Source text - Czech Dělnický průvod se již blížil k náměstí. Nejdříve uviděla Ri změť barev. Rudá barva převládala, ale ze všech stran ji obklopovala modrá, zelená, žlutá. Byly to barvy modelů, standart, emblémů, jež se odrážely na černém pozadí lidských postav. Téměř v každé řadě průvodu byly neseny portréty, velké podobizny vůdců nakreslené tuší na plátně, podobizny tak veliké, že Ri dovedla rozeznat i z výšky, která ji dělila od průvodu, Stalinovu tvář. Byla vždy stejná, proplétala se mezi barvami, přísná, ironicky se usmívající. Ri viděla nejlépe oči, oči přimhouřené v ironickém, trochu káravém, trochu shovívavém a povzbuzujícím úsměvu, a zdálo se jí, že ty oči míří na ni, Ri, ženu zahraničního inženýra v třetím patře cizineckého hotelu. Nemohla se vyhnout jejich pohledu, ztisíceronásobenému počtem. A lidský proud tekl, stále se objevovaly nové kolony, průvod byl nekonečný. Ri byla ohromena, zdrcena, ztichlá a nemohoucí. Bylo jí, jako by se dívala na smršť, na živel, který smete všechno, co mu stojí v cestě, lidí bylo tak mnoho, že nebyli již lidmi, nýbrž neznámou a nepochopitelnou silou, nadpozemskou, nepostižnou. Ri ještě žije, protože se proud nemůže vzdout do takové výše a nemůže ji strhnout, ale Ri si myslí, že by to bylo přece jen možné, a drží se křečovitě okraje psacího stolu u okna. Nyní ví, že nemůže býti ani řeči o jakémkoli boji. Jak si připadá směšnou! Bojovat s vichřicí drtící všechno na své cestě! Je pokořena, tichá. Smíří se, udělá všechno, cokoliv. Půjde do továrny, bude třeba uklizečkou nebo dělnicí, bude tahat prkna na továrním dvoře nebo stát u soustruhu, nyní je všechno skončeno. Bude sloužit, pokorně sloužit tomuto světu, nemůže se ubránit, chce jen žít. Žít jako nejnižší z nejnižších, žít, dýchat a jíst. Není boje, není smíru, zbývá jen služba. Může se vykoupit ze své samoty jen pokorou, nemůže se ani skrýt, ani uzavřít, není takové skrýše ani brlohu, kam by nedopadly ty přihmouřené jestřábí oči z podobizen. Avšak milovat tento svět jako Robert, milovat tento svět nemůže, copak je možno milovat vichřici, copak je možno křičet na bouři, aby se zastavila?
Translation - English The workers’ parade was already nearing the square. The first thing Ri saw was a blur of colour, predominantly red, but with streaks of blue, green and yellow. These were the colours of models, flags and emblems, striking against the black background of human figures. Posters were being carried in almost every row, huge portraits of leaders inked onto canvas, portraits so large that Ri could make out Stalin’s face though she was far from the parade below. Weaving through the crowd of colours, his face was always the same, stern, with a wry smile. She could see the eyes clearest of all, eyes narrowed into an expression that was at once reproachful, and yet somehow benevolent and encouraging, and it seemed to her that those eyes were focusing directly on her, Ri, the wife of a foreign engineer on the third floor of the foreigners’ hotel. She could not avoid their gaze, duplicated as it was by the many thousands of posters. And still the human stream continued to flow, new waves always appearing, the parade apparently endless. Ri was overwhelmed, crushed, silenced and helpless. She felt as if she were staring into a tornado, a natural disaster which was about to sweep away everything that stood before it; there were so many people that they ceased to be individuals, becoming instead an unknown and incomprehensible force, unearthly, uncontrollable. Ri is still alive only because the stream cannot rise to such heights and drag her down, though she fears it is somehow still possible and so grips the edge of the desk by her window. She now knows that there can be no thoughts of battle. How foolish she feels! To struggle against a tornado that destroys everything in its wake! She is humiliated, silent. She must resign herself to doing everything, anything. She will go to a factory, become a cleaner perhaps, or a labourer, she will lug timber in the factory courtyard or work the lathe, everything is at an end. She must serve, humbly serve this world, she cannot fight it, she wants simply to live. Live as the lowliest of the low, live, breathe and eat. There is no battle, there is no reconciliation, only servitude remains. She can escape from her solitude through humility alone, she cannot hide or close herself off, there is no hiding place or den into which the narrowed, hawk-like eyes from those posters cannot peer. But to love this world as Robert does, no, she cannot love this world; is it even possible to love a tornado, is it possible to scream into the storm for it to stop?
