Wir erinnern uns noch an den emphatischen Einsatz des Bundesumweltministers Sigmar Gabriel im Wahlkampf 2009, der die Wahl zu einer Schicksalsentscheidung über die weitere Nutzung der Kernenergie zuspitzen wollte. Gas dagegen kann flexible eingesetzt werden.“ Viele plappern diese Scheinweisheiten nach, und wir finden dies Darstellung in zahlreichen Kommentaren immer wieder.

Federal Minister for the Environment, Sigmar Gabriel's, emphatic push during the 2009 election campaign to use the election to stage a final showdown on the continued use of atomic power, has not been forgotten. One of his central arguments was that: “the assertion that together atomic and renewable power technologies could secure the future of german power provision, is simply a grand delusion. Because there is one thing they certainly can not do with atomic power stations and that is to use them as off-set power equalisers1 for the prioritised feed-in of renewable energy sources into the national grid.” (22.06.2009). In so saying he was adopting the position of his predecessor, Jürgen Trittin, who baldly stated that: “Atomic power stations can not, at short notice, be powered down in line with lessening demand. Gas, on the other hand, can be deployed flexibly.” Many recite this old wives' tale parrot fashion and, repeatedly, one encounters this version in numerous specialist papers.

This could also be power regulators or power stabilisers – it refers to the supposedly impossible use of atomic power stations to balance out an irregular power supply from renewable energy sources by either raising or lowering the energy output of the atomic power station such that the total energy output derived from both atomic and renewable sources remains constant.

Source text - English Though Berlin is one of Europe’s most diverse and progressive cities, it doesn’t take long for a foreign visitor to start to feel like they’re partaking in a form of gloom tourism. Should we visit the Stasi Museum or the Holocaust Memorial? The Oranienburgerstrasse Synagogue or the Reichstag? The bronze Stars of David commemorating Jewish Shoah victims embossed in the sidewalks below, and billboards with messages such as, “We Must Never Forget” overhead can feel like a non-stop assault of the city’s horror-filled past. It was on a fittingly gray day that I decided to take the S-Bahn to former East Berlin to visit one of the landmarks I had not yet seen, Hohenschönhausen, which, from 1951-1989 served as the Stasi’s most notorious prison. Despite the promise of more grim subject matter, the possibility of a live tour led by an actual DDR-era inmate was too hard to resist.
I arrived at the block and barbed wire building after a Vietnamese lunch in a nearby mall. A small tour was just forming outside the prison gates and I tagged along with a group of visiting Germans and Swiss. Tours auf Deutsch had the best chance of a former inmate as guide, and we were in luck. At the front of our pack stood Jorge Luis Garcia Vazquez, a lively Cuban linguist who had come to Karl-Marx Stadt from Havana in the early 1980s to work as an interpreter. In 1987, at age 28, he landed in Hohenschönhausen after helping a fellow Cuban musician to defect across the Atlantic through West Berlin.
Vazquez, now in his fifties and happily settled, led us through cell blocks and interrogation chambers, all stark and grey, and possessed of a kitschy quality reminiscent of a John LeCarre film. Though the physical torture that characterized the prison’s early years had mostly ceased by the eighties, Vasquez emphasized that psychological torture was just as insidious: sleep deprivation, isolation, water terror, and the other specialized methods the Stasi perfected. His anecdotes about Hohenschönhausen brought the colourless cell blocks to chromatic life, though the story that made the greatest impression took place miles away. After serving his sentence, Vazquez was sent home to Havana, where, wandering the city in 1989, he overheard a German tourist mention that the Berlin wall had fallen. Upon hearing this news, Vazquez sunk to his knees and asked in a whisper, “How many dead?” When the tourist told him the wall had fallen peacefully he started to weep.
Captivated by our guide’s stories we trudged through grim corridors and dank chambers, surfacing in the prison’s fenced yard. There, beneath brick and barbed wire where inmates were once allowed thirty minutes of daylight, Vazquez gave a quick pitch on the human rights work he was doing for Cuba and then set us free.
I walked out of Hohenschönhausen educated about the Stasi’s methods and impressed by the personal life of our guide, but strangely sanguine, and far less horrified than by any site I had seen in Berlin. This struck me as odd since my fellow tour mates were quite shaken up, but then I remembered: they weren’t American.
Though the exact figure is not known, thousands of political prisoners were incarcerated at Hohenschönhausen over thirty-some years. While this is by any standard horrific, I come from a country with more prisoners than any other country in the world. Home to 5% of the world’s population, the U.S. houses 25% of its prisoners, a total of 2.3 million.
In my home state of California, more public money is spent on prisons than universities. Prison life is a stronghold of American popular culture, with numerous books, TV shows, music, and movies depicting life behind bars.
The conditions in American prisons, where inmates are physically and sexually assaulted at alarming rates make the psychological torment of Hohenschönhausen seem almost quaint. And though the term “political prisoner” is not common in U.S. parlance, the racial disparities (African-Americans are incarcerated at six times the rate of Whites, and comprise nearly 40% of the prison population) and the fact that debtors can serve time for economic insolvency, point to a use of the term the East would have been quick to employ.
On the S-Bahn back to West Berlin, the Stalinist block architecture gave way to Gropius and green space as we crossed the line where the wall once divided enemy states. The skies were still gray, but the streets were bustling with busy Berliners enjoying the lively café scene the city is known for. Punk rockers rolled cigarettes outside Checkpoint Charlie; young hipsters drank cider near Brandenburg Gate. In few other cities are the sea changes of Western history more on display than Berlin.
Hohenschönhausen was proof of the change in the city. A city which, in stark contrast to my home country, appears less bound by than liberated from the chains of its past. A Cuban linguist who longed to escape East Germany to cross the Atlantic now lives a free life in Berlin giving tours of the cells where he was once imprisoned. It’s a freedom about which, across the Atlantic, 2.3 million prisoners can only dream.

Was sollten wir als Erstes in Augenschein nehmen: Etwa das Stasi-Museum oder doch lieber das Holocaust-Mahnmal? Die Synagoge in der Oranienburger Straße oder den Reichstag? Sowohl die in den Bürgersteigen eingelassenen bronzenen Davidsterne unter den Füßen, die an die jüdische Shoah erinnern, ebenso wie die Plakate über den Köpfen auf denen Botschaften wie "Nie dürfen wir vergessen!" zu lesen sind, erwecken den Eindruck eines anhaltenden Angriffs aus der grauenhaften Vergangenheit der Stadt. Es war an einem recht trüben Tag als ich die S-Bahn in das ehemalige Ost-Berlin nahm, um eine der Sehenswürdigkeiten aufzusuchen, die ich noch nicht gesehen hatte; Hohenschönhausen, das zwischen 1951 und 1989 als das wohl berüchtigste der Stasi Gefängnisse diente. Der Verheißung ungeachtet woanders etwas zu finden das noch makaberer ist, vermochte ich nicht der Gelegenheit einer Besichtigung unter der Führung eines waschechten Gefangenen aus der DDR-Zeit zu widerstehen.
Nachdem ich beim Vietnamesen in einem nah gelegenen Einkaufszentrum zu Mittag gegessen hatte, fand ich mich beim Gebäude (ein Blockbau-mit-Stacheldraht-Optik) ein. Eine kleine Reisegruppe, bestehend aus Besuchern aus Deutschland und der Schweiz fand sich allmählich vorm Eingang des Zuchthauses zusammen: Dieser Gruppe schloss ich mich an. Beim Anbieter 'Tours auf Deutsch' schien es die besten Aussichten zu geben von einem ehemaligen Häftling herumgeführt zu werden, und wirklich - wir hatten das Glück. Der Anführer unseres Rudels war Jorge Luis Garcia Vazquez, ein quicklebendiger, mehrsprachiger Kubaner, der in den frühen 80ern von Havana nach Karl-Marx-Stadt übersiedelte, um dort als Dolmetscher zu arbeiten. 1987, im Alter von 28 Jahren, landete er in Hohenschönhausen, nachdem er einem Landsmann, einem kubanischen Musiker, geholfen hatte sich über den Atlantik auf dem Weg durch West-Berlin abzusetzen.

