English to German: Translation memory General field: Other
Source text - English Translation memory managers are most suitable for translating technical documentation and documents containing specialized vocabularies. Their benefits include: (1) Ensuring that the document is completely translated (translation memories do not accept empty target segments) (2) Ensuring that the translated documents are consistent, including common definitions, phrasings and terminology. This is important when different translators are working on a single project. (3) Enabling translators to translate documents in a wide variety of formats without having to own the software typically required to process these formats. (4) Accelerating the overall translation process; since translation memories "remember" previously translated material, translators have to translate it only once. (5) Reducing costs of long-term translation projects; for example the text of manuals, warning messages or series of documents needs to be translated only once and can be used several times. (6) For large documentation projects, savings (in time or money) thanks to the use of a TM package may already be apparent even for the first translation of a new project, but normally such savings are only apparent when translating subsequent versions of a project that was translated before using translation memory.
Portuguese to German: Aquecendo nosso mundo General field: Other

Experience
Years of experience: 12. Registered at ProZ.com: Apr 2013.
My interest in languages started very early. I went to a school where I learned Russian starting at the age of 10. Soon after my brother started learning English in school I was eager to learn it too, I was fascinated by it. So I went on to study English. I just loved it. When I was 17 I spent 1 year abroad as an exchange student in Indonesia. Learning Indonesian came very easy to me and I was able to better my English as well. After my experience abroad I worked voluntarily with exchange students from around the world for a few years. Strangely I never came up with the idea of working with languages, though it seemed to be obvious.
I decided to study Economics with specialization in International Economics, Banking and Finance. I found it interesting but I never felt the same passion as with languages. At the time I was traveling to Brazil regularly and had started to learn Portuguese. After I graduated I moved to Brazil and worked in different fields. But I was never really satisfied with my jobs. Eventually I was asked to do some translations of letters that children wrote to their sponsors and I agreed. That’s how I entered the translation business.
First it seemed like a hobby. I worked a few times as a consecutive interpreter and did some translation jobs here and there. Then I started looking for paid jobs on the Internet. It took a while but eventually I found a few agencies who signed me up and I started translating more and more. Last year I took the exam of Cambridge English CAE and I passed at grade A (C2).
I’m constantly learning and improving my skills. Being a freelance translator I finally do what I love – working with languages. I hope I can continue doing that.
