Abstract
Long term evaluation of hazelnut response to irrigation is important in areas with limited water availability.
Drought conditions are becoming common in the regions of Central Italy, such as Latium, which is the second area of hazelnut production in Italy.
The trial examined the response of adult plants of cultivars ‘Tonda Gentile Romana’, ‘Tonda di Giffoni’ and ‘Nocchione’ to different levels of irrigation over the years 2005 to 2007 in an experimental orchard established in 1992 at the Experimental farm of the University of Tuscia.
Three volumes of irrigation corresponding to the restitution of 50, 75, 100% ETc calculated from class A evaporation were applied by means of drip irrigation and compared with an unirrigated control.
Vegetative growth (trunk cross-sectional area and crown volume) and yield components were positively affected by irrigation.
The highest plant yield was obtained at the 75% ETc for all cultivars and years.
Nut and kernel weight and size were slightly greater in the irrigated treatments than in the control.
The percentage of empty and defected nuts was higher under conditions of limited water availability.
The oil content in the kernels of ‘TGR’ and ‘Nocchione’ was slightly higher in 75% and 100% ETc than in the other treatments.
In conclusion, water supply of 75% ETc could be valid irrigation levels for hazelnut cvs.
‘Tonda Gentile Romana’, ‘Tonda di Giffoni’ and ‘Nocchione’, in areas characterised by insufficient rainfall during the year.
INTRODUCTION
Hazelnut is sensitive to water stress and has a low capacity for stomatal regulation; several negative effects of water stress have been observed: decrease of photosynthetic activity; early cessation of fruit growth; early leaf fall; increase in blank nuts; decrease of percent kernel and a higher susceptibility to diseases (Girona, 1987; Natali et al., 1988; Girona et al., 1994; Tombesi, 1994; Bignami and Natali, 1996; Bignami et al., 2000; Diaz et al., 2005).
Vegetative and productive activity is affected by water availability during the growth season, with consequences on quality and quantity of production.
The complex annual cycle, characterized by the overlapping of different vegetative and reproductive processes (end of leaf area development, fruit set, kernel filling, flower bud initiation and differentiation) from June to August makes the availability of plentiful water an important factor to overcome competition.
The optimisation of water supply to hazelnut is necessary in areas with limited water availability, irregular rain distribution during the year and in young plants.
One or more of these conditions often occur in Central and Southern Italy, such as in Latium (Central Italy), which is the second largest area of hazelnut production in Italy and where drought conditions are becoming common.
Irrigation was introduced in the last two decades in hazelnut orchards of the Latium region, where drip irrigation is presently the most widely used system.
Sub-irrigation is presently also applied.
Nevertheless, an objective definition of the optimum volume of irrigation and the time of supply has not been sufficiently considered.
As a consequence the risks of water deficiency or excess and the need to save water are problems still unsolved.

tree production and growth, optimising water use.
Since hazelnut is slow to start productive activity, long term experiments are needed to give information on plant behaviour.
A trial was thus set up in 1992 in Viterbo (Central Italy) to study the response to irrigation of vegetative growth and production of hazelnut, cvs.
‘Tonda Gentile Romana’, ‘Tonda di Giffoni’ and ‘Nocchione’.
The previous observations on young plants had shown positive effects of irrigation on growth and the start of production (Bignami and Natali, 1996; Bignami et al., 2000).
The vegetative and productive behaviour in the adult stage of orchard life is discussed in this contribution.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
The observations were carried out at the experimental farm of the University of Tuscia, Viterbo, from 2005 to 2007, on an orchard in which the trees were fifteen to seventeen years old and had been supplied with different irrigation volumes since the second year from planting (1993).
The main cv. was the local ‘Tonda Gentile Romana’ (TGR), with ‘Tonda di Giffoni’ (TG) and ‘Nocchione’ (N) as pollenisers.
The plants were spaced 4 × 5 m and trained to a free vase.
Four treatments were applied: an un-irrigated control and three water levels, corresponding to the restitution of 50%, 75% and 100% ETc.
The treatments were arranged in a complete randomised block design, with two replications.
Within each plot of 24 plants the inner 8 plants were used for the experimental observations and measurements.
Water was supplied every two days by means of a drip irrigation system.
In all the treatments the irrigation started when the soil water content, determined gravimetrically, was approximately 50% of the available water.