Obgleich die körperliche Folter, die die ersten Jahre des Gefängnisses geprägt hatte, bis zu den 80er Jahren weitgehend abgeschafft worden waren, betonte Vasquez die Tatsache, dass die psychische Foltermethoden, die von der Stasi entwickelt worden sind, wie etwa der Schlafentzug, die Einzelhaft, die Wasserfolter, und andere Spezialbehandlungen, genauso zermürbend gewesen seien. Seine Anekdoten über Hohenschönhausen haben die eintönigen Zellenblöcke zum farbenprächtigen Leben erweckt, obwohl sich die Geschichte, die den größten Eindruck hinterlassen hatte, Meilen weit entfernt von diesem Ort abspielte. Dort, wo die Inhaftierten einst die ihnen zugestandenen dreißig Minuten Sonnenlicht auffingen, überwölbt von Backsteinen und Stacheldraht, nahm uns Vazquez kurz beiseite um uns von seinen Menschenrechtsaktivitäten in Kuba zu berichten, bevor er uns laufen ließ.
Ich verließ Hohenschönhausen bestens informiert über die Stasi-Methoden und beeindruckt vom Lebenslauf unseres Reiseführers, aber seltsamer Weise auch wesentlich unbewegter und unentsetzter als ich es bei irgendeinem anderen Besuch der Berliner Gedenkstätten gewesen bin. Das kam mir schon seltsam vor, denn meine Mitreisenden waren ziemlich erschüttert. Aber dann ging mir ein Licht auf: Sie waren keine Amerikaner.
Keiner weiß genau wie viele politische Häftlinge, im Laufe von über dreißig Jahren, in Hohenschönhausen eingekerkert gewesen sind, wohl aber handelt es sich um mehrere Tausende. Obwohl diese Zahl nach jedem Maßstab erschreckend hoch ist, stamme ich aus einem Land in dem es mehr Gefängnisinsassen gibt als irgendwo sonst auf der Welt. Während die Bevölkerungszahl der USA nur 5% der gesamten Weltbevölkerung ausmacht, sind 25% aller weltweit inhaftierten Menschen in Gefängnissen in den Vereinigten Staaten untergebracht – insgesamt 2.3 Millionen.
In Kalifornien, wo ich zu Hause bin, werden mehr Steuergelder für Strafanstalten ausgegeben als für die Hochschulen. Das Leben hinter Gittern gehört schon zu den Grundpfeilern der amerikanischen Volkskultur und findet daher Betrachtung in einer Vielzahl von Büchern, Fernsehserien, Filmen und sogar in der Musik.
An den Zuständen gemessen, die in Amerikas Haftanstalten herrschen, in denen die Strafgefangenen erschreckend oft Opfer von physischer Gewalt und sexuellem Missbrauch werden, sieht Hohenschönhausen beinah altertümlich gemütlich aus. Und, obwohl der Begriff "politischer Gefangener" eher selten im US-amerikanischen Sprachgebrauch vorkommt, zeugen die Rassenunterschiede (bei knapp 40% der Gefängnisinsassen werden Amerikaner afrikanischen Ursprungs sechs Mal häufiger zu Freiheitsstraffen verurteilt als Weiße) und die Tatsache, dass Schuldner wegen Zahlungsunfähigkeit eingesperrt werden können, davon, dass diese Bezeichnung aus dem ehemaligen Ostblock in den USA auch völlig angebracht wäre.
Während der S-Bahnfahrt zurück nach Berlin-West, wich die stalinistische Architektur im Laufe der Fahrt allmählich den Gropius-Bauten und Grünflächen, als wir die Stelle passierten, wo einst die Mauer zwei feindliche Staaten getrennt hatte. Der Himmel blieb unverändert grau, aber die Straßen hier waren von emsigen Berlinern belebt, die sich in der munteren Café-Szene tummelten, für die diese Stadt bekannt ist. Punk Rocker drehten sich ihre Zigaretten draußen vor Checkpoint Charlie. Unweit des Brandenburger Tors gönnten sich junge Hipster ein paar Ciders. Es gibt wohl nur wenige Städte in denen die Zeugnisse der Veränderung der modernen Geschichte des Westens offener ausgestellt und zugänglich sind als in Berlin.
Hohenschönhausen liefert den Beweis dafür, dass diese Stadt eine ganz andere geworden ist. Berlin ist eine Stadt, die, im Gegensatz zu meinem Heimatland, weniger von den Ketten ihrer Vergangenheit gefesselt, als von ihnen befreit worden zu sein scheint. Ein Sprachkünstler aus Kuba, der einst die Flucht aus Ostberlin über die Atlantik herbeigesehnt hatte, genießt jetzt seine Freiheit in Berlin und macht den Reiseführer durch die Zellenblöcke, wo er selber früher eingesessen hat! Das ist eine Art von Freiheit von der 2.3 Millionen Menschen jenseits des Atlantiks nur träumen können.

Source text - German Michael Balzer: Gastgeben ist seine Passion. Ein Portrait.
An die außergewöhnlichste Veranstaltung, die er jemals durchgeführt, gecatert und von A - Z organisiert hat, erinnert sich Michael Balzer, als sei es gestern gewesen. Es war der Geburtstag eines Industriellen, der mit 250 geladenen Gästen drei Tage lang auf einem Hofgut gefeiert hat. Ein in allen Facetten authentischer Hüttenabend mit DJ Ötzi bildete den Auftakt. Tag 2 wurde mit einem Mormonenbrunch eröffnet, an dem die Herren Hüte und Bärte trugen und die Damen Landkleider. Später am Tag wurde eine im Tabakblatt servierte Herrensuppe gereicht, für die Damen gab es eine Suppe mit extra aus England eingeflogenen Laura-Ashley-Rosen - die mit den üppigen Blüten. An Tag 3 wähnten sich die Gäste in einer detailgetreuen Kitzbühel-Nachbildung, und den Ausklang bildete ein Buffet in Form eines aus Cohiba-Zigarren geformten Zeppelins, der von der Decke hinab gelassen wurde, während Udo Jürgens live dazu sang. „Das war eine unglaubliche Feier, mit immer neuer Deko und stets wechselnden Stimmungen, in die ich meine Gäste versetzt habe. Bei diesem Fest war alles dabei - standing ovations und Gänsehaut inbegriffen“. Überhaupt erinnere er sich an jede einzelne seiner Veranstaltungen, betont Balzer, bis hin zu Speisenfolgen und Dekorationen - und das waren eine Menge, in all den Jahren. Wenn Balzer erzählt, funkeln die Augen, die Hände gestikulieren: „Ich liebe meinen Beruf“. Mit mehr Nachdruck, Energie und Freude, als er es tut, kann man diesen Satz nicht aussprechen. Das Schönste an seiner Gastgeberrolle? „Wenn die Gäste nach den Veranstaltungen Tränen in den Augen haben und mir vor Freude fast um den Hals fallen, das rührt mich jedes Mal sehr.“ Das schönste Lob, das er jemals bekommen hat? „Jemand hat mich mal als einen kreativen Wahnsinnigen, als Idealisten bezeichnet“. Michael Balzer remembers the most unusual event he ever arranged, organised from A to Z and catered for, as if it were yesterday. It was a birthday celebration for an industrialist, who, together with 250 invited guests, partied(2) for three whole days at a manorial estate. DJ Ötzi kicked off the event with a traditional (Austrian) Hüttenabend - i.e. a rustic country festival – authentic in every way. Day two was launched with a Mormon brunch, which the men attended in beards and hats with the ladies appearing in country costume. Later in the day a gentleman's broth(3) was served in tobacco leaves whilst the ladies enjoyed a soup garnished(4) with Laura-Ashley roses - those with the luscious petals - flown in specially from England. On the third day the guests found(5) themselves in a reproduction of Kitzbühel, accurate in every detail. A buffet in the form of Zeppelins made of Cohiba cigars and lowered from the ceiling to the accompaniment of Udo Jürgens' live singing brought the event to a grande finale. “That was an unbelievable bash with me shepherding my guests through constantly shifting moods, and the continually changing décor. This do had it all – including standing ovations and goose bumps(6)”. In fact, as Balzer emphasises, he remembers each and every one of his events right down to the decoration and the order of the menu – and there have been many throughout the years. Gesticulating with his hands, Balzer's eyes sparkle as he talks: “I love my profession!” No one else could articulate this sentence with more emphasis, energy and joy than he does. What's the nicest thing about his role as host? “When the guests have tears in their eyes after the event and almost fling their arms around me for joy; that gets me every time.” And the best compliment he ever received? “Somebody once called me a creative lunatic, an idealist.” Spot on!
Translator's Notes:
1. The Goose Bump Guarantor is a literal translation and is only just on the edge of being acceptable. I have been noticing a shift of emphasis in English with goose bumps being reserved more and more for the reaction to cold or horror whilst 'the hair on the back of one's neck standing up' is being used more often to describe the feeling implicitly referred to in this article. Maybe it would be best to find another title altogether – maybe 'The Earl of Entertainment' or something like that.
2. I have used italics for particularly colloquial terms such as might be used in a magazine article, especially in an article of this sort that wants to sound up-beat and 'with it'
3. Changed to 'broth' avoid the repetition of 'soup' in close succession and because it somehow sounds more masculine.
4. My assumption is that the soup was garnished with roses rather than being made of them – can you eat roses?
5. The German 'wähnten' seems to imply that the guest were not really at a reconstruction of Kitzbühel, whereas it is clear from the text that they really did find themselves in such a mock-up.

