Descendez le département et découvrez Nîmes et ses arènes où résonnent encore des clameurs de la liesse romaine. Arrêtez-vous déguster une brandade de morue, spécialité locale. Proche de la mer Méditerranée, découvrez la Camargue et ses paysages paradisiaques. Dans les départements voisins, ne manquez pas le festival d'Avignon en juillet, et le panorama en haut du viaduc de Millau en toute saison.

Let’s not forget the underground Bramabiau River, les Fosses de Fournès (a lunar landscape made by a huge amount of clay sediment being shaped by erosion), the Junas quarries and the Grottes de Trabuc.
Journey further down the department and discover Nîmes and its arenas, where the clamour of cheering Romans still echoes. Stop and try a “brandade de morue” – a local speciality. Near the Mediterranean Sea, discover The Camargue and its idyllic scenery. In the neighbouring departments, don’t miss the Avignon Festival in July, or the panoramic views from the top of the Millau Viaduct, at any time of year.

Dinesh Kumar Jain es el embajador de India en México desde febrero del 2009. Su visión de la relación económica bilateral es optimista, pero crítica: “El comercio y la inversión han crecido mucho en los últimos años, pero estamos muy lejos de haber desarrollado nuestro potencial. Hay más complementariedad que competencia. Somos aliados naturales. El mayor obstáculo es el desconocimiento mutuo”.
Hay 35 empresas indias con inversiones en México. Su presencia es creciente en áreas como Tecnologías de la Información, farmacéutica e ingeniería. Por parte de México, destaca la incursión en India de firmas como Cinépolis, que se ha convertido en el mayor exhibidor de películas del subcontinente y también Bimbo y Maseca, “el área de alimentos procesados tiene un enorme potencial en mi país”, dice el Embajador, “India es el segundo mayor consumidor del mundo y sólo procesa 4% de su consumo, pero esto cambiará en los próximos años en la medida en que se modifican las formas de vida tradicionales”.
El comercio bilateral alcanzó en el 2011 un promedio de 300 millones de dólares mensuales. Las cifras a noviembre suponen un intercambio cercano a 3,200 millones. Esto es un crecimiento de casi 40% respecto del 2010, pero una cifra insignificante considerando que México tiene comercio exterior por 700,000 millones de dólares anuales y que India supera los 600,000 millones.
“Hay que considerar que nuestro intercambio era casi nulo hace 20 años. Podemos intensificar las relaciones bilaterales y llevarlas a otro nivel. Nuestras economías son complementarias y tienen enormes posibilidades de colaboración. No hay un solo sector en el que no haya potencial de crecimiento y de desarrollar proyectos conjuntos. Podemos hablar de industria textil, minería, alimentación, turismo y muchos más”, considera el diplomático.
En industria farmacéutica y Tecnologías de la Información, India es una potencia mundial que ha empezado a hacer sentir su presencia directa en México. Los productores de medicamentos Hetero Drugs y Doctor Reddy’s ya producen en nuestro país. En el campo de las Tecnologías de la Información, destaca Tata Consulting Services, que se ha convertido en una de las mayores empresas de México en este sector. Tiene tres centros, ubicados en Querétaro, Guadalajara y Distrito Federal.
“Tuve hace unas semanas una reunión con representantes de la mayoría de las empresas indias que han invertido en México. No recibí una sola queja seria, ni siquiera relacionada con seguridad. Su experiencia es muy positiva”, enfatiza Dinesh Kumar Jain, que antes de venir a México sirvió como máximo representante en Brunei y también ha ocupado altos cargos en el gabinete económico de su país.
“Una cosa que no deja de sorprenderme es que puede haber tanto desconocimiento entre dos países tan grandes e importantes, como India y México, a pesar de la globalización”, dice el Embajador. En México, pocos saben que India es una de las cuatro mayores economías del mundo, medida en términos de paridad de poder adquisitivo. En India, el conocimiento de México también es muy escaso, no saben de su cultura ni del enorme potencial que tiene, se lamenta.
“Este desconocimiento limita las posibilidades de colaboración y proyectos conjuntos en industrias como la del entretenimiento. México es una potencia en televisión y espectáculos. India es el mayor productor de películas del mundo y muy fuerte en telenovelas. Podría haber proyectos conjuntos que incrementarían la presencia de México en Asia y de India en América Latina”, agrega Kumar Jain.
Un antídoto frente a este desconocimiento es el turismo. La secretaria Gloria Guevara ha ido a India a promover México. “Tenemos millones de turistas potenciales”, concluye el Embajador. Además hay interés de empresas indias por invertir en el sector turístico de México, en la construcción y operación de hoteles.
Yo le daría un consejo a los mexicanos que quieren hacer negocios en India. Tienen que ir personalmente allá. Eso es muy importante. Somos un país muy grande y complejo. Además, les sugeriría buscar un socio que conozca la cultura de los negocios de India”.
La crisis del 2008 golpeó el intercambio comercial entre México e India, pero ya se recuperó y se superó el nivel de intercambio que teníamos en ese entonces. No sé qué pasará en el corto plazo con la economía mundial, pero estoy seguro de que en el largo plazo nuestra relación se intensificará”.

