Source text - French Si lourdes les montagnes et si perdues d'aspect, entrelaçant les friches et les bois, si petit, si indistinct le bout de village enfantin qu'on dirait une illusion. On est dans le loin. On aura beau avancer se dit-on, on n'ira pas au-delà. Le village là-bas, quelque effort qu'on fasse, on se demande si on l'atteindra jamais. Quel chemin prendre, d'ailleurs, pour franchir tant de vide ? Par où passerait-il ? On n'aperçoit que des courbes où pénètre le ciel comme une mer, des reliefs qu'il a écrasés, et qui s'allongent, s'étalent, s'enfoncent dans des trous sans fond. La montagne ne s'élève pas, elle s'abaisse, se rétracte, et l'on sent la poussée, la présence invisible et tyrannique de l'espace. Si ces minuscules maisons semblent reculées, c'est qu'elles constituent l'axe d'un paysage où tout ne cesse de régresser dans l'immobilité. Lorsqu'on y sera, on se demandera encore si on est bien dans ce qu'on a vu, si on a pas aperçu un mirage, un village fantôme ; mais la montagne passant la gueule entre tous les murs, ou l'horizon, plus grand qu'ailleurs, où se déversent et se vident les maisons les chemins et les prés, rappelleront à chaque instant qu'on y est : loin.
Déjà le jour faiblit, de grands pans de terre baignent dans l'ombre. Deux ou trois points lumineux se sont allumés parmi les maisons, vacillants, si fragiles qu'ils se réduisent presque à des signes, réabsorbés de temps à autre par le noir, pour en ressortir tout de même. C'est à eux que doivent ressembler ces lueurs aperçues dans la forêt par les héros des contes, et qui les perdent. À les voir, on sent déjà le froid plus vif, le vent roulant deux feuilles dans les venelles noires, le passage d'un chien silencieux, le souffle d'une bête à corne invisible et puis, s'avançant au ras de végétations indistinctes, humide et chargé d'odeurs lourdes, le mufle de la nuit.
Difficile d'estimer à quelle distance se trouve le lieu que désignent les lumières, les obstacles qui en séparent, si cet emplacement qu'elles s'efforcent si faiblement de marquer encore un peu l'idée de lieu, en dépit de tout, alors que tout l'espace est occupé par les longs mouvements de l'obscurité qui se déploie, théâtralement, en vastes plissements.
À nouveau, comme si on ne devait jamais en finir, descendre entre les hauts sapins noirs, à nouveau remonter en lacets qui mènent la voiture tantôt ici, tantôt là, nez vers la roche, nez vers le vide. Les incessants changements d'orientation modifient les perspectives et les paysages, et la route a l'air de ne jamais décider dans quel pays elle va, au fond des forêts, dans les hauts pâturages ou sur le rebord des plateaux. On n'a pas seulement abandonné la ligne droite, mais encore la logique même de l'orientation. La route se transforme doucement en lieu. Les virages ne sont plus des détours, ils valent pour eux-mêmes.

Ces visages que le froid colorie violemment, sous les casquettes, beaucoup ont été sculptés par l'alcool, ces corps fabriqués par lui ou démembrés par lui. L'alcool préside aux besognes du fer, de la pierre, du bois, de la corne. Il tuméfie les faces, cogne les épouses, ruine les exploitations, déforme les membres, ourdit les accidents. Lui, et lui seul. Ceux qui lui ont vendu leur âme ne sont plus que l'alcool, le corps provisoire et titubant de l'alcool. Il travaille au lent retour vers la confusion des formes, vers les créatures du chaos, il fabrique des succédanés de titans.
On parcourt le territoire d'une mauvaise plaisanterie mythologique, la parodie grinçante des puissances originelles. Cet attelage impressionnant que vous avez croisé sur la route était mené par Jupiter en personne, torse nu, maîtrisant avec facilité la puissance du monstre grondant qui tire son char, on reconnaît sa barbe, sa musculature et son regard étincelant. Derrière lui, juché sur l'amoncellement de barres odorantes qui brillent au soleil, massif et brut, Vulcain vous considère. Plus tard, on trouvera Vulcain trébuchant, la parole empâtée, un peu d'écume sèche au coin des lèvres.
Rares sont les maisons où l'alcool n'a pas ses victimes, ses esclaves. Il y a ceux qu'il a ruinés, ceux qu'il a mutilé. Les couples défaits, les fortunes dispersées, les professions abandonnées. Ce jeune homme de trente ans, intelligent, doué, et qui a dû être assez beau ne conduit plus sans embarquer son petit fût de mauvais vin dans la voiture : le voici métamorphosé en polichinelle bouffi et violacé, comme s'il portait un masque monstrueux, ou qu'un démon facétieux lui avait soufflé les vapeurs éthyliques à l'intérieur de la peau. Il y a perdu son métier et se retrouve cantonnier.
L'alcool est entré dans le sang, il engendre, il fait partie de la famille, on reconnaît ses traits dans le visage des enfants. Il prescrit les destins, on se conforme à ses impératifs, avec fatalisme, sans en retirer de plaisir ni d'oubli véritable. Il s'agit d'autre chose avec l'alcool.