Source text - German Es ist noch nicht allzu lange her, da haben die Menschen auf diesem Planeten noch ohne den Verbund von Rechnernetzwerken gelebt. Seit der Erschaffung und Weiterentwicklung der Vernetzung von autonomen Systemen in Form des Internets hat sich die Menschheit so radikal schnell verändert, wie noch nie im Laufe der Geschichte. Heute wissen wir Dinge, von denen die Generation unserer Eltern nicht einmal zu träumen gewagt hat. Wir leben in hashtag-Twittergesellschaften, in denen Menschen Informationen nicht nur in Sekunden übermitteln, sondern auch weltweit verbreiten können. Ich erwische mich häufig dabei, wie ich wehmütig an die Zeiten zurückdenke, als man noch vermehrt Briefe anstatt e-mails geschrieben hat und zu seinen Freunden einfach hingefahren ist, anstatt ihnen zu texten. Mit jeder neuen Innovation in Sachen high-technology und social-media-Ausbau, erhöht sich scheinbar auch die Verschlackung der Zwischenmenschlichkeit, die Hand in Hand geht mit dem freiwillig bereitgestellten Raub der Privatsphäre.
Der deutsche Soziologe Harald Welzer sieht unsere modernen Gesellschaften nicht nur auf dem Weg in einen neuen Totalitarismus, sondern auch in einen wohl zunächst einmal gewaltlosen aber nichtsdestotrotz schleichenden Wechsel der Herrschaftsform, in dem soziale Plattformen ebenso wie Konzerne wie Google und Co. langsam die Macht übernehmen. Als Totalitarismusforscher weiß Welzer, dass in Diktaturen immer zunächst einmal die Privatheit sowie alles was geheim und verborgen ist abgeschafft wird, um die Menschen längerfristig besser kontrollieren zu können. Google und Co. arbeiten schon seit Jahren an eben dieser Abschaffung des Privaten und kontrollieren auf diese Art und Weise mit unserer Zustimmung bereits mehr als nur die Datenberge im Internet, sondern auch unser privates Leben. Damit ermöglichen wir ihnen, neue Normen und Werte zu schaffen – uns vorzugeben, was normal und angebracht ist, was hip, was uncool, was schön, was hässlich - was erstrebenswert ist und was nicht.
In den letzten Wochen und Monaten musste ich meine Sichtweise auf diese neue, digitale Welt dennoch ein wenig relativieren, denn mir ist aufgefallen, dass die Konservierung von Daten im Web (so gefährlich sie auf der einen Seite auch sein mag) einer ganz anderen Entwicklung entgegensteuert – der Zerstörung von Daten. Und nicht nur dieser, sondern auch der Zerstörung unserer Erinnerung – der Auslöschung des geschichtlichen Gedächtnisses. Mit Buchverbrennungen kann man den heutigen selbsternannten Hochkulturen nicht mehr einschüchternd drohen.
Im letzten Monat bin ich nach Potsdam gezogen – eine wunderschöne Stadt, die auf eleganteste Art und Weise das achtzehnte mit dem einundzwanzigsten Jahrhundert verbindet. Sie beherbergt ein UNESCO Weltkulturerbe neben dem nächsten. Das fällt einem besonders ins Auge, wenn man jeden Morgen mit dem Fahrrad an der Parkanlagen Sanssouci vorbeiradelt und parallel in den Nachrichten mitverfolgen muss, wie die ISIS an anderen, aber nicht allzu weit entfernten Orten der Welt, das Kulturerbe der Menschheit zerstört. Auch, wenn dieser kulturelle Vandalismus durch nichts beschönigt werden kann, so werden die Bilder der Bauten und Landschaften vergangener Tage so zumindest im Internet auf ewig konserviert bleiben, auch und gerade wenn an ihrem Ursprungsort nur noch Asche und Schutt verblieben sind. Genau aus diesem Grunde hat sich mir die Tage ein ganz neuer, eigentlich schöner Gedanken aufgedrängt: The Transnational wird immer eine kleine Nische in dieser Welt finden: Unsere Worte werden bestehen bleiben. Sie sind resistent gegen die Zerstörung von außen, wie ein Antikörper, denn The Transnational segelt als e-book durch die Meere des Internets.
Einige tragen ihn als file auf ihrem Memory Stick mit sich herum oder er steht im digitalen Buchregal, an das keiner mit Hammer und Bagger ran kann. Und selbst wenn sich die Wut der Hacker irgendwann auf die Literatur richten sollte, so kann niemand vermeiden, dass der ein oder andere vielleicht noch seinen unangetasteten Memory Stick oder seinen External Drive irgendwo rumfliegen hat, auf dem The Transnational schlummert, bis ihn wieder jemand entdeckt. Die Worte der Autoren des Transnational sind konserviert. Keine Buchverbrennung, keine ISIS kann ihnen etwas anhaben. Sie sind gemeißelt in die Fugen des World Wide Web und ziehen ihre Wege so lange Menschen ihnen lauschen, sie lesen, teilen und kommentieren.
Die Literatur, als eine der ältesten Errungenschaften der Menschheit hat einen Weg gefunden zu überleben. Die Moderne schenkt ihr die Grundlage und ihr schenkt ihr dieses Leben. In dieser Ausgabe vereinen sich 38 Autoren und kommentieren das Leben, geben uns Einblick in ihre Sichtweisen und machen Aufmerksam auf Dinge, die sie bewegen und die vielleicht auch andere bewegen könnten oder sollten. Sie geben uns somit ein Stück Ewigkeit. Wir können diesen Stimmen zustimmen oder gegenargumentieren, eigene Gedanken formulieren oder die bereits bestehenden Gedanken ergänzen – all das, aber wir können sie nicht vernichten; wir können sie nicht dem Erdboden gleich machen. Wir schaffen unser eigenes Kulturerbe aus Worten, Sätzen und Meinungen.

