Bio

As I have been a self-employed service provider for many years, I do not maintain a CV. Thank you for your understanding.

Without exception, Paul Jackson’s translations are characterised by register accuracy, linguistic and terminological precision and stylistic confidence. Mr Jackson works thoroughly and quickly, and always delivers by the agreed deadlines. We treasure Mr Jackson’s regular cooperation on our projects enormously and therefore recommend him unreservedly.”

After eight years during which I predominantly lived from German–English translation, it has become clear to me where the industry is heading, and also that the industry already seems to have more or less arrived there. It’s now therefore time to return to the roots and focus once more on my previous career: graphic design and web design, in particular in the music industry.

However, I still love translating, and don’t intend to give it up entirely. I’d therefore be pleased to translate suitable projects for you. I‘ve made a small website for my translation activities, but as the market for German to English translations comprises people whose mother tongue is German, it’s only available in German: https://pauljackson-uebersetzungen.de

Why me, exactly?

  • Many years’ professional experience. First paid translation project 2004, regular translation projects from 2006, main occupation 2013 to 2020. More than 4,000 translation jobs successfully completed, of which more than 3,000 for just one client, a translation agency.
  • Main specialism: My ‘specialism among all specialisms’: the music industry. Music is my greatest passion, and I have been working in the industry for decades – today as a German to English translator, but also in the graphics field (graphic design, layout, preparation for print).
  • Specialist areas IT/technology/industry and marketing. Manuals, instructions, reports, data sheets and risk analyses etc in the areas IT, technology and industry. Websites, brochures and press releases etc in the marketing field. Knowledge of, and practical experience with, websites and SEO.
  • More information. Whether precise technical language for manuals, or more free-flowing, appealing text for sales and marketing purposes: I deploy words very carefully, and have a good feel for nuance, meaning that native speakers of English won’t recognise my work as being translations. (Which sounds obvious, but…)
  • Computer pro. Mac expert with 25+ years’ experience. (No Windows, no Microsoft, and therefore no software which only runs on Windows.)
  • CAT tools. CafeTran, which is theoretically able to import/export to/from Trados, MemoQ, Wordfast and other popular tools, albeit sometimes in a roundabout way. Also MemoQ in a web browser for the agency mentioned above (runs on their own server).
  • Other software knowledge relevant for the industry. Pages/Numbers/Keynote and LibreOffice (all to a great extent compatible with Microsoft Office). Latest versions of InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Acrobat always installed. BBEdit (text editor for HTML and XML etc). OCR tools. And of course, experience of a great deal of software that has nothing at all to do with translation.
  • Your ideal partner for German–English translations. Hardworking, focused and motivated perfectionist. Reliable and trustworthy. Extraordinarily keen eye for detail: I can spot a double space or ugly ‘typewriter’ quotation mark from 50 metres.
  • Educational background. Autodidact with a brain like a sponge, which effortlessly absorbs information and stores it for the long term. I’m always learning something: for the last two years or so, this has mainly been in the areas websites, marketing and (online) business; recently joined by relational databases.
  • Outstanding references. Available if required.
