I think I should have gone into legal translation, for the money. But my soul would have shrivelled up doing that. As it is I do stuff that I find interesting, which nurtures my soul, and that's much more important than the money.