Nulle grandeur d'ailleurs, nulle tragédie dans cet acharnement. Les histoires d'alcool appartiennent au registre comique. C'est pourquoi il est difficile d'en dire du mal. Les plaisirs qu'il donne sont de toute espèces, parfois subtils, parfois brutaux. Il réchauffe, il aide à parler, anime les conversations, leur donne une matière, crée des complicités, solennise les transactions, dénoue la méfiance, soutient la vie sociale. Il marque tous les moments de la vie, tout ce qui assure l'être humain dans son humanité et l'homme dans sa virilité. C'est un petit dieu rieur et familier.
Les hommes seuls lui rendent un culte. Aucune femme ne boit jamais, ici, ou presque, à part certaines petites filles ou quelques vieilles isolées dans leurs villages morts. La plupart, prétextant n'en pas avoir le goût, refuseront obstinément le verre de vin, de muscat ou de porto que l'on propose avec insistance. À l'heure rituelle de l'apéritif, où les hommes se réunissent autour de la table, elles ne s'assiéront même pas, soit qu'elles servent, soit qu'elles vaquent à d'autres occupations. Cela fait partie d'une forme persistance de distinction des sexes. Chacun son type de travail et son lieu.
Translation - English So heavy are the mountains, so lost from view, snaking through the wastelands and woods; the edge of the typically quaint village is so small, so indistinct, one would think it to be an illusion. We are in the far distance. We can’t help but think that however much we progress, we will never arrive. We ask ourselves if we will ever reach the village over there, regardless of the effort we expend. In fact, which path should we take to make our way through such a void? Which way should we go? All we can see are the curves where the sky penetrates like a sea, the landforms it squashes, which extend, spread and dig into bottomless pits. The mountain doesn’t rise, it lowers itself, retracts, and we feel the push, the invisible and tyrannical presence of space. If these miniature houses seem far away, it is because they form the axis of a landscape where nothing ceases to regress into stillness. When we get there, we will still wonder if we are in the place we saw, whether it wasn’t a mirage, a phantom village; but the mountain poking its head in between every wall, the horizon, bigger than elsewhere, the houses, the paths and the fields all spill out and empty, reminding us at each moment of the day that we are in fact there: far.
Already daylight was fading and large tracts of land lay in the shadows. Two or three lights were on in the houses, vacillating, fragile, reduced almost to signals, reabsorbed every now and then by blackness, only to finally come out the other side. They must resemble the lights fairy tale heroes see in forests, the ones which make them lose their way. Just by seeing them, we felt the cold more intensely, the wind blowing a couple of leaves in a dark alleyway, a dog going past silently, the breath of an invisible horned animal and then, arriving at the edge of the indistinct vegetation, humid and laden with a heavy scent, the muzzle of the night.
It was difficult to estimate how far away the place with these lights was, what obstacles stood in the way, this village the lights were trying so meekly to denote as an idea of a place, in spite of everything, when all the space was occupied by long strokes of darkness spreading, theatrically, into large folds.
Once again, as if we would never see the end, we descend through tall, dark, fir trees only to zigzag upwards again, taking the car this way then that, its front facing a rock face, then emptiness. The endless changes in orientation modified our perspectives and the landscape, the road never quite sure which country it was leading to, either into the depth of forests, on to high pastures or to the edge of plateaux. Not only had we given up on straight lines, we also gave up on the very logic of orientation. Slowly though, the road became less erratic. No longer endless detours, each turn gaining more purpose.

Hidden beneath caps, many of the faces coloured violently by the cold had been sculpted by alcohol, their bodies either built up or dismembered by it. Alcohol is the tyrant behind all work relating to iron, stone, wood and horns. It swells faces, strikes wives, ruins farms, deforms limbs and devises accidents. It, and only it. Those who sell their souls to it, in themselves are nothing more than alcohol, its fleeting, staggering vessels. It works its way slowly back to the confusion of forms, to the creatures of chaos, it creates substitutes for titans.
We are meandering through a bad mythological joke, the grinding parody of original powers. The impressive wagon you crossed on the road was driven by Jupiter himself, with a naked chest, mastering with ease the growling beast’s power which pulls his cart along. We recognise his beard, his muscles and his iridescent eyes. Behind him, perched on a scented heap of bars which lustre in the sunlight, massive and brutal, Vulcan weighs you up. Later, we would find him stumbling, his speech slurred, with some dried foam in the corner of his mouth.
It is rare to find a home without alcohol’s victims, its slaves. There are those ruined by it, those mutilated by it. Couples undone, fortunes dispersed, professions abandoned. This young man aged thirty, intelligent, gifted, perhaps handsome once, now no longer drives without his little barrel of bad wine: now he has morphed into a puffy and purple Punch, as if he wore a monstrous mask, or as though a facetious demon had blown ethylic vapours into his skin. He lost his job and now finds himself a labourer.
Alcohol gets into the bloodstream, it breeds, it is part of the family- we recognise its traits in children’s faces. It prescribes destinies; we comply fatalistically to its requirements, deriving no real pleasure from it nor ever truly forgetting. With alcohol, it’s something else entirely.