Czech to English: Novel - fiction/prose
Source text - Czech Malý čtyřletý hošík pobíhal s klackem v ruce kolem pískoviště a neustále bojoval s imaginárním nepřítelem.
„Ty jsi ale bojovník,“ povzbuzovala ho matka sedící na lavičce hned vedle pískoviště.
„Nedostanou mě,“ vykřikl chlapec a znovu začal mávat prutem.
„Je úžasný,“ otočila se na muže sedícího po jejím boku.
„Wando, tolik štěstí si nezasloužím,“ usmál se na ni a vzal ji za ruku, „a to jsem už hloupě nechtěl o dítěti ani slyšet.“
Wanda Irvingová byla čtyřiačtyřicetiletá štíhlá černovláska s průzračně modrýma očima, což ji činilo neobyčejně zajímavou. Na sobě měla lehounké vzdušné šaty a její tvář se každou chvíli rozjasňovala upřímným smíchem.
„Je celý po tobě,“ plácla po stehnu muže, který jí mačkal ruku, a který mohl být na první pohled jejím otcem. Byl to ovšem manžel a otec dítěte. A byl to také nejbohatší muž jihoafrické republiky a jeden z nejbohatších mužů světa.
„Tati, udělej mi šipku,“ zaprosilo udýchané dítě, „zaútočím na ně s letadlem.“
Muž tedy sáhl pro peněženku a vytáhl z ní navštívenku. „Udělám ti z tohodle lístku malinkou stíhačku. Dokážeš s ní lítat?“
„Jasně,“ vykřikl nadšením hošík, „jsem přece pilot. A pilot umí lítat s každým letadlem.“
„Ale stíhačka není obyčejné letadlo,“ přidala se Wanda, „lítá moc rychle. Každý pilot to s ní nezvládne.“
„Já jsem Adam Irving,“ pronesl hrdě chlapec, a jsem nejlepší pilot na světě!“
„Podívej se na svý zaprasený kalhoty,“ upozornila ho Wanda, „myslíš, že s takovýma hnusnýma kalhotama by pustili pilota do stíhačky?“
Adam pohlédl na své plátěné kalhoty a začal si je rozpačitě čistit. Špína však nešla dolů a zejména na kolenou vytvářela na látce nevzhledné skvrny.
Rodiče jeho snahu pozorovali a táta současně skládal z navštívenky malou šipku.
Adam malými prstíky čistil kalhoty, a když viděl, že jeho snaha je marná, začal natahovat.
„Chlapi nebrečí,“ upozornila ho máma.
„Když oni mě nepustí do stíhačky,“ vyhrkl a jen s nejvyšším úsilím zadržoval pláč.
„Stíhačka se dá pilotovat i ve špinavých kalhotách,“ řekl mu táta, „ale ve špinavých kalhotách do letadla pustí jen toho nejlepšího. Špatný pilot a ještě neupravený nemá šanci.Když chceš-„
„- jsem nejlepší pilot,“ zvolal Adam a rázem si přestal čistit kalhoty, „už můžu do letadla?“
„Ještě není hotové,“ uklidňoval ho otec.
Pečlivě překládal hrany navštívenky, na které bylo napsáno: Jack Irving, Gold International Mining Company, generální ředitel.
„Volal jsi Warrenovi?“ zeptala se Wanda.
