Kinder und Jugendliche rufen zur größten Aufforstung in der Geschichte der Menschheit auf
Eine neue Studie der Universität Yale belegt, dass pro Jahr 9,5 Milliarden Bäume durch Abholzung verloren gehen und das trotz der bedeutenden Aufforstungsbemühungen der Billion Tree Campaign, die in den vergangenen acht Jahren 14,2 Milliarden Bäume gepflanzt hat.
Diese Studie, die von Plant-for-the-Planet initiiert und am 2. September 2015 im Wissenschaftsjournal Nature veröffentlicht wurde, ergab auch, dass es auf der Erde 3,04 Billionen Bäume gibt. Das sind ca. 7,5-mal mehr als bisher angenommen. Allerdings hat sich die Gesamtzahl der Bäume um 45,8% reduziert seit die Menschen damit begonnen haben, die Erde zu besiedeln.
“Diese Studie legt dar, dass wir die größte Aufforstungsanstrengungen in der Geschichte der Menschheit unternehmen müssen“, so Paulina Sanchez Espinosa (21), Präsidentin von Plant-for-the-Planet aus Mexico.“ Jeder Baum bindet 10 kg CO₂ pro Jahr. Dadurch wird Aufforstung zur günstigsten, am einfachsten umzusetzenden und einzigen weltweit skalierbaren Methode zur CO₂ Abscheidung und Speicherung.“
Eine weitere Billion (1.000 Milliarden) Bäume würde 1/4 der jährlich anfallenden menschgemachten CO₂ Emissionen, derzeit 36 Milliarden Tonnen, sequestrieren. Die Kinder und Jugendlichen von Plant-for-the-Planet rufen daher vermögende Personen und Unternehmen, Regierungschefs und alle Bürger dazu auf, sich an der Billion Tree Campaign zu beteiligen:
“Eintausend multinationale Unternehmen und Milliardäre, die jeweils eine Milliarde Bäume pflanzen, wären schon genug, um unser Ziel von 1.000 Milliarden Bäumen bis 2020 zu erreichen,” so Felix Finkbeiner (17), Gründer von Plant-for-the-Planet aus Deutschland.
Die Studie liefert zum ersten Mal wissenschaftliche belegte Zahlen über die Anzahl der Bäume. “Bäume gehören zu den bedeutendsten und wichtigsten Lebensformen auf der Erde, aber wir haben gerade erst angefangen, ihre weltweite Ausdehnung und Verteilung zu verstehen”, sagte Thomas Crowther, wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Forstfakultät der Universität Yale (F&ES) und Hauptautor der Studie.

Children and young people call for the largest afforestation effort in the history of mankind
A new study from Yale University states that 9.5 billion trees are lost through deforestation each year, despite the significant afforestation efforts of the Billion Tree Campaign, which has planted 14.2 billion trees over the past eight years.
This study, which was initiated by Plant-for-the-Planet and published on 2 September 2015 in the science journal Nature, also revealed that there are 3.04 trillion trees on earth. That is approximately 7.5 times more than previously thought. However, the total number of trees has reduced by 45.8% since humans began to settle the earth.
“This study demonstrates that we need the biggest push for afforestation in the history of mankind,” says Paulina Sanchez Espinosa (21), president of Plant-for-the-Planet from Mexico. “Each tree absorbs 10 kg CO₂ per year. Thus afforestation becomes the most economical, easiest to implement and only globally scalable method of carbon capture and storage.”
A further trillion (1,000 billion) trees would sequester ¼ of CO₂ emissions produced by people every year; currently 36 billion metric tons. The children and young people of Plant-for-the-Planet therefore call on wealthy people and companies, heads of the government and all citizens to take part in the Billion Tree Campaign:
“If one thousand multinational companies and billionaires planted one billion trees each, that would already be enough to achieve our goal of one trillion trees by 2020,” says Felix Finkbeiner (17), founder of Plant-for-the-Planet from Germany.
For the first time, the study supplies scientifically proven figures about the number of trees. “Trees are among the most prominent and critical organisms on earth, yet we are only recently beginning to comprehend their global extent and distribution,” said Thomas Crowther, research fellow at Yale University's Forestry & Environmental Studies faculty (F&ES) and lead author of the study.