The irrigation volume was calculated as:
ETc = ET*0.8*Kgc, where ET is the class A evaporation, 0.8 a coefficient accounting for pan position and Kgc a coefficient accounting for ground cover, that was set to 0.6 (2005, 2006) and 0.7 (2007), on the basis of the estimated ground cover.
Yield, nut traits and defective nuts, vegetative growth (trunk circumference, crown height and diameter along and across the row) were measured annually and trunk crosssectional area, crown volume and cross-sectional area, ground cover, were calculated.
Oil content in the kernel was analyzed by the Soxhlet method as reported in Cristofori et al.
(2008).
Nut quality of ‘TGR’ during storage was examined.
Shelled nuts from non-irrigated and 100% Etc treatments were stored at +10°C according to the current conditions applied in commercial storage and the free acidity (oleic acid %) analysed after three, six and ten months from shelling.
Meteorological parameters, such as temperature, rainfall and class A evaporation were also registered.
Statistical Analysis
All the collected data were processed by means of the analysis of variance, using the procedure SYSTAT MGLH (Wilkinson, 1998), considering volume of irrigation, cultivar and year as factors of variation.
Least significant difference (LSD p=0.05) for the comparison of the means was then calculated.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Climatic Conditions and Water Applied during the Experiment
The weather conditions from 2005 to 2007 are summarized in Table 1.
July was the critical month, without or with very low rainfall, the highest average value of maximum temperature and a high daily evaporative demand.
The irrigation period, which started at the beginning of June, was characterized by a higher amount of rainfall in 2006 than in the other years.
Vegetative Growth, Yield Components and Nut Quality
Vegetative growth was positively affected by irrigation.
Trunk cross-sectional area linearly increased with the level of water supply (Table 2); both crown volume and cross

sectional area increased linearly as a response to the water applied.
Crown volumes of irrigated plants were almost twice with respect to the control plants.
Water supply showed a positive effect on yield components (Fig. 1; Table 3) Yield increased as a response to water supply to 75% ETc for all cultivars and years (Fig. 1).
A similar response was observed in the previous years of the orchard (Bignami et al., 2005).
A significant interaction between year and cultivar was observed: the production increased from 2005 to 2007 for ‘Nocchione’, whereas the production of ‘TG’ and ‘TGR’ declined in 2007 with respect to 2006, suggesting a higher reactivity to environmental constraints with respect to ‘Nocchione’ (Fig. 1).
Nut and kernel weight were slightly greater in irrigated than in control plants (Table 3).
The differences of percent kernel observed among irrigation treatments were not statistically significant (Table 3), whereas the percentage of empty nuts was significantly higher in the condition of limited water availability, with a linear negative relationship among blank percentage and irrigation volume (Fig. 2).
The percentage of poorly filled kernels did not differ among treatments.
The mouldy nuts were 1.4% at the highest irrigation volume and close to 0 in the other treatments (data not shown).
Significant differences in nut size and kernel percent among cultivars were expected and were observed, according to the described nut traits of these cultivars (Tables 2, 3).
The oil content in the kernels ranged from 62 to 67%, depending on cultivar, year and the interaction between cultivar and irrigation volume (Fig. 3).
Significantly higher oil content was detected for ‘TGR’ with respect to ‘Nocchione’ and ‘TG’.
The effect of irrigation was dependent on the cultivar: a slight increase was observed in ‘TGR’ and ‘Nocchione’ as a function of water availability, whereas the oil content showed a negative relationship with the volume of irrigation in ‘TG’ (Fig. 3).
In 2006, significantly lower oil content was observed when compared to 2005 and 2007.
A higher acidity was detected after three months in shelled nuts of the untreated control (0% ETc) whereas similar values were observed after six and ten months (Fig. 4).
CONCLUSIONS
In the environmental conditions of the trial, the recorded rainfall was not sufficient to assure good growth and production of adult plants of the cultivars ‘Nocchione’, ‘TG’, ‘TGR’.
Irrigation consistently improved plant performances.
The restitution of 75% ETc assured the best growth and production of all the tested cultivars.
The irrigation strategy based on the estimation of crop evapotranspiration by means of class A evaporimeter and water balance allowed a simple management strategy and good quantitative and qualitative results when compared to rainfed conditions.