No greatness from elsewhere, no tragedy in this stubbornness. Stories of alcohol have a tendency to fall into the realm of comedy, explaining the difficulty in speaking ill of it. The pleasures it gives are varied in type: sometimes subtle, sometimes brutal. It warms people, it helps them talk, animates conversation, provides them with a topic, creates complicities, solemnises transactions, unknots distrust, sustains social lives. It marks all moments in life, all that reassure human beings about their humanity and men about their virility. It is a little laughing and familiar God.
Here, only men worship it. Women never drink in these parts, other than a few young girls or old madams isolated in their dead villages. Most of them, under the pretext that they don’t like the taste, will refuse a glass of wine obstinately, whether the insistent offering proffered be Muscat or Port. At the ritual time of the Apéritif, when men gather round a table, the women won’t even sit down, regardless of whether they are serving or going about their tasks. This is part of a persistent form of gender distinction. To each their type of work and place.

Source text - French Je me suis sans doute éraflé la joue. Elle me brûle. Ma mâchoire me fait mal. J'ai renversé un vase en tombant, je me souviens l'avoir entendu exploser sur le sol et je me demande si je ne me suis pas blessée avec un morceau de verre, je ne sais pas. Le soleil brille encore dehors. Il fait bon. Je reprends doucement mon souffle. Je sens que je vais avoir une terrible migraine, dans quelques minutes.
Il y a deux jours, comme j'arrosais mon jardin, un mes- sage inquiétant m'est apparu en levant les yeux vers le ciel. Un nuage, d'une forme très explicite. J'ai regardé autour de moi pour voir s'il s'adressait à d'autres, mais je n'ai vu personne. Et on n'entendait rien, juste moi en train d'arroser, pas une parole, pas un cri, pas un souffle d'air, pas un seul bruit d'engin — et Dieu sait qu'il y a souvent une tondeuse ou un souffleur en action dans les parages.
Je suis sensible, en général, aux interventions du monde extérieur. Je peux rester enfermée plusieurs jours d'affilée, ne pas mettre un seul pied dehors si je perçois un inquiétant présage dans le vol erratique d'un oiseau — si possible accompagné d'un cri perçant ou d'un croassement lugubre — ou encore si un rayon de soleil le soir vient étrangement me frapper en pleine figure en traversant le feuillage ou si je me penche pour donner un peu d'argent à un homme assis sur le trottoir qui soudain m'attrape le bras et me hurle au visage : « Les démons, les visages des démons... mais si je menace de les tuer, là, ils m'obéissent...!! » — l'homme éructait, répétait cette phrase en boucle avec des yeux fous, sans me lâcher et en rentrant, ce jour-là, j'avais fait annuler mon billet de train, oubliant à l'instant le but de mon voyage, n'y attachant plus aucune espèce d'intérêt, pas le moindre, n'étant pas candidate au suicide ni sourde aux avertissements, aux messages et aux signes que l'on m'envoyait.
À seize ans, j'ai loupé un avion à la suite d'une beuverie aux fêtes de Bayonne et cet avion s'est écrasé. J'y ai longuement réfléchi. J'ai alors décidé que dorénavant, j'allais prendre certaines précautions afin de protéger ma vie. J'ai admis que ces choses existaient et j'ai laissé rire ceux qui prenaient le parti d'en rire. Je ne sais pour quelle raison mais les signes venus du ciel m'ont toujours semblé les plus pertinents, les plus impérieux, et un nuage en forme de X — un genre assez rare pour attirer doublement mon attention — ne peut que m'inciter à me tenir sur mes gardes. Je ne sais pas ce qui m'a pris. Comment ai-je pu relâcher ma vigilance ? Même si c'est un peu — beaucoup ? — à cause de Marty. J'ai tellement honte. Je suis tellement furieuse, à présent. Furieuse après moi. Il y a une chaîne à ma porte. Il y a une maudite chaîne à ma porte, l'ai-je oublié ? Je me relève et je vais la mettre. Je pince un instant ma lèvre inférieure entre mes dents et je reste immobile une minute. En dehors du vase cassé, je ne constate aucun désordre. Je monte me changer. Vincent vient dîner avec son amie et rien n'est prêt.
La jeune femme est enceinte, mais l'enfant n'est pas de Vincent. Je ne dis plus rien, à ce sujet. Je n'ai rien à y gagner. Je n'ai plus la force de me battre avec lui. Ni envie. Lorsque je me suis rendu compte à quel point il ressemblait à son père, j'ai cru devenir folle. Elle s'appelle Josie. Elle cherche un appartement pour Vincent et pour elle, et pour le bébé à venir. Richard a feint de se trouver mal lorsque nous avons évoqué le montant des loyers dans la capitale. Il a marché de long en large en maugréant, comme c'est devenu son habitude. Je vois combien il a vieilli, combien il est devenu sombre en vingt ans. « Quoi, par an ou par mois ? » a-t‐il fait en prenant un air mauvais. Il n'était pas sûr de trouver l'argent. Tandis que moi, je suis censée bénéficier de revenus confortables et réguliers.
Naturellement.