Translation - English It's not so long ago that the people on this planet lived their lives without being connected via computer networks. Since the creation and development of a network of autonomous systems in the form of the Internet, humanity has changed faster and more radically than ever before in the course of history. We know things today that our parent's generation never even dared dream of. We live in hash-tag Twitter societies in which people not only transmit information in mere seconds, but can also disseminate it around the world. I often catch myself thinking back nostalgically to the days when people still wrote more letters than emails and simply drove over to see their friends rather than texting them. Every innovation relating to the further expansion of high-tech' social media seems to be accompanied by the increasing scorification of the human collective, which goes hand-in-hand with the rape of the private sphere to which we give our willing consent.
According to German Sociologist Harald Welzer, our modern societies are not only heading towards a new totalitarianism, but are also in the throes of an, as yet peaceful, revolution in the prevailing form of rule in which social platforms and corporations, such as Google and Co., are gradually assuming power. As a student of totalitarianism, Welzer knows that, in order to be better able to control people in the longer term, the first things to be dispensed with under any dictatorship are the private sphere along with all things secret and hidden. Google and their ilk have already been working towards this abolition privacy for many years, and already control not just the mountains of data within the Internet but also, with our acquiescence, our private lives. We empower them to create new standards and values – to dictate to us what is normal and appropriate, what is cool or uncool, what is beautiful and what is ugly – what is desirable and what is not.
Yet, over the past few weeks and months I have had to relativise the way I view this new digital world to some extent. For it strikes me that, as dangerous as it may be on the one hand, the retention of online data counteracts a radically different development – the destruction not only of data, but also of our collective memory – the erasure of the historical record. The upshot is that burning books no longer poses the same threat to today's self-proclaimed advanced civilisations as it once did.
During the past month I've relocated to Potsdam, a beautiful town with more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than you can shake a stick at, which somehow manages to seamlessly connect the eighteenth and twenty-first centuries. Just how well it does so becomes obvious when one takes a leisurely bike ride passed the Sanssouci Palace gardens every morning whilst simultaneously keeping abreast of how ISIS is systematically annihilating the common heritage of humanity in other, but not too distant, parts of the world. Yet, the very fact that such a heinous act of cultural vandalism inevitably leaves a trace in the digital world ensures the ultimate survival of, at least, images of the sites in question, even if the physical remains are reduced to dust and rubble. As long as mankind is able to read the digital record, nothing it contains can be lost forever. I love the idea that The Transnational – and your contributions to it – will always have a niche of their own within this nebulous universe of computers, servers, external drives, and social media: we shall persist – and you shall persist. Our words will remain. Much like some antibody, they are immune to destruction by outside forces because The Transnational is swimming through the vast ocean of data that is the Internet in the form of an e-book.
Some carry it around as a file on a memory stick. Others stow it away on some digital bookshelf. Either way it is safe from jackhammers and wrecking balls. And even if the hacker community should ever turn its destructive gaze on literature, somebody somewhere will always have a pristine copy of The Transnational on some form of removable media, just waiting to be rediscovered. The words of contributors to The Transnational will survive – immune to book burnings; impervious to ISIS. They are chiselled into the very fabric of the Internet and will continue their 'careers' for as long as anyone cares to read them, listen to them, share them or comment on them. So literature, one of man's earliest achievements, has found a way to survive. Modernity itself furnishes it with the means to do so, but it is you, the contributors, who give it life.
In this edition, 38 authors come together to comment on life, to allow us a glimpse into their various mind sets, and to draw our attention to the things that move them as individuals and which may, or perhaps ought to, move others. Thus, they gift to us a piece of eternity. We may agree or disagree with these utterances. We may formulate our own thoughts on the issues in question or we may expand upon existing ideas – we can do all of that, but no one can destroy them. They cannot be eradicated. We are in the process of creating our own cultural heritage in words, sentences, and opinions.

German to English: Excerpt from Daimon Humanitatis. Das Ende der Sprachlosigkeit. by Paul Panter, The Transnational Vol. 3 General field: Art/Literary
Source text - German Worauf basiert nun der grassierende Linksidiotismus? Seine Idee ist bestechend einfach und wird seit den 1968ern, als die Söhne und Töchter des höheren Gelangweiltseins ihr Berufsbild im Krawallmachen entdeckten, nach folgendem Schema praktiziert: nicht die Kranken sind zu therapieren, sondern die Gesellschaft, die vorgeblich krank macht. Und so warfen sich die Derangierten in die Arztkittel und vertauschten frech die Rollen. Bis heute hat es eine Unzahl dieser als Therapeuten getarnter Pflegebedürftiger in höchste politische Ämter gebracht. Das war ihr Marsch durch die Institutionen. Felix Krull im Vergleich war da nur ein Hotellaufbursche. Was bedeutet das konkret? Nachdem das geistige Immunsystem der Gesellschaft dem Dauerfeuer aus allen Rohren der gleichlaufenden Medienmaschine über Jahrzehnte der Aushöhlung anheim fiel, wird mit inzwischen alternierter Phraseologie (aus der Bourgeoisie wurde der "weiße alte Mann") der Glaube an die 46 Geschlechter entfacht, Ampelmännchen zu Zeitgeistfeinden von Ampelfrauchen gemacht, ein Vermögen der Voodoo-Genderforschung in den Rachen geworfen und bis in die Kindergärten hinein der Nachwuchs hypersexualisiert, ironischerweise von genau denen, die in enger Tradition mit den Lautsprechern der Pädophilie stehen. Es ist die Schlacht um Begriffe und Deutungen, die der Linksidiotismus mit Bravour zu führen versteht, es sind seine giftigen Euphemismen, die meisterhaften Empörungsinszenierungen, die magnetisierend wirken, und die die jeder Orientierung verlustig gegangenen Menschen in den Schlund des allumfassenden, alles kontrollierenden und allwissenden Staates ziehen, des Staates, den alle diese Söhne und Töchter heute besetzen, da ihr glänzendes Auskommen genau darin besteht, diesen Staat samaritisch zu verkörpern als Wohltäter der Bedürftigen und Heiler der Hilflosen. So schleicht sich dieser falsche Staat mit seinen falschen Ärzten in alles, ins Öffentliche wie ins Private. Es verbleibt nur noch gelegentlich das Mundtotmachen einer kleinen Gegnerschaft, das Einschüchtern aller, die nicht daran glauben wollen, die noch tapfer dem Prinzip der Selbstverantwortung folgen. Hier wird im Schnellverfahren jeder bis in seine Existenz hinein mit ideologischen Fallbeilen guillotiniert. Hemmungslos verschlingt der falsche Leviathan die Demokratie samt freier Marktwirtschaft. Der Linksidiotismus ist der Bluthund auf der Suche nach "Opfern", die seiner Hilfe bedürfen. Je mehr er aus den kleinsten Ritzen an "Not und Elend", "Kälte und Ausbeutung" herauszudestillieren versteht, desto mehr Hilfskräfte müssen rekrutiert werden, um den "Opfern" beizustehen. Die Monstranz der Toleranz als Mittel neue Opfer zu generieren wird von den Hohenpriestern des Linksidiotismus durch die Gassen getragen und täglich besungen. Nur weht nun plötzlich ein Wind aus der Wüste, und kündet von alter Zeit. In Gestalt eines armen Kindleins stand er vor den Toren und lässt sich vom Linksidiotismus füttern und umsorgen, behüten und grossziehen, so als wäre es sein ureigener Nachwuchs. Es ist das unschuldig lächelnde Kind, das von fern kam und ihm am Ende den Garaus bereiten wird.
Translation - English The loony left - what's it all about? The basic concept, en vogue since 1968 when the sons and daughters of the bored-oisie found their vocation in hooliganism, seems convincingly simple and goes like this: it's not the sick who need treatment but rather the society that ostensibly makes them ill. And so the misfits promptly donned white coats and insolently switched roles. Since then a whole host of these patients have managed to penetrate to the highest echelons of power cleverly disguised as therapists: their own version of Dutschke's 'march through the institutions'. Felix Krull was a mere errand boy by comparison.
So what does it all mean in practice? Now that society's psychological immune system has succumbed, undermined by the media machine’s decades-long, multi-barrelled, sustained-fire assault, a new form of doublespeak (not "a member of the bourgeoisie" but "average white male") is igniting a belief in the 46 genders, making the little traffic light man into the Zeitgeist-enemy of the wee traffic-light wifie, blowing a fortune on voodoo gender research, and hyper-sexualising kids right down to Kindergarten age. Ironically enough, this is all been done by those very people who have traditionally stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the most vocal advocates of paedophilia.
But it's in the battle of terminology that the loony left is able to fight with such bravura. It's their insidious euphemisms and masterly displays of outrage that have such a mesmerising effect and drag the disoriented masses into the maw of the all-encompassing, all-controlling, and all-knowing state, that very state now garrisoned by these same sons and daughters. After all, their illustrious careers derive precisely from their Samaritan-esque embodiment of the state, masquerading as the benefactors of the needy and healers of the helpless.
And so it is that this false state, with its counterfeit doctors, infiltrates every sphere of public and private life. All that remains to be done is to silence a few dissenters, to intimidate and browbeat all the non-believers, who bravely continue to cling to the principle of personal responsibility. All hounded to their very souls in summary hearings and dispatched under the ideological guillotines, while, with wanton abandon, this treacherous Leviathan gobbles down democracy along with the free market economy. The loony left is the bloodhound snuffling out the "victims" in need of its aid. The more it learns how to distil "hardship and helplessness", "cold indifference and exploitation" from the tiniest of scratches, the more aid workers need to be recruited to provide succour to the "victims". The monstrance of tolerance is extolled by the high priests of the loony left and borne aloft through the streets as a means of creating ever more victims.
Only, now a sudden breeze blows in from the desert, bearing tidings of long ago. Standing outside the gates in the form of an impoverished child it laps up the nourishment and care lavished on it by the loony left that protects it and raises it as if it were the fruit of its own loins. It's the innocently smiling child that came from afar and will one day deal it the death blow.