Una valutazione a lungo termine della reazione della nocciola all’irrigazione è importante nelle aree con disponibilità di acqua limitata.
Le condizioni di siccità stanno diventando comuni nelle regioni dell'Italia centrale, come il Lazio, che è la seconda area di produzione di nocciole in Italia.
L’esperimento ha esaminato la reazione delle piante adulte di cultivar 'Tonda Gentile Romana', 'Tonda di Giffoni' e 'Nocchione' a diversi livelli di irrigazione nel corso degli anni 2005-2007 in un frutteto sperimentale fondato nel 1992 presso l'azienda sperimentale della Università della Tuscia.
Tre volumi di irrigazione, che corrispondono alla restituzione di 50, 75, 100% ETc calcolato sull’evaporazione classe A, sono stati applicati mediante irrigazione a goccia e confrontati con un controllo senza irrigazione.
La crescita vegetativa (l’area trasversale del tronco e il volume della corona) e i componenti di produzione sono stati impattati positivamente dall’irrigazione.
Il più alto rendimento dell'impianto è stato ottenuto al 75% ETc per tutte le cultivar e per tutti gli anni.
Le dimensioni e il peso della nocciola e del frutto erano leggermente maggiori nei trattamenti irrigati rispetto al controllo.
La percentuale di nocciole vuote o guaste era superiore in condizioni di ridotta disponibilità idrica.
Il contenuto di olio nei frutti di 'TGR' e 'Nocchione' era leggermente superiore al 75% e 100% ETc rispetto agli altri trattamenti.
In conclusione, l'approvvigionamento idrico di 75% ETc potrebbe corrispondere ai livelli validi d’irrigazione per cultivar di nocciola.
'Tonda Gentile Romana', 'Tonda di Giffoni' e 'Nocchione', nelle aree caratterizzate da scarsa piovosità durante l'anno.
INTRODUZIONE
La nocciola è sensibile agli stress idrici e ha una bassa capacità per la regolazione stomatica; sono stati osservati alcuni effetti negativi dello stress idrico: diminuzione dell'attività fotosintetica; precoce cessazione della crescita del frutto; precoce caduta della foglia; aumento delle nocciole vuote; diminuzione della percentuale del frutto e una maggiore suscettibilità alle malattie (Girona, 1987; Natali et al., 1988; Girona et al., 1994; Tombesi, 1994; Bignami e Natali, 1996; Bignami et al., 2000; Diaz et al., 2005).
Le attività vegetativa e produttiva dipendono dalla disponibilità di acqua durante la stagione di crescita, con conseguenze sulla qualità e sulla quantità della produzione.
Il complesso ciclo annuale, caratterizzato dalla sovrapposizione di diversi processi vegetativi e riproduttivi (termine dello sviluppo dell’area fogliare, allegagione, riempimento del frutto, iniziazione e differenziazione del bocciolo) da giugno ad agosto rende la disponibilità di abbondante acqua un fattore importante per superare la concorrenza.
L'ottimizzazione dell'approvvigionamento d’acqua alla nocciola è necessaria nelle aree con disponibilità di acqua limitata, con distribuzione irregolare di pioggia durante l'anno e nelle piante giovani.
Una o più di queste condizioni si verificano spesso in centro e al Sud Italia, come nel Lazio (Italia centrale), che è la seconda più grande zona di produzione di nocciole in Italia e dove le condizioni di siccità stanno diventando comuni.
L’irrigazione è stata introdotta negli ultimi due decenni nei frutteti di nocciola della regione Lazio, dove l'irrigazione a goccia è attualmente il sistema più ampiamente usato.
La subirrigazione è un altro metodo attualmente applicato.
Tuttavia, una definizione obiettiva del volume ottimale di irrigazione e il tempo di rifornimento non sono stati sufficientemente considerati.
Di conseguenza, i rischi di eccesso o di carenza di acqua e la necessità di risparmiare acqua sono problemi ancora irrisolti.

dell’albero e la crescita, ottimizzando l'uso dell'acqua.
Poiché la nocciola è lenta ad avviare l’attività produttiva, sono necessari esperimenti a lungo termine per dare informazioni sul comportamento della pianta.