« Tu as voulu un fils, lui dis-je. Souviens-toi. »
Je l'ai quitté car il était devenu insupportable et aujourd'hui, il est plus insupportable que jamais. Je l'encourage à se remettre à fumer ou même à courir afin d'évacuer cette amertume ombrageuse qui l'anime la plupart du temps.
« Excuse-moi, mais va te faire foutre, me dit-il. En tout cas, je suis à sec pour le moment. Je croyais qu'il avait trouvé un job.
— Je ne sais pas. Parlez-en, tous les deux. »
Avec lui non plus, je ne veux plus me battre. J'ai passé plus de vingt ans de ma vie avec cet homme, mais par- fois je me demande où j'en ai trouvé la force.
Je me fais couler un bain. Ma joue est rouge, et même un peu jaune, comme de la terre cuite, et j'ai une petite goutte de sang au coin de la lèvre. Je suis sérieusement décoiffée — la pince qui retenait mes cheveux en a libéré une bonne partie. Je verse des sels dans la baignoire. C'est de la folie car il est déjà cinq heures de l'après-midi et cette fille, Josie, je ne la connais pas très bien. Je ne sais pas trop quoi en penser.
Il fait pourtant une lumière incroyablement belle et douce, tellement éloignée d'une quelconque impression de menace. J'ai tant de mal à croire qu'une telle chose me soit arrivée par un ciel si bleu, par ce si beau temps. La salle de bains est inondée de soleil, j'entends des cris, des jeux d'enfants au loin, l'horizon poudroie, les oiseaux, les écureuils, etc.
C'est tellement bon. Ce bain est miraculeux. Je ferme les yeux. Au bout d'un moment, je ne prétends pas avoir tout effacé, mais j'ai totalement recouvré mes esprits. La migraine attendue ne vient pas. J'appelle le traiteur et je fais livrer des sushis.
J'ai connu pire avec des hommes que j'avais librement choisis.
Je passe l'aspirateur après avoir ramassé les plus gros morceaux du vase, là où je suis tombée — penser que quelques heures plus tôt j'étais couchée là, le cœur bat- tant, me met assez mal à l'aise. Et voilà que, comme je m'apprête à me servir un verre, je reçois un message d'Irène, ma mère, qui a soixante-quinze ans et que je n'ai pas vue — pas plus que je n'ai de ses nouvelles — depuis un mois. Elle prétend qu'elle a rêvé de moi, que je l'appelais à l'aide — alors que je ne l'ai pas appelée du tout.
Vincent ne semble pas tout à fait convaincu par mon histoire. « Ton vélo est en parfait état, me dit-il. C'est quand même curieux. » Je le fixe un instant, puis je hausse les épaules. Josie est écarlate. Vincent vient de lui saisir vivement le poignet et la force à reposer les cacahuètes. Elle a déjà grossi d'une vingtaine de kilos, paraît-il.
Ils ne vont pas du tout ensemble. Richard, qui n'y connaît strictement rien, m'a assuré que ce genre de filles était souvent une affaire au lit — c'est quoi être une affaire au lit ? En attendant, elle cherche un trois-pièces de cent mètres carrés minimum et dans le quartier qui l'intéresse, on ne trouve rien de cette taille à moins de 3000 €.
« J'ai déposé une candidature chez McDonald's, dit-il. Pour voir venir. » Je l'encourage dans cette voie — ou dans quelque chose d'un peu plus valorisant, pourquoi pas ? Une femme enceinte coûte cher à entretenir. « Il vaut mieux que tu le saches », lui ai-je dit aussitôt, avant même qu'il ne me la présente. « Je ne te demande pas ton avis, m'a-t‐il répondu. Je me fous de ton avis. »
Il est comme ça avec moi, depuis que j'ai quitté son père. Richard est un excellent tragédien. Et Vincent son meilleur public. Comme nous sortons de table, il me considère de nouveau d'un œil soupçonneux : « Mais qu'est-ce que tu as ? Qu'est-ce qui ne va pas ? » Je ne cesse d'y penser, bien entendu, ça ne m'a pas quittée durant tout le repas. Je me demande si j'ai été choisie au hasard ou si j'ai été suivie, si c'est quelqu'un que je connais. Leurs histoires de loyers, de chambre pour l'enfant, ne m'intéressent pas, mais j'admire ce qu'ils entreprennent — ce qu'ils tentent —, ce tour qui consiste à faire que leur problème devienne mon problème. Je le fixe un court instant, cherchant à imaginer son expression si je lui racontais ce qui m'est arrivé dans l'après-midi. Mais ça ne fait plus partie de mes attributions. Imaginer les réactions de mon fils n'est plus en mon pouvoir.
« Est-ce que tu t'es battue ?!
— Battue, Vincent ? » Je pouffe légèrement. « Battue ?!
— Tu t'es cognée avec quelqu'un ?
— Oh écoute, ne sois pas stupide. Je n'ai pas l'habitude de me “cogner” avec qui que ce soit. »
Je me lève et vais rejoindre Josie sur la véranda. Il fait bon, mais malgré la fraîcheur du soir, elle s'évente car elle étouffe. Les dernières semaines sont les plus terribles. Je n'aurais recommencé pour rien au monde. Je me serais ouvert le ventre pour mettre fin à mon supplice. Vincent le sait. Je n'ai jamais cherché à embellir cet épisode. J'ai toujours voulu qu'il sache. Et qu'il n'oublie pas. Ma mère a tenu le même discours avec moi et je n'en suis pas morte.