„Ne, proč?“
„Proboha. Už jsme o tom mluvili tolikrát. Myslíš někdy na něco jiného, než na ty své doly?“
„Wandi,“ usmál se na ni, „ne.“
„To jediné ti věřím,“ pokývala hlavou, „pak ti tedy po sté připomínám, že příští rok bude našemu synovi pět let, mně čtyřicet pět a tobě sedmdesát pět let. Neslibujeme si ten výlet do Evropy už nějak moc dlouho?“
„Hm,“ zabručel Jack, „nevidíš, že už vyrábím letadlo?“
„Já budu to letadlo řídit,“ vykřikl Adam, „a odvezu vás do Evropy.“
Wanda se na něj zálibně podívala. Malý Adam měl po ní krásné modré oči, ale jinak byl podobný na Jacka. Navíc byl blonďáček s vlasy sluncem téměř vybělenými. Krásné dítě, pomyslela si, a nebýt nezdařeného atentátu na Jacka před pěti lety, dodnes by ona byla pouze jeho asistentkou s nejasnou vyhlídkou na budoucí manželství.
Ten otřes tehdy spoustu věcí urychlil a malý Adam byl toho důkazem.
„Náš tatínek je studnice slibů,“ pokývala hlavou Wanda, „dneska slibuje a zítra už zase nebude nic vědět.“
„Jack dokončil skládání šipky, která jen velmi vzdáleně připomínala letadlo, postavil se a s nesmírně vážným výrazem pronesl: „Máme tu někde pilota, který s tímhle zázrakem dokáže létat?“
„Já,“ vykřikl Adam, „já jsem pilot!“
„Jste neupravený, pane,“ upozornil ho otec.
Adam si rychle urovnal tričko. „Už jsem upravený,“ vyhrkl.
Jack se sklonil a pečlivě si prohlédl imaginární dokument.
„Jste pan Adam Irving?“ optal se.
„Ano,“ zapištěl chlapec.
„Piloti se hlásí celým jménem,“ upozornil ho ještě.
„Jsem pilot Adam Irving a poletím s tou stíhačkou do Evropy!“
Jack se sklonil a obřadně mu předal papírovou šipku.
Hošík ji převzal, chvíli si ji prohlížel a pak ji zvedl nad hlavu a rozběhl se. „Letím!“ zvolal.
„Když už jsme u toho lítání,“ obrátil se Jack k Wandě, „mám něco i pro tebe.“
Zalovil znovu v peněžence a vytáhl malou světle modrou obálku. Usmál se, přivoněl si k ní a pak ji podal Wandě.
Wanda si obálku opatrně vzala, pak si ji ze všech stran prohlédla a nakonec ji otevřela. Vytáhla z ní pomalu dva papírky a rychle je přeletěla očima.
„Jó,“ vykřikla.
Potom se postavila, zatvářila se velice vážně, jen lišácký výraz v očích nedokázala ovládnout. „Jsem Wanda Irvingová a poletím do Evropy,“ zvolala.
Malý Adam se překvapeně zastavil a zavolal na ni: „Já poletím do Evropy!“
„Všichni poletíme do Evropy,“ řekl Jack, „když se maminka tak hezky zahlásila, nemůžeme ji tu nechat. Nebo by jsi chtěl letět bez ní?“
„To ne,“ přikývl Adam, „ale já budu pilot.“
„Domluveno,“ přitakal Jack a víc už nestihl říct, protože se mu Wanda pověsila radostí na krk.
„Budou to nejkrásnější narozeniny nás všech,“ šeptala Jackovi do ucha.
„Jistě Wandi,“ přikývl, „ve firmě jsem všechno zařídil, obejdou se meze mě, vždyť tam mám nejlepší odborníky z celé Afriky. Je to špičkový tým.“
„Jacku, nebuď naivní. Ve firmě může být sebelepší tým, já vím, že firma je z devadesáti procent kolektivní dílo, ale podstatná a zásadní je myšlenka a strategie, a ta vychází z jediné hlavy. Z tvojí hlavy Jacku. Víš?“
Jack ji lehce políbil na tvář. „Alespoň uvidíme,“ zašeptal jí do ucha, „jak si G.I.M.C. povede nějakou chvíli bez mojí geniální hlavy. Ale víš, čeho se bojím?“
„Čeho?“
„Že by si bez ní mohla vést líp než s ní, a to bych jen tak nerozchodil.“
„Jestli tě mohu uklidnit, miláčku,“ usmála se Wanda, „to spíš přistanou na tomhle pískovišti marťani.“
„No, nevím,“ zakroutil hlavou.