“Yes,” I answered(2), “the river that you've just seen is called the Rhine hereabouts: the woods on the right are known as the Reichswald; and now we're coming to Cleves.”
“Are you from here?”
“No.” He was getting on my nerves; all night he had been driving me nuts with his reedy sixth-former voice; he'd been telling me how he'd secretly read Brecht, Tucholsky, Walter Benjamin as well as Proust and Karl Kraus: that he planned to study sociology and theology, and would help to bring about a new social order in Germany. And as we stopped at Nijmegen just as the dawn was breaking and someone said we'd soon be coming to the German border, he had nervously asked around if anyone would swap some thread for a couple of cigarette ends; and when no one had responded I had offered to rip off my collar patches – or flashes as I believe they were called – and turn them into dark green thread. I took off my tunic and watched him as he carefully removed them with a piece of tin before picking them apart and then actually beginning to stitch the officer cadet braiding around his epaulettes. I asked him whether I could best attribute his sewing to the influence of Brecht, Tucholsky, Benjamin or Karl Kraus, or whether it was the unconfessed influence of Jünger that caused him to take up the Tom Thumb dagger(3) to restore his rank. He had blushed and said that he was through with Jünger, had completely finished with him. Now, as we pulled into Cleves, he interrupted his sewing and crouched next to me, Tom Thumb dagger in hand.
“Cleves brings nothing to mind,” he said, “nothing at all. How about you?”
“Yes,” I answered, “Lohengrin, the margarine brand 'Swan in the Blue Riband' and Anne of Cleves, one of the wives of Henry the eighth.”
“Lohengrin!” he answered, “of course – but we ate 'Sanella' at home. Don't you want the cigarette butts?”
“No.” I said, “keep them for your Dad. I hope he thumps your ear when you turn up at the house with those braids on your shoulders.”
“You don't understand it:” he said, “Prussia, Kleist, Frankfurt/Oder, Potsdam, Prince von Homberg, Berlin.”
“Well,” I said, “I believe Cleves was already Prussian pretty early on – and somewhere over there on the other side of the Rhine there's a little town called Wesel”.
“God, yes!” he said, “Schill – of course.”
“The Prussians never really made it over the Rhine;” I went on, “they only ever established two bridgeheads: Bonn and Koblenz.”
“Prussia”, he said.
“Blomberg”, I answered. “Do you need any more thread?” He reddened and fell silent.
Translator's Notes:
1. Böll's phrase 'der kleine' could be rendered literally as 'the little one' or perhaps as 'the little chap/bloke/fellow etc. However it is clear from the further context that it is the person's inexperience and unperturbed idealism that stands in stark contrast to the narrator's more jaded frame of mind, so I have used 'youngster' in the English rendition to emphasise this difference.
2. Böll's prose at this point in the story is fairly repetitive and his frequent use of 'sagte ich', 'sagte er' etc., whilst it works fairly well in German, does seem more than a little bland if translated literally as 'I said', 'he said' etc., in the English rendition. I have therefore taken the liberty of varying it slightly when it seemed appropriate to do so. This is a matter of taste and is the sort of thing that I would ordinarily discuss with a living author or alternatively with the commissioning editor.
3. Böll coins a whimsical phrase here to refer to the needle wielded by his idealistic young comrade. His 'des Däumerlings Waffe' – literally 'Tom Thumb's-' or perhaps 'Thumbling's weapon' is in keeping with the military setting and the youthful keenness of his companion's ridiculous wish to present himself at home in all of his military splendour, but it seems slightly forced in English. I think 'Tom Thumb's dagger' rolls off the tongue with slightly more ease.

Source text - German Vor ein paar Tagen ist in meinem Haus, hier in der Heide, ein Mensch gestorben. Ich kannte ihn nicht, nie zuvor war er mir begegnet, und aus seinem Leben erfuhr ich nur, was er im Fieber erzählte, denn er kam schon als Kranker zu mir. Beinahe zwei Wochen lag er in diesem Raum, phantasierte, verfiel und erkämpfte sich unter Schmerzen und wirren Träumen seinen mühsamen Tod. Ich pflegte ihn, doch es gelang mir nicht, ihn zu retten. Gestern habe ich ihn begraben.
Er liegt unter einem Hügel, der sich aus der Ebene erhebt und der bewachsen ist mit Farren, Anemonen und Rispengras. Das Grab schaufelte ich so, daß es der Richtung nach längs des Weges liegt, der durch die Heide läuft, von Westen nach Osten. Sein Haupt bettete ich nach Sonnenuntergang, wie er es gewünscht hatte, indem er sagte, er wolle dem Morgen entgegensehen.
Es war dies weder mein erstes Begräbnis noch der erste Mensch, den ich sterben sah, ohne ihm helfen zu können. Denn wir sind alte Rivalen: der Tod und ich.
Medizinisch gesehen handelte es ich um den letalen Ausgang einer akuten Infektionskrankheit: Typhus. Die Widerstandsfähigkeit gegen diese Krankheit ist individuell sehr verschieden, es gibt Menschen, die, wenn sie die primäre Krankheit eben noch überstehen, lebenslangem Siechtum verfallen durch folgende Leiden wie Lungen-, Herzmuskel- oder Knochenmarkentzündung, und es gibt andere, die Typhusbakterien in Mengen beherbergen, ohne selbst auch nur zu erkranken.
Der 36jährige Robin Guiscard – ich entnehme Alter und Namen den Dokumenten des Verstorbenen – gehörte nicht zu diesen. Von schlechtem Allgemeinbefinden, verbraucht und müde, wäre sein Fall in die Rubrik jener letalen 12 bis 15 Prozent einzutragen, welche die Statistik als Grenzforderung des Todes erkannt hat. Robin Guiscard starb. Er starb trotz meiner vielfachen Versuche, sein Leben zu bewahren, trotz Chinin und Antipyrin, trotz äußerster Sauberkeit und aller Diäten, trotz meiner Devotion vor den überkommenden Heilmethoden der Literatur. Er starb zuletzt, nachdem er durch Tage in einem entsetzlichen Ringen um die Erhaltung seines Lebens gelegen war, ohne Protest, fast wie zufrieden mit einem Ausweg, der sich für ihn ergeben hatte, beinahe glücklich, in der Tat beruhigt.
Translation - English A few days ago a person died in my house, here on the heath. I did not know him, had never met him before, and of his life's story I only gathered as much as he blurted out in his delirium, as he had already been sick when he came to me. He lay in this room for nearly two weeks, fantasising, declining and fighting his way through pain and confused dreams to his laborious death. I nursed him but I could not save him. I buried him yesterday.
He is lying under a hillock rising out of the plain covered in ferns, anenomes and meadow-grass. I dug the grave parallel with the track that cuts across the heath from East to West. In accordance with his wishes I positioned his head towards the sinking sun; he had said he wanted to lie facing the morning.
This was neither my first burial nor the first time I had seen a person die without being able to help him. For we are old rivals; death and I.
From the medical perspective it was the fatal result of an acute contagion: typhus. The ability to survive this illness is individually highly variable. There are those who, having only just survived the primary infection, subsequently succumb to chronic complications like inflammations of the lungs, heart, or bone marrow; and others who harbour millions of typhus bacteria without themselves ever falling ill.
The 36 year old Robin Guiscard – whose name and age I gleaned from his documentation – was not one of these. Of feeble constitution, worn out and tired, his belongs in the category of the 12 to 15 percent of fatal cases, recognised statistically as death's minimum toll. Robin Guiscard died. He died in spite of my many attempts to preserve his life; despite quinine and antipyrin; regardless of spotless hygiene and all the diets; despite my genuflection(1) before the traditional remedies of the medical literature. He died in the end, after having lain for days in an appalling struggle for his life, without protest, almost at peace with the way out that had opened up for him, almost happy; calm in fact.

1. The use of the German word 'Devotion' conjures up a feeling of quasi religious reverence for the traditional medical literature. I might have rendering this as 'prostration' or 'kowtowing' but these seemed a bit strong.