Nous regardons le ciel, sa noirceur étoilée. J'observe Josie du coin de l'œil. Je ne l'ai observée qu'une demi- douzaine de fois et je ne sais pas grand-chose. Elle n'est pas antipathique. Connaissant Vincent, mon fils, je la plains, mais il y a quelque chose de minéral chez elle, de froidement entêté, et j'estime qu'elle peut s'en sortir si elle veut s'en donner la peine. Je sens qu'elle est solide, qu'il y a quelque chose de tapi en elle.
« Alors, c'est pour décembre, lui dis-je. Ça approche.
— Il a raison, dit-elle. Vous êtes toute chamboulée.
— Non, pas du tout, dis-je. Ça va. Il me connaît mal. » Je referme derrière eux. Je fais le tour du rez-de-chaussée armée d'un hachoir à viande, je vérifie les portes et les fenêtres. Je m'enferme dans ma chambre. Quand l'aube commence à l'envahir, je n'ai toujours pas fermé l'œil. Le matin devient bleu, resplendissant. Je file voir ma mère. Dans son salon, je croise un jeune type athlétique mais tout à fait ordinaire.
Je me demande si mon agresseur de la veille ressemblait à ça — je n'ai que le souvenir d'une cagoule avec deux simples trous pour les yeux, et encore, je ne me souviens déjà plus si elle était bleue ou rouge —, s'il ressemblait à ce type à l'air satisfait qui me cligne de l'œil en quittant l'appartement de ma mère.
« Maman, mais combien les payes-tu, mais quelle tristesse !... dis-je. Tu ne pourrais pas changer ? Je ne sais pas, moi, sors avec un intellectuel ou un écrivain. Tu n'as pas besoin d'une espèce d'étalon, je suppose. À ton âge.
— Ça ne m'atteint pas. Je n'ai pas à rougir de ma vie sexuelle. Tu n'es qu'une petite garce. Ton père a raison. — Maman, on arrête. Ne me parle pas de lui. Il est bien où il est.
— Mais qu'est-ce que tu racontes, ma pauvre fille ?! Bien sûr que non, ton père n'est pas bien où il est. Il devient fou.
— Il est fou. Parle avec son psychiatre. »
Elle m'offre le petit déjeuner. Je crois qu'elle s'est fait refaire quelque chose depuis la dernière fois. Ou juste botoxer ou je ne sais quoi, peu importe. Elle a changé de vie de façon radicale depuis que son mari — qui est aussi malheureusement mon père — est enfermé — même si elle a œuvré pour la bonne cause dans un premier temps. Une vraie dévergondée. Elle a dépensé beaucoup d'argent en chirurgie esthétique, ces dernières années. Parfois, sous certain éclairage, elle me fait peur.
« Très bien. Qu'est-ce que tu veux ?
— Ce que je veux ? Maman, c'est toi qui m'as appelée. »
Elle me considère un instant sans réagir.
Puis elle se penche vers moi et me dit : « Réfléchis bien, avant de me répondre. Ne me réponds pas à la légère. Réfléchis bien. Que dirais-tu si je me remariais ? Réfléchis bien.
— Je te tuerais, c'est bien simple. Pas besoin de réfléchir. »
Elle secoue doucement la tête, croise les jambes, allume une cigarette.
«Tu as toujours souhaité une version aseptisée du monde, me dit-elle. Le sombre, l'anormal, t'a toujours fait peur.
— Je te tuerais. Inutile de me sortir ton charabia. Tu es prévenue. »
J'ai fermé les yeux, jusque-là. Certes, son appétit sexuel m'a toujours étonnée, et je ne le cautionne pas — mieux que ça : il me répugne assez — mais j'ai décidé de me montrer ouverte et libre d'esprit sur ce point. Si c'est sa façon de s'en sortir je l'accepte — sans chercher à en connaître les détails. Très bien. Cependant, lorsque l'affaire prend une tournure un peu trop sérieuse et que nous risquons d'avancer sur un terrain glissant, comme c'est le cas avec cette histoire de mariage, ma foi j'interviens. Qui est l'heureux élu cette fois ? Qui a-t‐elle rencontré ? Qui donc est ce Ralf — le bougre a un nom — qui apparaît dans le champ et l'assombrit ?
J'ai écarté un avocat qui se prétendait fou d'elle en déclarant qu'elle était porteuse du virus, puis un directeur d'agence en lui racontant la vérité sur notre histoire — qui jette aussitôt un froid — et encore ne l'avaient-ils pas demandée en mariage. Je ne pense pas pouvoir tolérer quelque chose d'aussi grotesque. Une femme de soixante-quinze ans. Son union, les fleurs, la lune de miel. Elle ressemble à ces vieilles actrices terrifiantes, entièrement replâtrées, aux seins remontés — 5 000 € la paire —, à l'œil brillant, violemment bronzées.
