Translation - English According to various research studies conducted in the USA, an increased loneliness can lead to a number of serious health effects:
• Negative Health Effect #1: Reduced Physical and Mental Health. Elderly persons who feel lonely and isolated are more likely to report poor physical and/or mental health as well. (National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project);
• Negative Health Effect #2: Increased Risk of Mortality. Both social isolation and loneliness can be associated with a higher risk of mortality in adults aged 52 and older. (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences);
• Negative Health Effect #3: Increased Risk of Cognitive Decline and Dementia. As a mental condition, loneliness causes several negative effects on mental health. For elderly persons, these effects are most starkly seen as cognitive decline and the onset of various forms of dementia. (Dr. John Cacioppo, a distinguished neuroscientist and psychologist at the University of Chicago);
• Negative Health Effect #4: Increased Risk of Depression. No matter the demographic group, loneliness is always associated with negative feelings including, but not limited to, sadness, pain, numbness, and low self-worth. As it turns out, feeling loneliness is associated closely with symptoms of depression in adults and elderly people;
• Negative Health Effect #5: Increased Risk of High Blood Pressure and Long-Term Illness. Another study showed a direct connection between loneliness among elderly persons and a rise in systolic blood pressure within a 4-year period (Psychology and Aging).

Source text - Polish Mniej niż ¼ badanych wskazała kontakt z innymi osobami (spotkania towarzyskie czy z bliską osobą) jako jeden z najczęstszych powodów wyjścia z domu. ¼ respondentów wychodzi na spotkania towarzyskie bardzo sporadycznie – raz na pół roku lub rzadziej, zaś 3 na 10 osób w wieku 80+ w ogóle nie wychodzi na tego typu spotkania. Dlatego w tej grupie społecznej niezwykle ważny jest choćby kontakt telefoniczny z innymi osobami – 1 na 3 badanych powyżej 80 roku życia ma codzienny kontakt telefoniczny z osobami ze swojego otoczenia.
Wiele osób po 80. czy 90. roku życia nie ma już ani rodziny, ani przyjaciół. Skazani na samotność tracą sens życia. Nie wychodzą z domu, nie mają z kim porozmawiać, ani do kogo zadzwonić. Dopada ich apatia, brak apetytu oraz strach przed jutrzejszym dniem.
Ta sytuacja diametralnie się zmienia, kiedy w życiu starszego człowieka pojawia się przyjazna i troskliwa osoba, która z uwagą potrafi go wysłuchać, przynajmniej raz w tygodniu go odwiedza oraz systematycznie dzwoni, żeby spytać jak się czuje i jak minął dzień. Tą przyjazną duszą jest nasz wolontariusz – mówi Joanna Mielczarek, dyrektor Stowarzyszenia.
Translation - English Less than ¼ of the respondents indicates meetings with other people (social meeting or meetings with close ones) as one of the most common reasons for leaving home. About ¼ of the respondents joins social meeting very rarely – once a half year or even less often, and every 3 in 10 in age 80+ do not join such meetings at all. That is why in this age group an indirect contact (as via phone call) is especially important – 1 in 3 persons over 80 years of age is in daily contact with people from their surroundings via phone.
“Many people above 80 or 90 years of age have neither a family nor friends. Sentenced to loneliness, they lose meaning of life. They never leave their homes, they have no one to talk to or to call on the phone. They are caught in apathy, they lose appetite, and they are afraid of days to come.
This situation changes entirely once a friendly and caring person appears in an elderly person’s life. Someone who listens carefully to what they have to say, visits them at least once a week and calls them regularly to ask how they are and how was their day. This friendly soul is our volunteer,” says Joanna Mielczarek, Executive Director of Stowarzyszenie mali bracia Ubogich.