„Der Herr Geheimrat ißt, was ihm schmeckt“, sagte Frau Kunkel nach reiflicher Überlegung.
Das neue Dienstmädchen verteilte die Mundtücher, kniff ein Auge zu, das getroffene Arrangement zu überprüfen, und wollte sich entfernen.
„Einen Augenblick noch!“ meinte Frau Kunkel. „Mein Vater, Gott hab' ihn selig, pflegte zu sagen: 'Auch wer morgens dreißig Schweine kauft, kann mittags nur ein Kotelett essen.' Merken Sie sich das für Ihren ferneren Lebensweg! Ich glaube kaum, daß Sie sehr lange bei uns bleiben werden.“
„Wenn zwei Personen dasselbe denken, darf man sich etwas wünschen“, sagte Isolde verträumt.
„Ich bin keine Person!“ rief die Hausdame. Das Taftkleid zitterte.
Dann knallte die Tür.
Frau Kunkel zuckte zusammen und war allein. - Was mochte sich Isolde gewünscht haben? Es war nicht auszudenken!
Das Gebäude, von dessen Speisezimmer soeben die Rede war, liegt an jener alten, ehrwürdigen Allee, die von Halensee nach Hundekehle führt. Jedem, der die Straße auch nur einigermaßen kennt, wird die Villa aufgefallen sein. Nicht weil sie größer wäre, noch feuervergoldeter und schwungvoller als die anderen.
Sie fällt dadurch auf, daß man sie überhaupt nicht sieht.
Man blickt durch das zweihundert Meter lange Schmiedegitter in einen verschneiten Wald, der jegliche Aussage verweigert. Wenn man vor dem von ergrauten Steinsäulen flankierten Tore steht, sieht man den breiten Fahrweg und dort, wo er nach rechts abbiegt, ein schmuckloses, freundliches Gebäude: das Gesindehaus.
Hier wohnen die Dienstmädchen, die Köchin, der Chauffeur und die Gärtnersleute. Die Villa selber, die toten Tennisplätze, der erfrorene Teich, die wohltemperierten Treibhäuser, die unterm Schnee schlafenden Gärten und Wiesen bleiben unsichtbar.

“Don't make so much noise!” said Mrs. Kunkel, the housekeeper. “You're meant to be setting the table, not giving a concert”.
Isolde, the new maid, smiled thinly.
Mrs Kunkel's taffeta dress rustled. She march up and down the front. She nudged a plate into position and plucked at a spoon. “Beef and noodles Yesterday;” remarked Isolde dolefully, “haricot beans and sausages today. You'd think a millionaire would have a more refined appetite.”
“His honour(1) eats whatever he likes”, said Mrs Kunkel after much consideration.
The new maid distributed the napkins, shut one eye to check the arrangement, and made to leave.
“Just a moment!” said Mrs Kunkel. “My father, God rest his soul, used to say: 'even them as buy thirty pigs in the morning, can only eat one chop for lunch'. Bear that in mind as you go through life. I hardly believe you'll be with us much longer”.
“When two people think the exact same thing you can make a wish”, said Isolde dreamily.
“I am not people!” the housekeeper bellowed. The taffeta dress quivered.
Then the door slammed.
Mrs Kunkel winced and stood alone. What might Isolde have wished for? It did not bear thinking about!
The building, the dining room of which was the scene of the foregoing discussion, is situated on that respectable old avenue that leads from Halensee to Hundekehle. Anyone, even slightly acquainted with the street, will have noticed the villa. Not because it is bigger or has more panache or is more gilt edged than the others.
It is noticeable in as much as one does not see it at all.
One peers through the two hundred meter long wrought iron fence into a snowy forest that provides no clues whatsoever. Standing in front of the gate, flanked as it is by faded stone pillars, one sees a broad driveway and there, where it curves round to the right, a plain, friendly building: the servants' quarters.
The maids, the cook, the chauffeur and the gardeners all live here. The villa itself, the deserted(2) tennis courts, the frozen pond, the carefully heated(3) greenhouses, the gardens under their blanket of snow and the meadows, remain hidden from view.
Translator's Notes:
1. The actual translation of Geheimrat is privy councillor, however for the past several hundred years it has been used as a non specific honorific title with no English equivalent. The plot of this novel revolves around the fact that the Geheimrat in question is a millionaire, not that he bears this particular honorific title. I have therefore used 'his honour' as a similarly non specific title but other possibilities certainly exist.
2. The German original referred to 'dead tennis courts' but that seems a bit gloomier and more final in English than I think was the author's intention.
3. The German wohltemperiert has overtones of being finely tuned or carefully adjusted, but with the exception of those familiar with J.S. Bach's Das Wohltemperierte Klavier, most English readers would probably miss the significance of this, which is why I opted for the simpler 'carefully heated'.

Wie es dazu kam – das freilich kann ich nicht in jedem Traum wiederholen. Es ist eine zu lange Geschichte. Doch einmal muß sie erzählt werden. Inzwischen hat sich ja so viel geändert da unten in Ungarn. Vielleicht hat Piroschka selbst wieder eine Piroschka, die heute so alt ist, wie sie damals gewesen ist. Ich darf es jetzt erzählen – alles! Ganz von Anfang an. - So hat es begonnen:
Die Julisonne glühte, und Reiher stiegen aus dem Schilf zu dem fast schmerzhaft leuchtenden Himmelsgewölbe auf. Die 'Kommilitonen' – ich haßte dieses gespreizte Wort – saßen drunten im Speisesaal und spielten Skat, weil einer aus seinem Reiseführer vorgelesen hatte, die Stromstrecke sei hier auf einige Hundert Kilometer ziemlich langweilig. Langweilig – diese Landschaft des letzten Schöpfungstages: mit Himmel, Wasser, Schilf und Vogelschwingen …
Wir lagen auf Liegestühlen an Deck, die ziemlich dicht beieinander standen. Am Bug saßen auf Klapphockern deutsche Touristen, eine kleine Reisegesellschaft. Ihre männlichen Teilnehmer trugen hellblaue, etwas verschrumpelte Leinenjacketts. Leicht gezogen und hitzematt begann die Gesellschaft zu singen: 'Warum ist es am Rhein so schön?'
Das verdroß mich. Ich wollte nicht wissen, warum es am Rhein so schön sei, solange ich auf der Donau fuhr. Aus meiner halb sitzenden Stellung legte ich mich lang zurück – der Liegestuhl war auf die unterste Kerbe eingestellt -, um nur noch die blaue Unendlichkeit über mir zu haben. Es war aber noch etwas anderes über mir. Ein spitzer, modischer Damenabsatz stieß mich ein wenig gegen den Hinterkopf. Ich sagte: „Pardon“, obwohl ich an diesem Zwischenfall eigentlich unschuldig war, wandte meinen Kopf leicht nach oben und sah ein verwirrend anmutiges Bein, das eilig zurückgezogen wurde.
Angesichts der Internationalität des Reisepublikums – man hörte Englisch, Ungarisch, Tschechisch außer der Sprache der Rheinsüchtigen Landsleute – kam mir mein Ausdruck vorzüglich gewählt vor. Ich dachte an die Ratschläge, die Vater mir beim Abschied gegeben hatte: im Ausland die Mitte des Verhaltens, gleich entfernt von Anmaßung und Servilität, zu wahren. Das anmutige Bein hatte zwar nicht geantwortet, aber es würde meine gebildete Entschuldigung verstanden haben. Die Bugbesatzung stimmte 'Zu Mantua in Banden' an. Das hatte noch mehr Strophen als die Rheinfrage. Ach Gott, wie singt ihr schlecht!

How it got to that – that, of course, is something that I cannot repeat in every dream. The story is too long. And yet, it has to be told at some point. So much has changed down in Hungary in the meantime. Piroschka might have her own little Piroschka these days, about the same age now, as she herself was at that time. Now I can tell it – everything! Right from the start. This is how it began:
The July sun was beating down, while herons ascended from the reeds towards the almost painfully luminous canopy that was the sky. My fellow 'scholars' – I hated that pompous word – were sitting in the mess below decks playing cards, because one of them had read aloud from his tourist guide that this stretch of river was pretty boring for the next few hundred kilometres. Boring! This landscape, minted on the final day of creation(1): with sky, water, reeds and bird wings ...
We were lounging on deck in closely packed deckchairs. A group of German tourists, travelling together, were sitting on folding chairs at the prow, the men in light blue, crumpled linen jackets. Wilting in the heat, the group lapsed into a slow, lingering rendition of: 'Why is it so Beautiful on the Rhine?'
That annoyed me. As long as I was sailing down the Danube I had no wish to know why it was so beautiful on the Rhine. From my half sitting position I leaned right back – the deckchair was set at the lowest notch -, so that I would have nothing but blue infinity above me. But there was something else over me. I was prodded lightly in the back of the head by a pointy, fashionably high stiletto heel. “Pardon”, I said, although the incident involved no fault on my part, tilted my head slightly and glimpsed a disconcertingly graceful leg that was quickly pulled back.
My expression, I thought, seemed particularly well chosen, given the international makeup of the travelling public – one could hear English, Hungarian and Czech as well as the language of my Rhine-addicted landsmen. I remembered the advice my father had given me at our parting: when abroad, always seek the middle road between arrogance and servility. True enough the graceful leg had declined to respond, but it will certainly have understood my erudite apology. The crew in the prow launched into 'Off to Mantua with the Gang'. That had even more verses than the Rhine question. God! Your singing is awful!