« J'aimerais savoir qui va payer mon loyer durant les années qui viennent, finit-elle par soupirer. J'aimerais que tu me le dises.
— Moi, bien sûr. C'est ce que j'ai toujours fait, non ? »
Elle sourit, bien qu'elle soit visiblement très contrariée.
« Tu es d'un tel égoïsme, Michèle. C'est effrayant. »
Je beurre les toasts qui viennent de sauter du grille-pain. Je ne l'ai pas vue depuis un bon mois et j'ai déjà envie de partir.
«Imagine qu'il t'arrive quelque chose», dit-elle. J'ai envie de lui répondre que c'est un risque à courir.
Je couvre un toast de confiture de framboises. Abondamment. Exprès. Difficile de ne pas s'en mettre plein les mains, et je le lui tends. Elle hésite. On dirait des grumeaux de sang. Elle fixe la chose un instant et elle me dit :
« Je crois qu'il n'en a plus pour longtemps, Michèle. Je crois qu'il faut que tu le saches. Ton père n'en a plus pour très longtemps.
— Eh bien, bon débarras. C'est tout ce que j'ai à dire.
— Tu n'es pas obligée d'être si dure, tu sais... Ne fais pas quelque chose que tu regretteras toute ta vie.
— Quoi ? Je vais regretter quoi ? Est-ce que tu délires ?
— Il a payé. Il est en prison depuis trente ans. C'est loin.
— Je ne dirais pas ça. Je ne dirais pas que c'est loin. Comment peux-tu sortir de telles énormités ? C'est loin. Tu trouves que c'est loin, toi? Tu veux des jumelles ? » J'en ai les larmes qui me montent aux yeux, comme si je venais d'avaler une cuillerée de moutarde forte. « J'ai pas l'intention d'y aller, maman. J'ai pas du tout l'intention d'y aller. Ne te fais pas d'illusions là- dessus. Il est mort depuis longtemps pour moi. »
Elle me glisse un regard plein de reproche puis se détourne vers la fenêtre. « Je ne sais même pas s'il me reconnaît encore. Mais il demande après toi.
— Ah bon ? Et qu'est-ce que ça peut bien me faire ? Que veux-tu que ça me fasse ? Depuis quand lui sers- tu de facteur ?
— N'attends pas. C'est tout ce que j'ai à dire : n'attends pas.
— Écoute, je ne mettrai jamais un pied dans cette prison. Aucune chance pour que je lui rende visite. Il commence à s'évanouir dans mon esprit et j'aimerais qu'il finisse par en disparaître totalement, si possible.
— Comment peux-tu dire ça ? C'est terrible de dire ça.
— Ah, épargne-moi ces salades, s'il te plaît. Par pitié. Ce démon a gâché nos vies, non ?
Translation - English I probably scratched my cheek. It burns. My jaw hurts. I spilled a vase when I fell, I remember hearing it explode on the floor and I wonder if I haven’t cut myself with a shard of glass – I don’t know. The sun is still shining outside. The weather is nice. I slowly start to catch my breath. I can feel a terrible migraine coming on, just a few minutes away.
Two days ago, as I was watering my plants, a worrying message came to me as I lifted my eyes up to the sky: a cloud, in a very explicit form. I looked around to see if it was addressing someone else, but didn’t see anyone. And I couldn’t hear anything, only the sound of me watering the plants, not a word, not a cry, not a breeze, no sound coming from an engine – and God knows it’s common enough to hear the sound of a lawnmower or leaf blower going full throttle in these parts.
I am sensitive, for the most part, to the interventions of the outside world. I can stay indoors for days on end, never setting foot outside if I see a worrying omen in the erratic flight of a bird – possibly accompanied by a piercing cry or a mournful croak – or if a sun ray comes to hit me in the face strangely in the evening through foliage or when I bend down to give a man sat on the pavement some change and he suddenly grabs me and shouts in my face "the demons, the faces of demons... but if I threaten to kill them, then, they listen to me…!!!" – the man belches out, repeating the phrase in a loop with crazed eyes, without letting go of me. When I got home that evening, I cancelled my train ticket, forgetting in an instant the aim of my trip, no longer caring about it in the slightest, what with my not being a candidate for suicide, nor deaf to the warnings, the messages and signs which were being sent to me.
When I was sixteen, I missed my flight after getting drunk at the Bayonne fête, and the plane crashed. I thought about this for a very long time. I then decided that from this moment on, I was going to take certain precautions in order to protect my own life. I admitted that these things exist and I allowed those who didn't take them seriously to do as they please. I don’t know why the signs which come from the sky always seem more pertinent to me, the most imperial, and a cloud shaped like an X – the type rare enough to make do a double take – can only lead to my being on my guard. I don’t know what got into me. When did I stop being so vigilant? Even if it’s a bit – a lot? – to do with Marty. I am so ashamed, so angry now. Angry with myself. There is a chain on my door. There is a damned chain on my door, did I forget all about it? I get back up and put it on. I bite my bottom lip in between my teeth and stand still for a minute. Apart from the broken vase, I realise that nothing else seems to be out of place. I go upstairs to get changed. Vincent is coming to dinner with his friend and nothing is ready.