Una prova così è stata istituita nel 1992 a Viterbo (Italia centrale) per studiare la risposta all'irrigazione della crescita vegetativa e della produzione della nocciola, cultivar
'Tonda Gentile Romana', 'Tonda di Giffoni' e 'Nocchione'.
Le precedenti osservazioni sulle piante giovani avevano mostrato gli effetti positivi dell'irrigazione sulla crescita e l'inizio della produzione (Bignami e Natali, 1996; Bignami et al., 2000).
Il comportamento vegetativo e produttivo nella fase adulta della vita del frutteto viene discusso in questo contributo.
MATERIALE E METODI
Le osservazioni sono state effettuate presso l'azienda sperimentale dell'Università della Tuscia, Viterbo, dal 2005 al 2007, su un frutteto in cui gli alberi avevano tra i quindici e i diciassette anni ed erano stati forniti di differenti volumi di irrigazione fin dal secondo anno dall’impianto (1993).
Il principale cultivar era il locale 'Tonda Gentile Romana' (TGR), con 'Tonda di Giffoni' (TG) e 'Nocchione' (N) come impollinatori.
Le piante erano distanziate 4 × 5 m e preparate in vaso libero.
Sono stati applicati quattro trattamenti: un controllo non irrigato e tre livelli di acqua, corrispondenti alla restituzione del 50%, 75% e 100% ETc.
I trattamenti sono stati disposti secondo un design completo a blocco randomizzato, con due repliche.
All'interno di ogni lotto di 24 piante le 8 piante più interne sono state utilizzate per le osservazioni sperimentali e le misurazioni.
L'acqua veniva fornita ogni due giorni per mezzo di un sistema di irrigazione a goccia.
In tutti i trattamenti l'irrigazione è iniziata quando l’acqua contenuta nel terreno, determinata gravimetricamente, era circa il 50% dell'acqua disponibile.
Il volume di irrigazione è stato calcolato come:
ETc = ET * 0.8 * Kgc, dove ET è l'evaporazione di classe A, 0,8 un coefficiente che rappresenta la posizione del suolo di lavorazione e Kgc un coefficiente che rappresenta la copertura del terreno, che è stato impostato a 0,6 (2005, 2006) e 0,7 (2007), sulla base della copertura del terreno stimata.
Il rendimento: i tratti della nocciola e le nocciole guaste, la crescita vegetativa (circonferenza del tronco, altezza e diametro della corona lungo tutta la fila) sono stati misurati ogni anno e sono stati calcolati l’area della sezione trasversale del tronco, il volume della corona e la rispettiva area della sezione trasversale, la copertura del terreno.
Il contenuto di olio nel frutto è stato analizzato con il metodo Soxhlet come riferito da Cristofori et al.
(2008).
La qualità della nocciola 'TGR' è stata esaminata durante la conservazione.
Le nocciole sgusciate provenienti da superfici non irrigue e quelle dai trattamenti con 100% ETc sono state conservate a + 10 ° C secondo le attuali condizioni applicate in un deposito commerciale e l'acidità libera (% acido oleico) è stata analizzata dopo tre, sei e dieci mesi dalla sgusciatura.
Sono stati anche registrati i parametri meteorologici, quali la temperatura, le precipitazioni e l’evaporazione classe A.
Analisi statistica
Tutti i dati raccolti sono stati elaborati mediante l’analisi della varianza, utilizzando la procedura SYSTAT MGLH (Wilkinson, 1998), considerando il volume di irrigazione, la cultivar e l’anno come fattori di variazione.
È stata quindi calcolata la differenza minima significativa (LSD p = 0,05) per il confronto delle risorse.
RISULTATI E DISCUSSIONE
Condizioni climatiche e acqua applicata durante l'esperimento
Le condizioni meteo dal 2005 al 2007 sono riassunte nella tabella 1.
Luglio è stato il mese critico, senza precipitazioni o molto scarse, con il valore medio più alto della temperatura massima e con una forte domanda di evaporazione giornaliera.
Il periodo di irrigazione, che è cominciato all'inizio di giugno, è stato caratterizzato da una maggiore quantità di pioggia nel 2006 rispetto agli altri anni.
Crescita vegetativa, componenti di resa e qualità della nocciola
La crescita vegetativa è stata influenzata positivamente dall'irrigazione.