1. To render this as 'minted on the final day of creation' might seem to be taking a bit of a liberty, but a literal translation of the German – this landscape of the last creation day – seems too clumsy in English, however well it rolls off the tongue in German.

Obschon ich seit einer Woche in Lissabon war, hatte ich mich noch immer nicht an das sorglose Licht dieser Stadt gewöhnt. In den Ländern, aus denen ich kam, lagen die Städte nachts schwarz da wie Kohlengruben, und eine Laterne in der Dunkelheit war gefährlicher als die Pest im Mittelalter. Ich kam aus dem Europa des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts.
Das Schiff war ein Passagierdampfer, der beladen wurde. Ich wußte, daß es am nächsten Abend abgehen sollte. Im harten Schein der nackten elektrischen Birnen wurden Ladungen von Fleisch, Fisch, Konserven, Brot und Gemüse verstaut; Arbeiter schleppten Gepäck an Bord, und ein Kran schwang, Kisten und Ballen so lautlos herauf, als wären sie ohne Gewicht. Das Schiff rüstete sich zur Fahrt, als wäre es eine Arche zur Zeit der Sintflut. Es war eine Arche. Jedes Schiff, das in diesen Monaten des Jahres 1942 Europa verließ, war eine Arche. Er mußte verbluten im Gestrüpp der verweigerten Ein- und Ausreisevisen, der unerreichbaren Arbeits- und Aufenthaltsbewilligungen, der Internierungslager, der Bürokratie, der Einsamkeit, der Fremde und der entsetzlichen allgemeinen Gleichgültigkeit gegen das Schicksal des einzelnen, die stets die Folge von Krieg, Angst und Not ist. Der Mensch war um diese Zeit nichts mehr; ein gültiger Paß alles.
Ich war nachmittags im Kasino von Estoril gewesen, um zu spielen. Ich besaß noch einen guten Anzug, und man hatte mich hineingelassen. Es war ein letzter, verzweifelter Versuch gewesen, das Schicksal zu bestechen. Unsere portugiesische Aufenthaltserlaubnis lief in wenigen Tagen ab, und Ruth und ich hatten keine anderen Visa. Translation - English I stared at the ship. Gaudily lit up, it was lying some way off the quay, in the river Tejo. Although I had been in Lisbon for a week, I still was not used to the carefree light of this city. The towns in the countries from which I had come were as black as mine shafts at nights, and a lamp in the dark was more dangerous than the plague in the Middle Ages. I had come from twentieth century Europe.
The ship was a passenger steamer that was being loaded up. I knew that it was supposed to depart on the following evening. A cargo of meat, fish, tinned foods, bread and vegetables was being stowed under the stark glare of naked electric lights. Workers were carrying luggage on board and a crane hoisted crates and bales as quietly as if they were weightless. The ship was preparing for its voyage as if it were an ark at the time of the Biblical flood. It was an ark. Every ship that set off from Europe during these months in the year 1942 was an ark. Mount Ararat was America and the waters were rising daily. Germany and Austria had already been submerged for a long time and in Poland and Prague the flood was knee-deep; Amsterdam, Brussels, Copenhagen, Oslo and Paris had already sunk in it; Italy's towns stank of it, and Spain was no longer safe. The coast of Portugal was the last haven for the refugees, for whom justice, liberty and tolerance meant more than home and livelihood. Anyone who could not reach America, the promised land, from here, was lost. He would bleed dry in the tangle of refused entry and exit visas, unattainable work and residence permits, internment camps, bureaucracy, loneliness, alienation(1) and the appalling general indifference to the fate of the individual, which always follows in the wake of war, fear and adversity. At that time a human being meant nothing; a valid passport everything.
I had been gambling at the Casino in Estoril that afternoon. I still owned a decent suit and they had let me in. It had been a final desperate attempt to bribe fate. Our Portuguese residents' permits would elapse a few days later and Ruth and I had no other visas. Back in France, the ship now at anchor in the Tejo, was the last with which we had hoped to reach New York; but it had been booked up for months and, apart from American entry visas, we also lacked the three hundred dollar fare. I had at least tried to get the money in the only way still possible here – gambling. It was senseless; even if I had won, it would still have taken a miracle to get aboard the ship. Yet on the run, in desperation and danger, you learn to believe in miracles; you would not survive if you did not.
Of the sixty two dollars we had still owned, I had lost fifty six.

1. Alienation is not the correct translation for die Fremde, which in the current context could perhaps be translated as 'the unknown'. To use that translation in this sentence however would break up the flow and 'alienation' works very well rhythmically and fits with the context.

Am Abend des 20. Oktober 1791 saß im ehemals herzoglichen Schloß zu Treptow an der Rega der preußische General von Knobloch mit den Herrn seines Stabes und dem Oberst Koch, Stadtkommandant von Treptow und Chef des dortigen Infanterieregiments, beisammen. Der dichte Rauch ihrer kurzen holländischen Pfeifen und der kräftige Duft einer Grogbowle erfüllten das dreifenstrige getäfelte Zimmer. Aber Rauchen und Trinken waren an diesem unfreundlichen Herbstabend für die fünf Herren nur eine mechanische Beschäftigung, an der das Bewußtsein keinen Anteil hatte. Alle ihre Gedanken galten der vom General geleiteten Besprechung der militärischen Lage und der auf dem Tisch zwischen ihnen ausgebreiteten Karte des Geländes um die Festung Kolberg und befestigte Hafenstädtchen Treptow. Mittels dieser erläuterte der Generalstabsoffizier Leutnant Friedrich von Steuben die augenblicklichen Stellungen von Freund und Feind.
Es war etwa anderthalb Jahre vor Beendigung des siebenjährigen Ringens Friedrichs des Großen gegen die gewaltigsten Nationen des europäischen Kontinents. Die Sache Preußens stand in jenem Herbst sehr schlecht. Härter als je zuvor wurde König Friedrich von der Übermacht seiner mächtigen Gegnerinnen bedrängt - der „drei Unterröcke“, wie er spottend zu sagen pflegte. Gefährlicher noch als Maria Theresia mit dem deutschen Reichsheer und die Truppen des von der ehrgeizigen Madame de Pompadour beherrschten schwachen Königs Ludwigs XV. von Frankreich war für Preußen die russische Zarin Elisabeth mit ihrem fanatischen Preußenhaß, dem die unerschöpflichen Hilfsquellen des riesigen Rußland zu Gebote standen. Abgesehen von den anderen russischen Streitkräften, die Preußen bedrohten, war im Spätsommer eine starke russische Flotte unter dem Grafen Romanzow vor Kolberg erschienen und hatte ein großes Belagerungskorps von etwa 16.000 Mann gelandet. Man munkelte aber, die russische Flotte hätte im ganzen 25.000 Mann mitgebracht, von denen 9.000 auf den Schiffen zurückgeblieben seien, um je nach Gelegenheit an irgendeinem günstigen Punkte zwecks eines Ablenkungsmanövers zu landen, womit dann die russische Übermacht dort verhängnisvoll geworden wäre.
Um diese zweite Landung zu verhindern, war von den Truppen des Generals von Platen die Brigade des Generals von Knobloch in das kleine, schwach befestigte Hafenstädtchen Treptow abkommandiert worden. Außerdem aber hatte sie noch eine andere schwere Aufgabe: mit seinen wenigen Truppen in Gesamtstärke von 2.000 Mann Infanterie und Kavallerie sollte der General auch die Lebensmittelzufuhr für die Kolberg an der Landseite deckenden Truppen des Generals von Platen und des Prinzen Eugen von Württemberg schützen. Da die nächste Umgebung längst ihr Letztes hergegeben hatte und man das Notwendige weither beschaffen mußte, so war der General von Knobloch gezwungen, seine Abteilung in immer dünneren, längeren Linien auseinanderzuziehen, wobei natürlich Treptow nicht ohne genügenden Schutz bleiben durfte.
Translation - English Near Treptow
On the evening of the 20th of October 1791 the Prussian General von Knobloch was sitting in the palace and former ducal residence at Treptow on the Rega together with his staff officers and Colonel Koch, town governor of Treptow and chief of the local infantry regiment. The three windowed, panelled room was filled with the thick smoke from their short Dutch pipes and the strong aroma of a grog-punch. But smoking and drinking were nothing more than an unconscious mechanical activity for the five men on this inclement Autumn evening. Their attention was riveted by the General's exposition of the military situation, and the map of the terrain around the stronghold of Kolberg and the fortified seaport of Treptow, that was spread out on the table between them. General staff officer Lieutenant Friedrich von Steuben was using it to explain the current positions of friend and foe.
It was about a year and a half before the end of Friedrich the Great's seven year struggle against the most powerful nations of the European continent. The Prussian cause looked precarious that Autumn. King Friedrich was being pressed harder than ever before by his all-powerful female adversaries – the 'three petticoats', as he mockingly liked to say. Even more dangerous for Prussia than Maria Theresia with the imperial German army, and the troops of the weak King Louis XV of France, who was under the control of the ambitious Madame de Pompadour, was the Russian Tzarina Elizabeth with her fanatical Prussian-hatred to which she could commit the inexhaustible resources of the gigantic Russia. Apart from the other Russian forces threatening Prussia, a powerful Russian fleet commanded by Count Romanzov had appeared off Kolberg in late Summer and landed a siege force of 16,000 men. It was rumoured however that the Russian fleet had brought a total of 25,000 men of whom 9,000 had stayed on board the ships to be landed as a feint at some favourable spot should the opportunity arise, whereby the Russian superiority in that area would have become fatal.
General von Knobloch's brigade had been redeployed from General von Platen's forces to the small, weakly fortified seaport of Treptow, to prevent this second landing. But in addition to that they had another difficult task: with his handful(1) of troops of a combined strength of 2,000 infantry and cavalry, the General was required to protect the food supply lines for General von Platen's and Prince Eugen von Württemberg's forces, which were covering the land approach to Kolberg. As the resources of the immediate area had long ago been used up, so that the necessary materials had to be procured over a great distance(2), General von Knobloch was continually forced to stretch his division in narrower and longer lines, whereby of course Treptow could not be left without sufficient protection.