The young woman is pregnant, but the child isn’t Vincent’s. I say nothing more on the matter. I have nothing to gain from it. I no longer have the strength to fight with him, nor the desire. When I realised to what extent he looked like his father, I thought I was losing my mind. Her name is Josie. She is looking for a flat for her and Vincent, and for the baby on the way. Richard pretended to feel unwell when we started to talk about the cost of renting in the capital. He paced up and down, muttering, as had become his habit. I can see to what extent he’s aged, how sombre he’s become in twenty years. "What, per year or per month?" he asked, turning nasty. He wasn’t sure if he’d be able to find the money. Whereas I am supposed to be benefitting from a regular and comfortable income.
Naturally.
"You wanted a son, I told him. Don’t you remember?"
I left him because he’d become unbearable, and nowadays he is more unbearable than ever. I encourage him to start smoking again or even start running in order to expunge himself from this dark bitterness which drives him most of the time.
"Excuse me, but go fuck yourself, he tells me. In any case, I’m completely skint. I thought he’d found a job.
- I don’t know. Why don’t you two talk about it."
I don’t want to fight with him anymore either. I spent more than twenty years of my life with this man, but sometimes I wonder where I found the strength to do so.
I run myself a bath. My cheek is red, a little yellow even, like terracotta, and there’s a small drop of blood in the corner of my mouth. My hair looks a complete mess – the clip which held it up has freed a large chunk of it. I pour some salts into the bathtub. This is madness as it’s already 5pm and this girl, Josie, I don’t know her very well. I don’t know what to make of her.
There is an incredibly pretty and soft light, so far removed from any sort of threat. I find it hard to believe that such a thing should happen to me when the sky is so blue, the weather so nice. The bathroom is flooded by the sun; I can hear cries, children playing in the distance, the dusty horizon, the birds, squirrels, etc.
It feels so good. This bath is miraculous. I close my eyes. After a while, I can’t pretend it has erased everything, but my spirits have been boosted. The expected migraine never comes. I call the caterer and ask if some sushi can be delivered.
I’ve known worse from men I chose freely.
I hoover after picking up the larger pieces of the vase, there where I fell – thinking that a few hours previously I was lying there, my heart beating fast, makes me feel quite uncomfortable. Just as I was about to pour myself a drink, I received a message from Irene, my mother, who is seventy-five and who I haven’t seen or even heard from for over a month. She pretends that she had a dream about me, that I was calling for her help – I never did such a thing.
Vincent doesn’t seem wholly convinced by my story. “Your bike is in perfect working order, he said. You have to admit it’s strange.” I stare at him for a moment, and then I shrug my shoulders. Josie is bright red. Vincent has just grabbed her wrist forcefully and forced her to put the peanuts she was holding back. Apparently she has already put on around 20kgs.
They really don’t go together very well. Richard, who knows strictly nothing about anything, assured me that this type of girl was quite often a deal in bed – what does it mean to be a deal in bed? In the meantime, she is looking for a 2 bed flat of 100m2 minimum and in the neighbourhood she’s interested in, you can’t find anything of that size for less than 3,000 Euros.
"I’ve applied to work at McDonald’s, he said. Just to see." I encourage him in this endeavour – or to go for something more validating, why not? A pregnant woman costs a lot to look after. "It’s better that you know", I said straight away, even before he presented her to me. "I’m not asking for your opinion, he replied. I don’t give a shit about your opinion."
This is how he is with me, since I left his father. Richard is an excellent tragedian. And Vincent is his best audience. As we leave the table, he looks at me once more with suspicious eyes: "What’s wrong with you? What’s the matter?" Of course, I can’t stop thinking about it; I couldn’t shake it throughout the meal. I wonder if I was chosen at random or if I was followed, if it’s someone I know. Their stories about rent, about a room for the child, don’t interest me, but I admire what they are undertaking – what they are attempting - this trick which turns their issues into my own. I look directly at him for a short while, trying to imagine his expression if I told him what had happened to me this afternoon. But this is no longer one of my attributes. Imagining my son’s reaction is no longer within my powers.
"Did you get in a fight?!
- Fight, Vincent?" I puff my cheeks out slightly. "Fight?!
- Did you have a punch up with someone?
- Oh listen will you, don’t be so ridiculous. I don’t make a habit of having «punch ups» with people."
I get up to join Josie in the conservatory. The temperature is pleasant, but despite the coolness of the night, she fans herself as if she is suffocating. The last few weeks are the worse. I wouldn’t have started again for the world. I would have opened up my belly to put an end to my agony. Vincent knows it. I never tried to embellish this episode. I always wanted him to know. And I wanted him to never forget. My mother made sure I knew the same and I didn’t die from it.
We look up to the sky and its starry darkness. I observe Josie from the corner of my eye. I have only observed her half a dozen times and I don’t know much about her. She isn’t unfriendly. Knowing Vincent, my son, I feel for her, but there is something mineral within her, something coldly stubborn, which makes me think that she will be able to get through this if she wants to bother trying. I feel that she is solid, that there is something lurking inside her.
"So, you’re due in December, I say to her. It’s coming up.