„A díky, už teď se strašně těším,“ dodala Wanda, „kam nás to vlastně vezmeš?“
„Co třeba Monako?“ zeptal se.
„Jóóó,“ neovládla se.
„A potom Paříž, Praha, Vídeň a Londýn. To by mohlo stačit, ne?“
„Ježíši,“ vzdychala Wanda, „jsi báječnej, Jacku.“
„Jsi báječnej,“ přidal se Adam.
„Jsme taková báječná rodinka,“ objal je Jack, „akorát nevím, jestli se nebojíte létat?“
Translation - English A small, four year-old boy was running around a sandpit with a stick in his hand, constantly fighting with an imaginary enemy.
„You‘re a real warrior,“ his mother encouraged him as she sat on the bench beside the sandpit.
„They won’t get me,“ the boy screamed and once again started waving the stick around.
„He’s wonderful,“ she said, turning to the man sat beside her.
„Wanda, I don’t deserve so much happiness,“ he smiled at her and took her hand, „and to think, I didn’t even want to hear about a child.“
Wanda Irving was a slim, forty-four year-old woman with black hair and limpid blue eyes that gave her an exceptionally interesting appearance. She was wearing a light, airy dress and her face lit up in an honest laugh every so often.
„He takes after you,“ she said, slapping her husband on the thigh, as he held her hand, though at first sight he could have been mistaken for her father. He was, however, her husband and the child’s father. And he was also the wealthiest man in the South African republic and one of the wealthiest men in the world.
„Dad, make me a dart,“ the breathless child pleaded, „I’ll attack them with a plane.“
The man reached for his wallet and took out a card. „I’ll make you a tiny fighter plane out of this piece of paper. Can you fly it?“
„Of course,“ the excited boy screamed, „I am a pilot after all. And a pilot knows how to fly any plane.“
„But a fighter plane is not just any plane,“ Wanda joined in, „it flies really fast. Not every pilot can cope with it.“
„I’m Adam Irving,“ the boy said proudly, „and I’m the best pilot in the world!“
„But look at those mucky trousers,“ Wanda warned him, „you think that with such ugly trousers they’d let a pilot into a fighter plane?“
Adam looked at his linen trousers and started cleaning them awkwardly. The dirt, however, refused to come off, forming ugly marks on the material around the knees.
The parents watched his attempts while his father continued to fold the piece of paper into a small dart.
Adam tried to clean the trousers with his small fingers but when he saw that his attempts had come to nothing, he was close to tears.
„Men don’t cry,“ his mother pointed out.
„But they won’t let me into a fighter plane,“ he burst out, holding back the tears with great difficulty.
„A fighter plane can be piloted even with dirty trousers,“ his father told him, „but they only let the best pilots into a plane with dirty trousers. A bad pilot and a dirty one have no chance at all. If you want – „
„I’m the best pilot,“ Adam called out and immediately stopped cleaning his trousers, „can I get into the plane now?“
„It’s not quite finished yet,“ his father said to pacify him.
He carefully folded the edges of the card, on which was written, ‚Jack Irving, Gold International Mining Company, general director‘.
„Did you call Warren?“ Wanda asked.