1. The literal translation for the German “mit seinen wenigen Truppen” would be “with his few troops” but my rendering “with his handful of troops” sounds more English to me.
2. “Weither” really means “from a long way away” but again this sounded a bit stilted for my tastes.

In addition to his bachelor and master’s degrees he holds postgraduate diplomas in German and Translation. He was awarded the Jethro Bithell Prize in 2012 for his master’s dissertation Imagining Memories: Accounts of War and Authoritative Authorship, which he completed at King’s College, London. He completed his PhD at the University of London’s Institute of Modern Language Studies. His thesis analyses German and Polish collective memory discourses in connection with Poland’s frontier changes in the wake of World War Two. At the same time he works as a freelance translator (German and Dutch) as well as a Sessional Lecturer at the University of Reading’s Modern Languages and European Studies Department. He has been a Member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists since 2010.

Diploma in Translation from the Chartered Institute of Linguists
My post graduate level Diploma in Translation (FHEQ Level 7) was awarded by the Chartered Institute of Linguists upon successful completion of the relevant exam on the 20th of June 2010. This award specifically qualifies me to translate from German into English. This diploma says as much about a candidate's ability in English as in the source language as it places high demands upon the target text in terms of register, style, grammar and spelling as well as the appropriate use of technical jargon and idiom.

Diploma in German Language (KDS)
This diploma is awarded by the Goethe Institut, London, on behalf of the Ludwig Maximilians Universität München. It certifies the successful candidate's abilities in speaking, reading and writing German to a level approaching that of an educated native speaker, i.e., to the sixth and highest level (C2) of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). NB: to put this in context, most BA honours degrees in modern languages currently offered at British universities only prepare the student to the fifth level, C1, of the CEFRL.

Industry and Commercial Experience
Having begun my working life with stints in the Australian and British Armies (where I qualified and worked as a vehicle mechanic), I have since moved into IT consultancy and project management and have worked in this field for the past 20 years or so. During this period I have worked in England, Germany and Holland and have been involved at all levels of management up to Associate Director. My work has given me a deep insight into, and many years practical experience in the production of, most types of commercial documentation and the full procurement cycle including the drafting of procurement and service contracts, invitations to tender, tender responses and project and technical documentation; all of which I have written, proofread and edited in both German and English.
My business activities, even when I have been based in Britain, have often involved protracted periods during which my main focus has been on the German-speaking regions of Europe whereby German was used for most documentation and spoken transactions.
From a technical point of view I have been most involved in consultancy relating to data networking, fibre and copper cabling and communications room design and fit out. I have worked closely with architects and construction companies and have been personally responsible for the design, procurement and implementation of highly complex, multi-million pound projects in industry sectors such as banking, higher education and law.
As well as giving me specific abilities and knowledge of both commercial and technical documentation and its translation, my industry and commercial experience, even going back to my military days, has provided me with a profound understanding of many of the aspects of what 'makes the world' tick, as it were, which is an invaluable asset when it comes to translating. Even literature with its focus on plot, language and cultural allusions, usually plays out in a commercial world or at least presupposes an understanding of commercial and political constraints, without which a full understanding of the work and therefore an ability to render it faithfully in translation, would be impossible.
Cultural Links to Germany
Having been posted to Germany with the British Army I subsequently married a German and lived in Germany for a total of 10 years, half of which were as a civilian. Throughout that time German was our house language and having raised two sons in Germany I was given privileged aspects to many aspects of German culture, which operate during the formative years of the average German, such as early schooling, literature and television as well as what one might call child culture. This is the kind of cultural exposure unachievable by the purely academic student of German and Germany. It is augmented by an exposure to all aspects of contemporary German culture from shopping to dealing with officialdom to understanding family and international dynamics in what was then still a divided and occupied country. Many aspects of German literature and modern journalism must appear to be obscure or confusing to any translator not having experienced a similar level of exposure to contemporary German culture.
I currently live in England but maintain close links to Germany through frequent visits, both personal and business related; German TV and films; closely following current affairs by way of newspapers and magazines and of course masses of reading covering 18th, 19th and 20th century literature, some of which I access through audio books. In terms of my current academic studies, most of the history books in my library are in German and I routinely translate and quote from them in order to present a balanced view point in my essays.
Other Languages
Although I am only officially qualified to translate from German to English and am primarily offering this as a service, I have in the past translated from English into German when this has been specifically requested (see my sample translations for examples). In addition to German I am able (but not officially qualified) to translate from Dutch into English and German and have a particular interest in related languages such as Low German and the various branches of the Frisian family. Essentially, if something is written in any form of West Germanic, I can understand and therefore translate it.
I have also dabbled in various other languages solely for my own interest but would be unable to offer any services in connection with them. Nevertheless it may round out this presentation of my linguistic credentials if I briefly indicate some of the avenues down which my wandering mind has led me.
I read Polish and am currently working on a biography of Józef Hen, a Polish-Jewish author and film producer of note. We conduct our correspondence alternatively in Polish and English. Many of the texts I read in connection with my PhD were in Polish.
In terms of the level of competence I have been able to achieve thus far, and the likelihood of my being able to reach spoken fluency with sufficient effort at some point in the future, I would say that Polish and Norwegian (Nynorsk) in particular are the primary candidates. I can usually decipher most Scandinavian texts although I claim no more than a 'party trick' ability to converse in them with native speakers.
I have a similar level of ability in Italian although in this case my speaking ability, which I would describe as no more than 'holiday Italian', slightly outstrips my reading competence. I am scheduled to begin a Latin course as part of my classical studies with the Open University, which may well reignite my interest in Italian although I confess to a greater affinity with the Germanic languages than with those stemming from Latin.
My most prized 'linguistic possession' to date is a small smattering of Turkish gained during a semester of night school in Germany sometime around 1992. This is so long ago and my access to the language has been so limited since that time that I have retained no more than a handful of polite greetings and similar banalities. Having said that, Turkish is a beautiful and important language and, given the opportunity, I would certainly like to be able to pick up where I left off all those years ago and try to develop a high level of fluency in this language. Maybe someday.