- He’s right, she says. You’re all cut up.
- No, not even slightly, I tell her. I’m fine. He doesn’t know me very well."
I close the door behind them. I do a sweep of the ground floor armed with a meat grinder and check the windows and doors. I lock myself in my room. When dawn begins to fill the room, I still haven’t closed my eyes. The morning becomes blue, resplendent. I hurry to go and see my mother. In her lounge, I encounter a young athletic man who is otherwise completely ordinary.
I wonder if my aggressor from the previous night looks like he does – I only remember a cagoule with two simple holes for eyes, and yet, I can’t remember if it was blue or red – if he looked like this guy who seems self-satisfied, winking at me as he leaves my mother’s apartment.
“Mum, how much do you pay them, and what sadness!... I say.
Couldn’t you change? I don’t know, go out with an intellectual or a writer or something. You don’t need a stud, at your age.
- It doesn’t affect me. I don’t have to be embarrassed about my sex life. You’re nothing but a little bitch. Your father’s right.
- Mum, let’s stop there. Don’t talk to me about him. He’s fine where he is.
- What are you on about, my poor girl?! Of course your father isn’t fine where he is. He’s becoming crazy.
- He is crazy. Talk to his psychiatrist."
She serves me breakfast. I think she’s had something done since the last time I saw her. Or she’s just been botoxed. Or I don’t know what, but no matter. She has changed her life in a radical way since her husband – who is also unfortunately my father – got locked up – even if she worked towards getting him released at first. A real slut. She has spent a fortune on cosmetic surgery in recent years. Sometimes, under a certain light, she scares me.
"Fine. What do you want?
- What do I want? Mum, you’re the one who called me."
She studies me for a moment without reacting.
Then, she leans towards me and says: "Think long and hard before answering me. Don’t just answer without thinking. Think hard. What would you say if I remarried? Think hard.
- I would kill you, it’s quite simple. No need to think about it."
She gently shakes her head, crosses her legs, and lights a cigarette.
"You always wished for a sanitised version of the world, she tells me. The sombre, the abnormal, has always frightened you.
- I would kill you. No need to start with your gibberish. Consider yourself warned."
I had closed my eyes, up to then. Certainly, her sexual appetite always surprised me, and I don’t approve in the slightest – I’d go so far as to say it repulses me – but I decided to present myself as being open and free-spirited up to this point. If this is her way of getting out of trouble, then I’ll accept it – without looking to find out the details. Fine. However, when the situation takes a slightly too serious turn and we are on the verge of a slippery slope, as is the case with this story of marriage, then damn it I will intervene. Who is the happy groom-to-be this time? Whom has she met? Who is this Ralf – the guy has a name – who has appeared on the scene and darkened it?
I managed to get rid of a lawyer who pretended to be crazy about her by telling him she has a virus, then an agency director by telling him the truth about our story – which straight away usually puts a dampener on things – and he hadn’t even asked for her hand in marriage.
I don’t think that I could tolerate such a grotesque thing. A seventy-five year old woman. Her union, the flowers, the honeymoon. She looks like one of these terrifying old actresses, entirely re-plastered, with boobs hoisted up – 5,000 Euros for the pair, with shiny eyes and violently tanned.
"I would like to know who is going to pay my rent for the coming years. I would like you to tell me as much.
- Me, of course. It’s what I’ve always done, isn’t it?"
She smiles, even if she is visibly very upset.
"You are so selfish, Michèle. It’s frightening."
I butter my toast which has just jumped out of the toaster. I haven’t seen her in a good month and I already want to leave.
"Imagine if something happened to you", she says. I want to answer that that’s a risk she has to be willing to take.
I cover the toast with raspberry jam. With abandon. On purpose. It’s hard not to get some all over my hands, and I hand it to her. She hesitates. It looks like lumps of blood. She stares at the thing for a while and says to me:
"I don’t think there’s long left, Michèle. I think you have to know. Your father doesn’t have long left.
- Well, good riddance. That’s all I have to say.
- You don’t have to be so hard, you know… Don’t do anything you’ll regret for the rest of your life.
- What? What am I going to regret? Are you delirious?
- He’s paid his dues. He’s been in prison for thirty years. It’s far.
- I wouldn’t say that. I wouldn’t say it’s far. How can you come out with such rubbish? It’s far. Do you really think it’s far, do you? Do you want some binoculars?" Tears spring to my eyes, as if I’ve just swallowed a large spoonful of strong mustard. "But I have no intention of going, mum. I have absolutely no intention of going. Don’t delude yourself on that point. He’s been dead for a long time as far as I’m concerned."
She gives me a reproaching look, then turns towards the window. "I don’t even know if he would still recognise me. But he asks after you.
- Really? And what effect is that supposed to have on me? What do you want me to do? Since when are you his messenger?
- Don’t wait. That’s all I have to say: don’t wait.
- Listen, I will never set foot in this prison. There’s no way I am going to visit him. He is starting to diminish in my thoughts and I would like him to disappear altogether, if possible.
- How can you say that? That’s a terrible thing to say.
- Oh, spare me from your nonsense, please. I beg you. This demon ruined our lives, did he not?