Dinesh Kumar Jain has been the Indian Ambassador to Mexico since February 2009. His vision of their bilateral economic relationship is optimistic but critical: “Trade and investment have grown a lot in the last few years, but we are far from having developed our potential. Our relationship is more complementary than competitive. We are natural allies. Our biggest obstacle is mutual ignorance.”
There are 35 Indian companies with investments in Mexico, with their presence growing in areas such as Information Technology, pharmaceuticals and engineering. As for Mexico, their incursion into India is highlighted with companies such as Cinépolis, which has become the largest cinema operator in the subcontinent, and food processing companies Bimbo and Maseca. “The processed food industry has enormous potential in my country,” says the Ambassador. “India is the second largest consumer in the world and only processes 4% of its consumption, but this will change in the coming years as they change their traditional ways of life.”
In 2011, bilateral trade reached an average of $300m a month. The November figures estimate an exchange of almost $3.2bn – an increase of almost 40% compared to 2010, but still a negligible amount considering that Mexico’s foreign trade amounts to $700bn a year and India’s more than $600bn.
“We have to consider that our exchange was almost non-existent 20 years ago. We can strengthen our bilateral relations and take them to another level. Our economies complement each other and have enormous opportunity for collaboration. There is not a single sector without potential to grow and develop joint projects - from the textile industry to mining, food production, tourism and much more,” Kumar Jain believes.
In the pharmaceutical and IT industries, India is a global power that has started to make its direct presence felt in Mexico. The drug producers Hetero Drugs and Doctor Reddy’s are already manufacturing in Mexico. A noteworthy company in the field of Information Technology is Tata Consulting Services, which has become one of the largest IT companies in Mexico. It has three centres, located in Querétaro, Guadalajara and Mexico City.
“I had a meeting a few weeks ago with representatives from most of the Indian companies who have invested in Mexico. I did not receive a single serious complaint, not even related to security. Their experiences have been very positive,” says Dinesh Kumar Jain, who before coming to Mexico served as a senior representative in Brunei and has also held high positions in his own country’s economic cabinet.
“One thing that always surprises me is how there can be so little awareness between two such large and important countries like India and Mexico, in spite of globalisation,” says the Ambassador. He laments that in Mexico, not many people know that India is one of the four major economies of the world, measured in terms of purchasing power parity. In India, knowledge of Mexico is also very limited; not much is known of its culture or of its enormous potential.
“This lack of knowledge limits the possibilities of collaboration and joint projects in industries such as entertainment. Mexico is a powerhouse in television and film. India is the biggest film producer in the world and makes good soap operas. We could have joint projects that would increase the presence of Mexico in Asia and of India in Latin America,” He adds.
One way to increase awareness between the two countries is through tourism. The Tourism Secretary Gloria Guevara has been to India to promote Mexico. “We have millions of potential tourists,” says Kumar Jain. “There is also interest from Indian companies to invest in Mexico’s tourism sector, in the construction and running of hotels.
“The advice that I would give to Mexicans who want to do business in India is that they have to go there personally. That is very important. It is a very large and complex country. I would also suggest finding a partner who knows the business culture in India.
“The 2008 economic crisis greatly affected trade between Mexico and India, but it has already recovered and the level of exchange has exceeded what we had before. I don’t know what will happen in the short term with the global economy, but I am sure that in the long term it will strengthen our relationship.”
