Here, we look at how the “old Céline” alumnus has turned the heritage Italian luxury label into fashion’s hottest property.
How Bottega Veneta became the most hyped brand of 2019
Before Lee arrived, less that two years ago, word on the street was that Kering-owned Italian leather goods brand Bottega Veneta was ready for a shake up. Under the artful (if sleepy) direction of German designer Tomas Maier, the house’s signature intrecciato woven bags were a staid feature of the luxury industry, and its clothing another understated option for the cocktail set. It lacked oomph. It lacked desirability. And it lacked youth. After almost two decades at the brand, Maier made a characteristically quiet departure in June 2018. His replacement came from left field; not an internal hire (like Gucci’s Alessandro Michele in 2015), but a gamble on the 33-year-old British designer Daniel Lee, whose time spent under Phoebe Philo at Céline was an irresistible pedigree.
As the Fashion Awards 2019 showed, that gamble has paid off. “Accessories are the heart of Bottega,” Lee continued, in conversation with Vogue backstage at the awards. Here, we discuss exactly how Lee’s “new Bottega” came into being.