L’area della sezione trasversale del tronco e’ aumentata linearmente con il livello di approvvigionamento idrico (tabella 2); sia il volume della corona che

l’area della sezione trasversale sono aumentati linearmente in risposta all’acqua applicata.
I volumi della corona delle piante irrigate erano quasi il doppio rispetto alle piante di controllo.
Il rifornimento idrico ha mostrato un effetto positivo sulle componenti di resa (fig. 1; Tabella 3) il rendimento e’ aumentato in risposta alla fornitura di acqua al 75% ETc per tutte le cultivar e in tutti gli anni (fig. 1).
Una risposta simile è stata osservata negli anni precedenti del frutteto (Bignami et al., 2005).
È stata osservata un'interazione significativa fra anno e cultivar: la produzione è aumentata dal 2005 al 2007 per 'Nocchione', mentre la produzione di 'TG' e 'TGR' è diminuita nel 2007 rispetto al 2006, suggerendo una maggiore reattività ai vincoli dell'ambiente rispetto al 'Nocchione' (fig. 1).
Il peso della nocciola e del frutto erano leggermente superiori nelle piante irrigate rispetto a quelle di controllo (tabella 3).
Le differenze del frutto in percentuale osservato fra i trattamenti di irrigazione non erano statisticamente significative (tabella 3), mentre la percentuale delle nocciole vuote era significativamente più alta nella condizione di disponibilità idriche limitate, con un rapporto lineare negativo tra il volume di irrigazione e la percentuale di vuoto (fig. 2).
La percentuale dei frutti scarsamente riempiti non ha differito fra i trattamenti.
Le nocciole ammuffite erano 1,4% nel più alto volume di irrigazione e vicino allo 0 negli altri trattamenti (dati non mostrati).
Differenze significative nelle dimensioni della nocciola e nella percentuale del frutto tra cultivar sono state previste e sono state osservate, secondo i tratti della nocciola descritti di queste cultivar (tabelle 2, 3).
Il contenuto di olio nei frutti ha variato tra il 62 e il 67%, a seconda della cultivar, dell’anno e dell'interazione tra cultivar e volume dell’irrigazione (fig. 3).
Significativamente più alto è stato rilevato il contenuto di olio per 'TGR' rispetto a 'Nocchione' e 'TG'.
L'effetto di irrigazione dipendeva dalla cultivar: un leggero aumento è stato osservato in 'TGR' e 'Nocchione' in funzione della disponibilità di acqua, mentre il contenuto di olio ha mostrato una relazione negativa con il volume di irrigazione in 'TG' (fig. 3).
Nel 2006, il contenuto di olio è stato osservato significativamente più basso rispetto al 2005 e 2007.
E’ stata rilevata una maggiore acidità dopo tre mesi in nocciole sgusciate del controllo non trattato (0% ETc) mentre valori simili sono stati osservati dopo sei e dieci mesi (fig. 4).
CONCLUSIONI
Nelle condizioni ambientali della prova, le precipitazioni registrate non erano sufficienti per assicurare la buona crescita e produzione di piante adulte delle cultivar 'Nocchione', 'TG', 'TGR'.
L’irrigazione ha sistematicamente migliorato le prestazioni della pianta .
La restituzione del 75% ETc ha assicurato la migliore crescita e produzione di tutte le cultivar testate.
La strategia dell’irrigazione basata sulla stima dell'evapotraspirazione della coltura per mezzo dell’equilibrio dell’acqua ed evaporimetro classe A, ha permesso una semplice strategia di gestione e buoni risultati quantitativi e qualitativi rispetto alle condizioni di non irrigazione.

I come from Central Italy, I am a specialized translator in legal and administrative field. I belong to the translator team of CGC Translation Services (Translation Agency in Buenos Aires).
I have been worked for several years within an italian NGO for the projects management with argentinian NGOs.
I handled human resource management, administrative aspects of the projects and translated texts and acts. (ESP-ITA, ITA-ESP)
Beyond this, I have been translated, also, for private customers since I finished my Master degree. In this case I translated agriculture and medicine field, too. (ENG-ITA)
Concluding, I want to express my feeling about my job. I think that communication and relation among human beings by means of the word is the first great goal and departure of our lives. We have been given this gift and the possibility to communicate reducing the distances all over the world by translating, is much more important. This is my job.