„No, why?“
„For goodness sake. We‘ve talked about it so many times already. Don‘t you ever think about anything other than those mines of yours?“
„Wanda,“ he smiled at her, „no.“
„That’s the only thing that I believe from you,“ she shook her head, „then for the hundredth time I‘m reminding you that our son will be five next year, I’ll be forty-five and you’ll be seventy-five. Haven‘t we been promising ourselves that trip to Europe for a bit too long?“
„Hmm,“ Jack muttered, „can’t you see that I’m already building a plane?“
„I’ll fly the plane,“ Adam shouted, „and I’ll take you to Europe.“
Wanda looked at him with delight. Little Adam had her blue eyes but otherwise he took after Jack. On top of everything, he was blonde with hair almost bleached by the sun. A beautiful child, she thought, though had it not been for a failed attempt on Jack’s life five years before, she would still have been nothing more than his assistant, with uncertain prospects of a future wedding.
That shock had hastened a number of things back then and little Adam was its proof.
„Your daddy is a mine of promises,“ Wanda shook her head, „today he makes promises but tomorrow he won’t remember anything again.“
Jack finished folding the dart, which only vaguely resembled a plane, got up and, wearing a very serious expression, said, „Do we have a pilot here anywhere who knows how to fly this miracle?“
„Me,“ Adam shouted, „I’m a pilot!“
„You are untidy, sir,“ his father pointed out.
Adam promptly straightened his shirt. „I’m tidy now,“ he said quickly.
Jack bent down and carefully studied an imaginary document.
„You are Mr. Adam Irving?“ he asked.
„Yes,“ the boy squealed.
„Pilots report with their full names,“ he pointed out again.
„I’m pilot Adam Irving and I’m flying to Europe with this fighter plane!“
Jack bent down and solemnly passed the paper plane to him.
The boy took it, examined it, and then held it up above his head and started running. „I’m flying!“ he called out.
„Since we are talking about flying already,“ Jack turned to Wanda, „I have something for you as well.“
He reached into his wallet and took out a small, light blue envelope. He smiled, smelled it and then handed it to Wanda.
Wanda took the envelope carefully, looked at it from all sides and eventually opened it. She slowly took out two pieces of paper and quickly looked them over.
„Yeah,“ she screamed.
Then she stood up, adopting a serious expression, though she was unable to conceal the sly glint in her eyes. „I’m Wanda Irving and I’m going to Europe,“ she called out.
Little Adam stopped in surprise and called to her, „I’m flying to Europe!“
„We’re all going to Europe,“ Jack said, „and since mummy reported so nicely we can’t leave her here. Or would you like to go without her?“
„No,“ Adam shook his head, „but I’ll be the pilot.“
„Agreed,“ Jack said, though he was prevented from continuing as Wanda flung her arms around his neck.
„It’ll be the best birthday for all of us,“ she whispered in Jack’s ear.
„Of course Wanda,“ he nodded, „I’ve arranged everything with the company, they’ll manage without me, I have the finest experts in the whole of Africa there. It’s a top team.“
„Jack, don’t be so naive. The company could have the best team in the world, and I know that the company is ninety percent a collective operation, but the important and crucial things are the strategies and ideas, and those come from a single head. From your head, Jack. Did you know that?“
Jack gently kissed her on the cheek. „At least we’ll see,“ he whispered in her ear, „how GIMC does for a while without its ingenious head. But do you know what I’m scared of?“
„What?“
„That it’ll do better without me, I don’t think I’d handle that too well.“
„If it would reassure you, darling,“ Wanda smiled, „I think it’s more likely that Martians will land in this sandpit.“
„Well, I don’t know,“ he shook his head.
„And thanks, I’m already looking forward to it,“ Wanda added, „where are you actually taking us?“
„What about Monaco?“ he asked.
„Yeaaahh,“ she could not resist.
„And then Paris, Prague, Vienna and London. That should be enough, shouldn’t it?“
„Jesus,“ Wanda sighed, „you’re great Jack.“
„You’re great,“ Adam added.
„We are a great family,“ Jack hugged them, „I just don’t know whether or not you‘re scared of flying.“

My translation process involves three stages - an initial translation of Czech to English, then a close editing stage with my native Czech translating partner, before a final edit and proofread in English. I believe that this process ensures the highest standard of language, with both source and target languages edited with native knowledge.
In the interests of quality I only translate Czech-to-English, and not English-to-Czech.
